Re: Star Trek TOS Special Edition Starts Sept 16th.
Okay...yesterday I watched an all day Trek marathon on G4, which was composed of the old, unadultered eps. Today, I caught the last half hour of an episode with this painfully fake creature (can't recall the name, I believe its listed in some former post).
Anyhow, this is my reaction: Based upon what I've seen, the "redone" eps (if you can really call them that), have a nicer overall picture. For lack of a better term, the old episodes appear "warm," whereas the new ones are more of a neutral, contemporary look...in terms of quality. Aside from that, everything was the same. The lame monsters still look lame, and the caves and backgrounds are still cardboard and styrafoam.
With all that in mind, I would say there is not a dramatic difference between the original, and CGIed version. The only major change is, as some have pointed out, the shots of the Enterprise...which make up a VERY small fraction of the eps anyway.
After reading this thread, and some individual's complaints and critiques, I was particulalrly observant when looking at both the new and old Enterprises. Nonetheless, I feel the new Enterprise looks better than the old one. My opinion on this is that although in the original we are looking at something that is real (ie: a model), it looks a bit too real (ie: it looks like a cheap model). Whats more, the original motion of the enterprise seemed very static and ridgid in comparison to the new shots. All in all, I think the remastering is a good thing.
That in mind, its an opinion. I believe any "nonfanatic" would appreciate the remastering, and hold it in higher regard when compared with the originals, especially the Enterprise shots.
However, for the fanatics, there is no pleasing...so why not go back to your DVDs, or the G4 Saturday marathons of the originals? I mean, no one is pulling your leg to watch these new ones. AND, at 11am on sunday, I don't think the network is pulling anyone else's leg to watch it either.
Its like someone else has said before: if your after original, the DVDs are the best route. They're touched up, and they are in the original 480 format...but no dramatic image doctoring. For someone that is so concerned with originality, they would be the end of the line. What Paramount does from here should not be, how you say, paramount for someone of that perspective.
