Hello AER
I was thinking the same exact thing, except for the phase plug, the tweeter, and the cheap design. They almost fooled me.

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

That site also has some "PVC" towers. Don't know if they're pvc coated or solid. Either way, that's also a new one on me.

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

Yea I'm not sure about the PVC coating, don't really think that makes much sense.

parable:
Some doof who was at the bank got side swiped by to crazy crackheads selling speakers out of the back of there van.

"Hey bud, I'm kind of short on cash and I've these extra speakers in my van that need a home", says the crackhead.

"Oh really", replied the doofus who is going to lose his money to crackheads", sounds like a pretty not stupid thing to do, how much are we talking?"

The other crackhead chimes in, "Well these Teflon Coated, Awesomo' brand name speakers sell for about $2,300 in stores and you can use them to cook with to on this Divinci receiver, we will do the package price of $300 for both because I need crack money, I mean our boss is going to kill us.

Doofus interjects, "what about crack?''

"What, I didn't say anything about crack, just buy the stupid, I mean awesome speakers," the crackhead resonded.

"OK, well I guess since they are Teflon coated and all, sure I'll get them," Said Doofus.

Sucker, I mean,....thanx buddy", the crackhead hesitantly replied.

Moral of the story is don't be a doofus or smoke crack, respectively

No crackheads or doofusses were harmed during this parable

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

Hey Seth... I found a company today that we can add to the list, but I gotta find it again though. I lost the company name...

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

Oh yeah... I found the company
It's called "Scam Tech"

Listen to their quote:
"At Scam Tech, we take great pride in providing our customers the best listening experience possible. That's why we make only one speaker, and make it great. Our Stdoodio Searies speakers represent the pinnicle of hand crafted worksmanship, years of development and research, and our undying passion to bring quality for value.

Our design:
-Crossover

We start with high quality Nichicon capacitors, and Burr Brown solid state electronics in our crossover assembelys to ensure that your sound is rich and natural, just as the master copy intended.

-Bindindg Posts

We use high quality machined brass billets (they only look like 9mm gun casings) to ensure high quality connections to our highly and lovingly designed speakers.

-Tuned Bass Apeture (A Scam Tech Exclusive! )

The unique design of our Bass Apeture is spirled (unlike a golf ball) to ensure high flow and accurite tuning of our high output bass driver.

-Driver Configuration

As you can plainly see, our speaker's elegance is second to none. Our electrostatic main driver is transparent and completely natural, leaving you spell bound when any number of vocals arrive as well as soft, subtle pianos.
Our revolutionary woofer is sized to ensure a small footprint, but make an unheard of 3" of travel!
Our top mounted tweeter, with glass filled rods, helps eliminate resonance, and brings out the highest reproduction avalible to dog whistles.

-Quality Seal of Approval

Our speakers run at an unheard of 130.407 Watts RMS to ensure plenty of power and loudness for even the most extreme situations. (warning, peak RMS can be -27 W).

-The beauty
If you are tired of your wife telling you that your speakers don't match your decor, then you are in luck. We have reproduced the exact longitude and latitude location of our Holland Engineering Plant's playground field in the back of thier building. Just one look at the meadowy fields, and your wife will fall in love. Don't belive us? Let the speakers "speak for themselves".

I hope you know I spent 2 hours to make this gag

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

Alex and I thought that it would be fun to make our own "white van speakers". He used a tissue box, an audio circuit out of a toy, Mountain Dew bottle and cap, and some aluminum foil.

I used a Brita box, lots of duck tape, Sony dream system multipurpose driver, Pioneer 4'' woofer, empty paper towel roll, extra cardboard, and motherboard signal speaker to make mine. Eventually I will take a picture and submit it to the appropriate area.

I have an idea for a white van speaker company name:

(breath for a moment)

Definitely Technology

Ta-da, now if I can find a way to market my BS company.

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

The name "theatre research" came up in another thread-- so I did a little poking around. Turns out that they're also sold under the name 'Canyon Audio'-- and audioholics have reviewed them. A bad review, but nevertheless, a review.

Eventually, some white van speaker company will produce something that's not so fugly. But who am I to argue with aesthetic fads? I still like B&W...

Funny I know what thread you are talking about I think. The poor guy who put down $9000 on a pair, funny, but very sad at the same time. I don't have that much in my entire system, and my system rocks IMO.

So without further ado, I will add Canyon Audio to the list.

cites for what, for the original post, or findings of other white van speaker scams?

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

Loosely speaking a "white van" speaker is one that fits the following profile:

actual value << offering price << msrp

or one that has been sold out of a white van.

The problem is that neither the internet generally, nor ebay, in particular are white vans all the time. At some point, a pair of unbiased ears needs to determine "actual value", and this cannot be done by simply shopping for drivers. The crossover is the real key.

Re: White Van Speaker Scams

When refering to white van speaker scams I do mean all companies that sell speakers on ebay for $200 that supposedly retail for thousands of dollars. All the speaker that I have listed have sold speakers under these pretences or sold them out of a van or suv using tactics such as a story about how their boss will be upset or they come off as threatening. Of course they cannot do this on ebay, but you get the idea.

My most recent addition to the list Streem, was selling a speaker that looked exactly the same as another speaker I had seen made by another company for around $50. I though, cannot remember the name of the company that made the speaker.

I think he already knows, he is either a scammer himself, or has been scammed, has realized it, and now he is trying to get his money back. So either way, it's a scam. I like the guys who are honest about it. I see them sometimes trying to sell them just to get a little back, and some will tell you they aren't worth the suggested retail and are really only worth what they are selling them for.
