It was an event in LA in 04 to launch the DVDs. I was there because I was the editor of IGN's DVD section at the time. All the usual suspects were there. Bill Hunt in front of me, Peter Bracke to the left, etc. I asked him about the quality of the original films and he called them the dirtiest negatives he'd ever had the pleasure of working with, and if he had it his way, he'd still be working on them (mind you that was August 2004). He made no secret of his dissatisfaction.

In retrospect, it seems to me that this release was to just provide some "reference material" for the fans for comparison pruposes between the theatrical originals and 2004 SE's. I don't believe that Lucas really intended for videophiles to accept these transfers as true representations of the way movies originally appeared in the theater. Or, at least, I *hope* he didn't! |
