The music of Star Trek..ahhh yes, another of my favorite topics. i was watching one of my Mission: Impossible episodes this week, and the music was so Trek. Seeing as its the same studio, made at the same time, and has a ton of the same folks in front, and behind the camera as Trek, i have no doubt it was the same composer. My favorite Trek music would have to be The Doomsday Machine. That music was so good, you can see the episode in your mind. Of course it was reused many more times the next year and a half. I also really like the music from The Paradise Syndrome, great stuff.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I'll add that The Conscience of the King has a very strong score, romantic and lyrical. Star Trek TOS has a really strong range of music, from whimsical to dramatic.

That's great. I noticed the violet-ish colors in the sky more tonight than I have in the past (I watched By Any Other Name during dinner time). During the opening beam-in, I wanted very much to see the 'complete' shot that you've posted here recently.

Speaking of Spock's Brain, I like the angles we see on the Bridge. I don't believe these are seen in any other episode of TOS. I'm speaking specifically of the front shot (as if one were standing behind Chekov) where we see Sigma Draconis and the other planets that they are (potentially) going to choose to search for Spock's brain.

I can't recall if you've seen the thread over in Music (The Music of Star Trek). If not, there are some interesting and informative posts in that thread.

I own the music from The Doomsday Machine on CD (as well as four other CDs of the music of TOS). All of them are an excellent investment if you don't already have them.

The other night, I was listening to another of my favorite TOS segments--the first music we hear on the planet in Friday's Child. With TOS music in general (I am not speaking specifically of this passage), there is something ethereal and other-worldly about it. It has the ability somehow to transport [] me to another place, and does much to convince me that I really am on another planet, with the landing party. It's so well-constructed, and so very memorable.

And how I love the music immediately succeeding Kirk's line, "Gentlemen, we're debating in a vacuum. Let's go get some answers" (from This Side of Paradise). It can also be heard on Deneva in Operation: Annihilate! (during their first time down to the planet) and again in Charlie X, among other episodes. The recording I have of it accentuates the piano performing staccato rather than strings performing pizzicato. It may be that both are used in the original; I'll have to have a more closer listen to it soon.

Most definitely lyrical and romantic. The bits that are used from that episode in Shore Leave (right after the mention of Don Juan) are also quite appropriate for that scene. Another of my favorite segments (and I think, unique--in the sense that I don't believe these were used in any other episodes) are the respective scores for The Empath and The Paradise Syndrome. The music for parts of the latter episode reminds me in some ways of Bali High.

Rick,

Re: Journey to Babel. I watched it tonight (finished about five minutes ago). I saw the white tape you spoke of in the episode. As you said, it occurs right around the time McCoy is asking Spock about his pet Selat. I looked under the table where the nourishments are being served, and there were many strips there! I may have seen these before, but probably thought that they were part of the flooring pattern.

BTW, I also noticed that I had the hand-switching reversed. I've amended that post above. It actually goes left-right-left, and not the other way around.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I have read the music of Star Trek thread, but i think the last time was quite a while ago. I will look it up, get up to speed. I own all the original scores to TOS, and of course the movies, that are on CD. I just couldnt get into the reperformance CDs, i think i just have one. When you know the music so perfect, a change of rhythm or pitch just ruins it for me.

OK, here is a gaff for you: The Immunity Syndrome, Spock and McCoy are talking outside of the shuttle bay. They are waiting for the bay to pressurize, and McCoy is telling Spock, your not going to let me share in this. Spock says he could wish him luck, yadda, yadda. Anyway, McCoy is wearing his short sleave lab shirt, but when he hits the button to open the doors, the close up of a hand hitting the switch is a long sleeve McCoy.

Rick,

I understand. I am a purist at heart, especially when it comes to pitch (yet less so when it comes to instrumentation). The rescorings of the original music (the two Sarabande CDs of Fred Steiner) are IMO very well done, and in great part are faithful to the originals, although strictly speaking, not identical. I like the fact that the original composer and conductor is at the helm. The aspects I have observed that are in any way changed are instrumentation (in a couple of cases) and tempos. I am not aware of any changes in pitch. If I were, these would bother me greatly, as I have absolute pitch, and find change in pitch more than ten cents either way to be a flagrant violation to my ears.

Wow, that's an awesome catch. I wonder--is it McCoy on a different day or segment of shooting, or is it a 'standby arm'?

Here are a couple of other neat ones, although these are script-related and not as visually interesting as the example you mentioned above, and which I will have to check out now that you've mentioned it. Capt. Christopher, in Tomorrow Is Yesterday, reiterates (incorrectly) what Spock says with regard to Christopher's 'relevant contribution'--and Spock agrees with Christopher's erroneous reiteration--in essence agreeing with the error. (Spock even says "poor choice of words on my part"--LOL.)

Spock: "I have run a check on all historical tapes. They show no record of any relevant contribution by John Christopher."

(later)

Christopher: "Why? You said I made no relative contribution."
Spock: "Poor choice of words on my part."

Star Trek Sickbay - TOS: Episody - 22 - Tomorrow is Yesterday - Transcript

And in Devil in the Dark, we have the infamous "thousands of" line of Spock's, when in fact, Vanderberg actually said (prior to Spock's line) "millions of them."

Spock: "Mr. Vanderberg, what is this?"
Chief Vanderberg: "It's a silicon nodule. Millions of them are down there."

