Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

so... um. how many times has TOS been remastered?
1. VHS
2. SD-DVD
3. more ep per disc SD-DVD box sets
4. Syndication2006.
5. Syndication2006, take 2 with remodeling enterprise.

and in the future:
6. HD-DVD collector's box set of all 3 seasons in glorious HD with black pillars =).

Blu-ray you mean.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Don't forget Laserdiscs and Columbia House 2 ep. VHS...
But in all fairness this is only the second "remaster" and first one in HD... Even though they are not being broadcast in HD, the new masters are in HD which will eventually be released. DVD and probably both HD formats since it is Paramount unless there has been a clear victor...

Question is, will the eventual HD releases ONLY be the CGI tweaked version or will they have both? AND, apparently they are creating the new FX in Widescreen, (then cropping for the current syndicated versions) so who know, there could be a WS HD Trek option. But of course all the live action footage would have to be tilt and scanned from the original 4x3...

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

*Loved* the new NCC-1701 approach to the space station during the opening credits. That was a nice, dynamic, use of the new CGI.

It was also nice to actually see the Klingon battle cruiser orbiting the station later.

The new CGI "model" gets a here!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Good stuff, the new motions and flight path of the Enterprise onto and away from K-7 was nice.

There is quite a bit of plating on the lower secondary hull that I personally thought was a bit much. The K-7 station was quite nicely detailed.

Without doing a side by side comparison, I thought I noticed that some of the set backgrounds on K-7 looked enhanced. One example was the corridor outside the bar or the storage compartments. The walls are the same, but it looked like they added more walls. Very subtle.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Sorry but I have to differ here. I thought K7 looked too much like a plastic model, even with better detail, but that's IMO. The one in DS9 I thought was better. Otherwise, at least they showed the impulse engines on when the ship was not going a warp speed at the end.
The show story itself is still good despite it's comedic leanings. Nichelle Nichols had much more dialog than she usually does and held her own with the rest of the cast. However, with the DS9 story now part of the episode, I keep thinking that everytime a tribble fell on Kirk's head from the storage compartment, it was Dax or Sisko tossing them back to find the tribble bomb.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Agreed about K-7 Anthony, but at least it looked like a cheap "physical" model and not just videogame level CGI which up until this episode, alot of the ship shots did! New Enterprise... thumbs up!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Didnt like the Enterprise out the window. It looked worse than an AMT model kit. It looked like cardboard cutout, even though i knew it wasnt.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Have to second that on the window view Enterprise, such a disappointment. Sure it moved, but it looked so crude!! The space shot of the Enterprise, top notch good job, but that window view one, yes it did look worse than the original AMT model version.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Looking ahead, next week is Mirror, Mirror. It will be interesting to see if they alter the Mirror Enterprise exterior. I doubt it since it wasn't originally, they just used a shot of the earlier version of the Enterprise model when it still had solid wood domes for the engine nacelles with spikes extending from them.

Journey to Babel is coming up too, maybe we'll see an Orion ship this time around. Corbomite Maneuver in a few weeks too. The new Fesarius will be interesting.

One episode that will air in May 2007 is Tomorrow is Yesterday. I was wondering how they might deal with the stock footage used of 1960's Air Force base and fighter jets. Would be cool to see Captain Christopher's plane fly up towards the Enterprise. I figure they've got the ability to replace those shots with CGI jets and a new Airbase. Same thing with Assignment: Earth and the Saturn V rocket launch.

ooooh, mirro mirror!!!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

I doubt very much that they'll replace stock footage.

Also if not everyone heard. Microsoft said they will offer the Remastered Trek as part of their new Xbox Live Download service. And supposedly it will be the hi def version

Oooh those Microsoft guys are crafty!

Good to hear the SFX is improving episode to episode. 'The Ultimate Computer' should provide a real chance for them to flex their creative muscle.

Well, sure enough. They went the extra mile and made the alterations for the ISS Enterprise model. Pretty cool!

Except in one shot from the top of the saucer it says USS Enterprise and not ISS Enterprise, also what was up with the warp 9 shot of the ship inserted in the middle of the episode. Not only was it an old shot, but the ship should still have been in orbit!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

That was a clever way of bridging the gap between two cuts made for syndication. They were so crafty with this random insert, it didn't take me out of the story at all.

