God, I hope so. Spock trying to wrestle the phaser out of McCoy's hand and then giving up while Nancy Suckface is putting the suckers to Captain Kirk is not the height of drama.

Below is part of the post I did on the other Star Trek thread. (I would have thought the mods would have merge the threads by now!)

Your post in the other thread is what led me to make my observations.

Dave is right though... which is it: Shot for shot or new angles? I'm rooting for the new angles come Saturday night.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Well, we'll all know for sure next week. The clips that I saw were very short and limited. But the shots that I did see matched angles that we are all familiar with. The one shot of the Enterprise at an angle in Balance Of Terror after the nucluer device goes off I bet will be altered a bit so it won't look like the shot was tilted as it does now. That's probably what the Billy Joel looking guy meant.

Not so fast guys, looks like a bit of a stumbling block:

"While they are being transferred into HD, [most] of the stations are not transmitting in HD because of limitations of the stations," said Dave Rossi, a visual effects producer on the project. "We can offer them the opportunity to do it, but our understanding is the major affiliates don't have the storage capacity to do anything but live broadcast. So the choice has been made that we're going to air them in their standard definition, 4:3."

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Yup, doesn't surprise me. They will release these on HD or BD down the line and that will be the selling point. "For the first time ever in HD!!"

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

If they're going to do this, I'd actually like to see more than simply re-doing existing shots. There are a lot of moments in the original series that are hampered by the budget, like "invisible ships" or the use of a Klingon cruiser for a Romulan ship in "The Enterprise Incident."

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Okay, I found the trailer that I saw at the Star Trek conference in Seattle. Unfortunately, it's a youtube link and the quality is poor and jerky. But it's what I saw and it looks promising! The first video on top is the one I saw.

Nelson, thanks for the link, it was great to see. My mouth is watering now for Saturday when the "The Ship Hit's the Fan" love it.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

David, why do you keep repeating the same questions as though it was the first time? Such as "The Billy Joel looking guy..." Paradox, much?

Repetitive, much?

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Huh, looks like they were serious when they said they'd be honoring the original effects with this CGI upgrade. Not much to complain about so far judging from those video clips.

I just want say that in 43 minutes it will be my birthday and maybe I'm mellowing in my old age but I am truly sorry if any of my posts became antagonistic or hostile to any other members. I love HTF and truly appreciate having a bunch of guys online that I can talk with, and yes, occasionally bicker with.
Thanks for being here for these discussions.

I am totally not being sarcastic, btw...

Peace out.

Let me impart these birthday words of wisdom from an iconic 90's show...

'I really wish he wouldn't get so cranky around his birthday...'

'What's Raphael's big Hangup with Birthdays, anyway?'

'Maybe the Dudes afraid of becoming a Middle Aged Mutant Ninja Turtle?'

I'm coming up on 30 myself in two years.... wonder when my midlife crisis begins, if it didn't come up earlier already .

Happy Birthday, Dave. I'm glad you added that you weren't being sarcastic, cause for a minute I thought you had turned into Alan Shore.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I still cannot believe that the largest (or one of the largest) markets in the country, New York city (& surrounding areas) is only airing the show at 3:05am.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Wow! I need Season One, then I'm done with the DVD versions. But I'm actually looking forward to this now. I posted on the other thread that was done but wasn't so sure. Now I think it looks very professionally done.

Still, the question remains: Will they release the original versions in HD too?

At any rate, I'll most likely buy this "upgraded" set when the price for everything drops. Very exciting!

I hope a station I get runs this. I only have an outdoor antenna. *secretly wonders how long it'll take before this shows up on bittorrent*

If the shows air on Sunday, someone will have it posted on bittorrent on Monday.

I don't think we're supposed to mention that here, but that was my plan for Miri, which my station is not showing

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I checked all around me for dudes in dark suits and glasses as I typed the word "bittorrent".

Anyway, monday! Rock and roll!!!

Miri is my favorite episode. I believe it's the first one I saw way back in the early 70s. Wonderful stuff!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Woah! Todd! 3am?!?!?!? Damn!
I was in NYC up until last year, in Berkeley now. I believe we have sat. nite at 11pm which is pretty decent. My gf will FINALLY give Trek a shot with me. We Watched "City on the Edge..." which she admitted was ok.
Will be interesting to see if the new tweaks actually affect her "getting into it".

Thanks for the Bday wishes, guys!

city on the edge was one =). anytime you have jim kirk working the ladies is a chic episode. anytime you see a bunch of scantily clad women... those are guy episodes.

Well, no HD in my area.

So much for showing off the spiffy new amazing PQ of the tweaked shows...

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Does anyone have a link to listings for the show in the NYC area? Thanks!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

just goto tvguide.com. i know it's bloated... but it can still give you free listings in HD/non-HD. you can filter out the non-HD stuff and have it display ONLY HDTV listings.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Even though I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I am able to receive the New York NBC and CBS HD stations via DirecTV. But even though WNBC in New York is an HD station, airing the program at 3:35 a.m., it will not be in HD. They regularly show C.S.I. reruns on the weekends, but even those aren't HD. The only HD they show is primetime HD shows and live events such as award shows, sports, etc. Anything they have to store is SD only.