(later)

Spock: "You recall that Vanderberg commented there were thousands of these at a lower level--"

Star Trek Sickbay - TOS: Episody - 27 - The Devil in the Dark - Transcript

Just some food for thought.

Incidentally, I have many visual gaffs (like the example of Gav above) that I will post on occasion. Is it okay to post things like this in this thread? If not, another could be started.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

A Star Trek goofs thread, could be interesting!

Scott, thanks for the heads up on the Music of Trek thread. I am going to post over there now. I appreciate the posting above of the CD's out there. More on that in the other thread.

I was rewatching the HD version of Errand of Mercy last night and I did see that the re-framed image does indeed reveal part of the set edge. Right after the Klingons attack the Enterprise in the begining of the episode. The shot reveals the wood floor edge right at Spock's station.

Later, after the Organians cause all weapons to radiate a temperature of 350 degrees, we see Kor head over to his desk to get a dagger, you can catch a glimpse of his disruptor still in his holster. Must have been shot earlier before Kirk and Spock disarmed him!

Thread? There are books written on the subject. There is a series of them which includes "The Nitpicker's Guide To Classic Star Trek" along with all the other Trek series as well as X-Files and others by Phil Farrand. Now he'll have to update one to cover anything changed by the remastering and find any new goofs.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Steve-

You're right! I have his Nitpicker books for TOS called, For Classic Trekkers and For TNG Trekkers vol 1 and 2. He's quite sarcastic. I had forgotten about them.

Last I saw, he's web based now?

Nelson Au,

You're welcome. And wow--more wonderful tidbits to view, which I will probably try to do this weekend. I will look forward to these, for sure (at least those that I have a chance of viewing, like the distruptor of Kor's). Errand of Mercy also has the distinction of being only one of two episodes in which McCoy does not appear (not including the first two pilots, of course). Bonus points if you can name the other episode.

I must say, though, that seeing a wood floor edge at Spock's station is a bit of a downer. I thought they were really in a space ship all this time....

Oh, you mean like in the Paradise Syndrome, when the flame that comes out of the temple was red, and not blue, like Miramanie said it would be (blue).

Another episode that didnt have McCoy...i gotta think about this.

Just so I don't cause any confusion, he wasn't in either of the two pilots (The Cage or Where No Man Has Gone Before), Errand of Mercy, and at least one other. Have fun.

I had to think about it, and i didnt even cheat!

I was thinking of the animated series episode The Slaver Weapon. That episode only had Spock, Sulu, and Uhura. No Enterprise either! Great episode, worthy of being canon as far as i am concerned!

RickER,

Well, I was speaking only of TOS, but for the record, I've considered TAS canon for years. I know I'm in the minority. I do draw the canonical line at the novels, although I find many of them an enjoyable read.

Incidentally, there is also an episode of TOS in which we never see the interior of the Enterprise at any time in the entire episode.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I almost thought that either Requiem for Methuselah or The Empath also never showed the inside of the Enterprise. But then I remembered the last scenes on the ship.

Speaking of music, the last shot of the Enterprise leaving Sarpeidon and the exploding sun really fits the mood, particularly the new remastered version makes it more melancholy.

Nelson Au and RickER,

Yep, you both got it again. Thanks for the Sarpeidon music, too. I will have a listen to that from work tomorrow (dial-up from home makes loading a bit slow). BTW Rick, I think it's the only time it occurs in the original series.

BTW, is there a Trek trivia thread on this Board? Just curious. I don't want to hijack the original intent of this thread.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

You could always start a Trek trivia thread, Scott.

My local CW affiliate keeps changing the time they show Star Trek Remastered. Lately it's been at 1:00am Monday mornings. Today, they decided to show it at 3:00pm this afternoon. Luckily I set my computer to record it!

Here are some new caps from the episode. The barrier looks similar to the work done earlier for Where No Man Has Gone before, of course. The coolest shot, is the last shot as the Enterprise turns around and heads home!

One thing I never mentally caught before was the make-up on Warren Stevens. In the beginning, he was really pale and his hair really dark, same for the other male Kelvans. Later, on the Enterprise, you can really see his skin tone getting more normal for a human, as he's becoming more human. Nice little subtle effect. Of course Barbara Bouchet looked good all the way through.

Looking at the barrier, brings back those old arguments of why they didn't just fly over it. I think more and more at the scale of the thing and then we are probably looking at our galaxy edge, so from that perspective, it looks thin.

When I saw this episode a couple of nights ago, I did notice the thick make-up on Stevens. But what I didn't notice were the changes in it over the course of the episode. That's quite a nice catch, and as you say, a subtle effect.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Any thoughts on whether we'll see the first season on Blu-Ray this year? For the record, I would not be in favor of seeing double-sided discs like the HD-DVD release, with high-def on one side and standard on the other. For those who have the HD-DVD release, does it contain the original versions of the show (unremastered)? I have the original DVD sets and they look excellent - best I have ever seen the show look.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I don't have the remastered HD set, but I do know that the original versions of the episodes are not on them.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Yes, the HD-DVD set only has the remastered episodes, in both HD and SD.

My guess on a BD release of the Remastered TOS is end of this year for S1. Only CBS knows if it will be a BD only release. I bet it won't include the SD versions. Has any BD release done a hybrid? My guess is no.