(sarcasm)

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Hey, Dave Mack, if you see this post today, I don't see Star Trek listed on the on-line TV Guides, Titan TV or TV Guide's site for tonight's broadcast of Mirror, Mirror. Are you aware if our local SF Bay area CW station is not showing it, or moved it? I'm counting on over-the-air, I think you watch via cable? Thanks!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Hiya Nelson!

Well, they freaking moved it to saturday nite at 11pm! I guess that's a better time slot although I must have missed last nite's mirror mirror as next saturday has Space Seed...

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Hey Dave!

Thanks, yeah, I missed it too. Better time slot, but I must have missed any promos that they are changing the time. Looks like they'll re-run Mirror, Mirror in several months.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

"Mirror, Mirror"; I really liked the agony booth enhancement.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Missed Mirror, Mirror due to a timeslot change that wasn't advertised. I read on the Trekmovie site that there was a slight glitch and an error got through where a transitional shot was inserted right after Chekov tried to assasinate Kirk. A shot of the Enterprise at warp was inserted. Okuda and team has released a statement that they messed up and the error is corrected for the next re-run of the episode. What was a surprise was that the editing of the shows are done by an outside company.

These guys have been on top of things and it's great to hear these statements as it speaks to their commitment to putting out a good product and respecting the fans, as they are themselves.

February has got some great episodes in store for us, Journey to Babel and I'm sure, many a favorite, The Doomsday Machine.

I'm glad the CBS Paramount team had the time to get their "space legs" with this remastering process and re-working of the new CGI Enterprise model. I am looking forward to seeing what they do for Doomsday Machine. I just wish we could see it in HD!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Space Seed looked great! The new CGI Enterprise continues to improve, even the engine nacelles looked improved. The new Botany Bay looked great too and the new shots of the Enterprise and Botany Bay together where terrific. The Botany Bay looked very natural as it was discarded.

A few weeks back I noted how dark the image seemed to be, I thought it looked off, too dark. This week was no different. But since the broadcast timeslot changed this week, I was able to watch it live. So I took out the recent DVD sets from last year and synched Space Seed with the broadcast to compare.

What I saw surprised me! The new DVD’s that were so praised for how great they looked now looked faded and colors washed out compared to the re-mastered broadcast! I have just gotten used to seeing Star Trek look this way for the last 40 years of TV broadcasts, videotapes, laserdiscs and now DVD’s. The new re-mastered Trek’s of course have solid looking colors and deep saturation. The skin tones looked washed out on the DVD’s compared to the more faithful renditions of the re-mastered shows we’ve seen. The new re-mastered Star Trek should look mighty terrific on HD-DVD!

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Hiya Nelson! I agree. Last nite for the first time they REALLY nailed it IMHO. There were a few good shots in previous remastered eps. (along with several really BAD ones) but this was a quantum leap forward. It REALLY looked 3 dimensional, with mass and majestic. Great work. I totally thought it was the old 3rd season 60's model, just cleaned up and slicker and that's a GOOD thing. can't WAIT for Doomsday, Enterprise Incident. Anyone know what ep. is next week?

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Hey Dave-

Thanks for posting the effects reel. Amazing how Youtube has made this so easy.

I checked and next week will be The Menagerie. Pt 1. It will be interesting to see how and if they try to duplicate that show as the Enterprise flys towards the camera and it pitches down so we can zoom into the bridge. That would be cool if they do indeed slavishly try to recreate that one.

Corbomite Maneuver is after The Menagerie Pt 2, and then a repeat of Balance of Terror. I hope they redid the effects for that one! Can't wait to see the Fresarius.

Haven't seen the episode yet, but the vfx reel David posted on YouTube looked FANTASTIC!!! I can't wait to see this tonight.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

Pretty nice. I noticed a lot of clipping in the audio, though — the level was all right, but there was a buzz in some segments which wasn't there in others with almost identical audio conditions. That could have been my broadcaster, or even my setup, though.

Yes thanks Dave! My first glimpse of these new shots. They look pretty good. The Space Seed sequences looked excellent.

Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.

If anyone's interested, The Menagerie Pt. 1 airs this weekend, tonight for me.

Things to look for that will likely be new effects shots; new Starbase 11 matte paintings with new people walking around the background, new view screen shots, and new planets including Talos IV. The main event for me will be the new Kirk Enterprise and a new shot of the pitch/zoom-in shot into the bridge of Pike's Enterprise.

Of the new shots likely planned, is the viewing screen shot where Pike's ship comes up on Talos IV. I always liked the original as it came up to the planet so fast. Hope the new effect is similar.
