Just so everyone is on the same page we do not use avatars on the forum. The pictures that you see under a member's name is their profile picture. This is a smaller resized version of the profile picture that is both in a member's profile and in the profile picture gallery.
To use a profile picture go to the User CP and upload a picture of choice. It will be resized to forum defaults. If you want to see them under your username, and you don't already, go to the User CP => Edit Options and enable Show Profile pictures. This will show them under everyone's name. This is enabled by default so if you don't want to see if disable this option.
