Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

By "HD disc", I mean 1080 (not "HD DVD").

Is there one disc from either of the warring formats with.
1. Excellent video.
2. Excellent sound.
3. Excellent interaction (menu, etc.).
4. Excellent features.
????

If not, if you would like to, guess (or state your hope for) the first "Killer App".

My hope is for the Superman Box (not the watered down first one).
My guess is the LotR Trilogy (in the same configuration as the upcoming SD DVD re-release).
Or, maybe for you it's the "KILLER APe"!!! ;-)

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

It will probably be King Kong or the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Hopefully your question will be answered before Christmas 2006!

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

Personally, I'm hoping the first such title is Batman Begins. I already consider my Toshiba HD-A1 a worthwhile investment, but I'm anticipating this title the most currently.

In a nutshell: not even close.

I dunno maybe, what was the "killer DVD" in your opinion?

(Blade sealed the deal for me).

The Matrix was the first million selling DVD. That was pretty spectacular in its day...

Ugh!
I didn't think we were there yet, at the same time that's not the answer I was looking for! :-(

I was super impressed with my first DVD, Mars Attacks!
It still qualifies today for the four items I'm looking for HD disc to conquer.
Also a big SD disc title for me was Altered States. Anamorphic & 5.1 for TEN BUCKS!!!
That "sealed the deal for me"! ;-)

A LOT of people are with you on that one, Paul!
If its one of WB's better transfers with killer sound it will be a great success.
What it will need to be the "Killer App" is HD extras.
Good luck, and hopefully that's what the wait has been all about!!!

Superman Returns might just look pretty dang good too Imagine that incredible plane rescue in High Def.

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

well, since Batman hasn't been announced yet, I'm hoping the first Killer disc will be The Searchers. Its the first title since the format has launched that has me in a state of nervous anticipation (but then I've been denying myself the standard version). I know over on AVS almost no one seems to interested in this one, but I'm hoping that the disc will be such a beauty that those techno-fetishests will be spurred to pick it up for the eyecandy aspect if nothing else. I've been enjoying the popcorn stuff quite a bit, but I'm very hungry for an A level, timeless classic at this point.

Batman, with its IME and the strength of the film itself will probably be the first universally purchased killer app. I'm getting pretty tired of waiting for it though. It would be different if it wasn't promoted as being one of the inital launch titles...

Kong will be big, Superman Returns, with its HD cinematography is going to huge also- regardless of how it BO turned out- I expect it will drive a lot of player sales come Christmas time.

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

I dunno,

I think it's best to see what studios can do with 50 gigs of space and VC1 before declaring a killer disc. With that much space, and a decent codec, might be able to get an unprecedented picture out of it.

Not going all "Blue Ray is the bestest!" here, just theorizing what is possible as HD-DVD's shown that VC1 is quite a superior codec.

Oh, yeah! Day and date with the SD DVD please, WB!

The problem with some of those guys is that they think every movie on HD should look like a high def broadcast of a football game.

Does that exist anywhere but in the rhetoric of Sony and its faithful? From what I have heard, 50 gigs isn't gonna have any effect on picture quality if it ever actually comes to fruition and HD DVD already has 30gigs and uses VC1. So I don't have to wait on empty promises.

I think we could see the "killer disc" in Harry Potter, specs look pretty good.

Dolby TrueHD, looks like all the extras from the two disc SD DVD, plus the "In-Movie Experience"...

1. "KA" Video check.
2. "KA" Sound check.
3. "KA" Menu/Interaction check.
4. "KA" Special Features (in HD) ???

Still, a good bet! ;-)

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

Hey, it's great to finally see something official from WB about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire!

It seems every Thursday I get my hopes up that we'll hear cool news from WB, and I'm typically disappointed. But today I've already seen info about GoF and The Sopranos on HD DVD.

I hope we'll be seeing more of these kinds of announcements as the third quarter progresses and we near the fourth.

Holy Molly!!!
First KA may be;
TFatF:TD (Uni)
or
MI III (Para) HD DVD
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...igh _Gear/165
I would have never guessed those titles or studios, as I would have thought the first KA would have been from WB.
Oh well.
BRING IT!!!

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

That's the problem....

Dazzling high definition formats with lackluster titles to
show upon them.

No, nothing yet.

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

Superman Returns was shot digitally so thatg shuld be a very good disc, in theory

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

I'll "hazard" a guess:
Superman Returns was indeed shot digitally.
However, that alone, does not guaranty a stellar transfer.
I saw some funky stuff in the IMAX presentation.
Hence (I'm guessing), the "why", followed by the "uhhhhh..."

Agreed, that and Superman Returns!

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

Bluetights network is reporting that Play.com is taking pre-orders for the Superman Returns SD-DVD. Release date is Dec 4. Play.com is a UK website so the dates might be different for other regions. Surely, SR will be released same day for HD-DVD. That will be one of the Killer discs!

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

Tim

lets hold our hopes high for that one...

things that may seem "Surely" for us consumers might not always seem that way for the production companies...

We shall see...

(Personally, still waiting on the Matrix in HD :-/)

Oh and btw, for video, Chronicles of Riddick was pretty awesome for me on HD DVD..

From reading the title of the thread, I thought it was about the John Woo film.

That would make a "Killer" HD app!!! ;-)

103 people checking out the HD software forum!!!
Yahoo!!!
First time I've seen triple digits.
Congrats HTF.
Go, HD disc, Go!!!

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

If that Preston Sturges set were being released in HD, that would be about as close to a killer app as possible.

One is on the way...from The Digital Bits:

Quote:
We've finally gotten additional confirmation on the expected street date for Warner's Superman Returns DVD. Our sources are sticking with the original 11/28 date we posted last month. So watch for both DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions to be released on that date.

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

I thought Paramount blew a golden opportunity when they didn't do a day and date release of APOCALYPSE NOW on HD DVD and SD DVD. If they had, I think a few more HD DVD players would be sitting in living rooms and HTs right now. I cannot fathom the decision making process that is presently occurring in studio boardrooms in regards to film releases on both HD formats.

Re: Do We Have The Killer HD Disc, Yet?

Edwin,
Do you 'see' a BIG benefit to HD discs when MI3, comes out in SD, BD, & HD DVD D&D?
Thanks.
