Supernatural Season 1

Has anyone seen this show that can give a proper review? I've been thinking about picking this series up this coming Tuesday but haven't done any research on whether it's decent enough to pick up.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

It's pretty much The X-Files with younger and prettier people. Seriously though, I caught most of the episodes over the summer and it's pretty good and is easily the best horror/spooky TV show in years.

I plan on picking it up but I'm going to cheap out and wait a few months for Best Buy or Target to have it in another sale on WB TV sets.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Can't really do a decent review... but... I love the show... is my favorite of last year's new shows. The brothers face all kinds of ghost and creatures... some even being famous urban legends like Bloody Mary and The Hook Man. I never missed an episode... and I already have my copy pre-ordered (and shipped).

Re: Supernatural Season 1

is there any kind of ongoing story? I reallly do not like series that just have a monster/case of the week. It's hard for me to maintain interest.

it's kinda both. The whole series STARTS with an ongoing story from their childhood (in the first five minutes of the pilot, you learn all you need to know about why they have grown up the way they did). But yet there are also a lot of standalone episodes that also have references to the bigger arc.

Technically, if you like the pilot episode (which sets everything into motion, why the Winchesters care about the supernatural, why Sam ends up dropping his law school aspiration and ends up joining Dean permanantly, the interaction between the two brothers, the comic timing of Dean, the type of structure the show uses, etc...), you should like the rest.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

personally, I would recommend Supernatural to any Joss fan, this is the closest thing to new Angel and Buffy that you're going to get on television right now (Veronica Mars comes close tho but I'm just starting to watch that).

Re: Supernatural Season 1

This thread and another currently running have convinced me to buy this.

Plus, my interest is piqued because they've been filming episodes about a block from where I live for a week now. Saw one cool scene (no pun intended) where a stunt woman gets set on fire.

Unfortunately, yes, there is an ongoing story (I'm your opposite...I love the monster of the week episodes and find it hard to maintain interest in an ongoing dramatic arc). But I still LOVE the show!

My set is also pre-ordered.

I think you just made Jennifer Love Hewitt cry.

LOL... Oh I love Ghost Whisperers too!!! It is my 2nd favorite show of last year... but I have to admit...Supernatural pulls ahead by just a hair. Mainly because it is more horror related where Ghost Whisperers is more of a dramatic show. But both shows are awesome!

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Yeah, I'm just kidding. GW was a good way to decompress after all the violence of the other shows I watched. It was a lot kinder. But, that doesn't mean I don't like the violence, too.

Got the set today, and I like the packaging, but I'm a little disappointed that no pictures of Meg are included. The artwork under the discs is great, though.

Has anyone who watched the set noticed any problems? I had trouble playing the last episode.

The sticker says "Supernatural at the museum of television & radio's paley television festival. Q&A with cast and creative team."

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Yeah, that's it. I haven't watched it yet, but what Jared and Jensen have to say is pretty funny from reading the transcripts, and Kripke has some interesting comments about different things including why he went with a rock soundtrack. Again, haven't watched it, but I think it's worth the couple bucks to get it at Best Buy.

Also, last night, I watched the pilot for the first time since it originally aired. Still fun. Everything that made the show good was right there from the start.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

I just got my set today... Already watched the pilot episode!

So far the only drawback I see with this set is the overlapping discs. I would have much prefered double thinpaks. But hey... at least it's another great series added to my collection!

Goshdarnitall!!! I really, really, really hate those overlapping disc holders. They may look nice but they were a really, really, really stupid, idiotic design idea.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

I would definately recommend this show to anyone who's a fan of horror and comedy, it's also one of my favorites of last year, the chemistry between the two brothers is great!

BTW, Ghost Whisperer is probably my second fave of last year also.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

I love Supernatural.

I plan to check Ghost Whisperer out, how much like Medium is it? I like Medium a lot but if the shows are too similar, I'd just stick with Allison Du Bois
post #22 of 36

Re: Supernatural Season 1

I also like Medium alot... and watch/collect that show. Even though there are simularities... I also feel there is enough different about the 2 shows to keep my interest.

Where Medium is a psychic that helps to solve crimes... she can see and communicate with the dead... but she also gets visions and such.

In the case of Ghost Whisperer Melinda can only see/communicate with the dead... there is no solving of crimes... it is more about the deceased getting closure so he/she can move on. So Melinda has to help the ghosts communicate with their loved ones or help the deceased find out what happened to them... whatever it is that is stopping them from moving on. Though now there is a more on-going arc added to the show... as there is what seems to be an evil spirit that is trying to stop Melinda from helping the deceased.

As I said... I like both shows... and plan on getting all the DVD releases for them.

As for Supernatural... to get this back on topic (sorry to the OP!) Last night I finished the first disc... here are my thoughts so far...

First of all... the packaging. The cover-art is awesome but why oh why did they have to use a digipak with overlapping discs!?! I would have much preferred the double thinpak cases! I really hate overlapping discs!

Thankfully they gave us a play all function on the set. And another thing... this is the first time I ever seen this... and I think it is awesome! Every episode has a recap of previous episodes to remind you what is going on in the main storyline. Well... this set allows you to choose whether or not you want the recaps to play! Very cool feature!

Ok... I am going only by the first disc here... but looks like an awesome set for an awesome show! Other then the overlapping discs this set gets a near perfect score from me! I just hope (I am sure) that the rest of the set is done just as well as the first disc!

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Watching the first three episodes, my reaction was, "I don't think I'll buy this on HD-DVD if/when it comes out." It looks great as it is.

It'd be interesting to hear reactions from people who bought this show blind.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Glad to hear you're enjoying the show Pete. It was my favorite show last year and I can't wait to dig back into it. I'll probably pick it up tonight.

very small spoiler for season 2 that resident Buffy fans may like. Amber Benson is going to be appearing in season two as a possible recurring character.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Thanks for the info re: the Best Buy bonus disc!

I love this show but will unfortunately have to wait a while for it as unexpected things have come up. I can't wait to re-live the opening of "Skins". When Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
"In a Gadda da Vida"
played, my jaw just about dropped open and I was officially in love with the show.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

Jay, please post that in the Supernatural Season 2 thread in TV and HDTV. There isn't much to talk about right now, so we need info like that.

Re: Supernatural Season 1

With the season 2 dvd set just announced, I am ready to buy season 1 and had a question. I just looked at a scan of the back cover and it says this is "matted" widescreen. The TVonDVD site says it is anamorphic widescreen. Are these the same thing? I thought matted means it is not anamorphic.

Also, I assume season 2 will be the same way (whatever way season 1 is done)?

Re: Supernatural Season 1

S1 is anamorphic. The show was broadcast in widescreen (at least the high def feed was) so the DVD is presented in its correct aspect ratio.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that either Target, Best Buy or Circuit City is having a sale on Supernatural this week so check out some ads and you'll save some money.
