New Thread Preview

Looks good.

Does it stay onscreen indefinitely until you move your cursor? I noticed up near the top you can have a situation where the top line or two is covered up by my Yahoo toolbar.

Re: New Thread Preview

Actually, I was wondering if there was any way to disable it?

Brett:

One of the reasons that I replaced the one that comes with the software is that is does stay up until you move your mouse away and it works with IE, Opera, Netscape and Firefox.

Don:

I will have to see what I can come up with.

I was wondering the same thing?

Re: New Thread Preview

What do you not like about it?

Re: New Thread Preview

I returned it to the standard version which does not have an option to disable it.

Re: New Thread Preview

Count me in as one who liked the new thread preview function, Parker.

Seems like the function was basically the same, but the new one gave you more and it was "cleaner". I don't see where the old one is any less "intrusive" or less bothersome.

Re: New Thread Preview

I like the new one better. It's easier to read and it doesn't disappear.

Re: New Thread Preview

Dangit! I liked that thing. It finally gave you enough text to figure out what the thread was, instead of "OK, so here's my prob…". And it looked much nicer.

Re: New Thread Preview

I liked the new one better, too.

The main thing I liked about it is that the preview didn't appear until you moved your cursor directly on top of the text. The way it is now the preview appears no matter where your cursor is. A little distracting but really no big deal.

Re: New Thread Preview

I liked that new feature too, where's it gone chief? Saves me opening a few 'wrong' threads. hmmm a 'newest post' preview feature might be useful too, is there such a thing?

Re: New Thread Preview

I liked the new one as well!

Re: New Thread Preview

Glad to hear all of you liked it. If I had known sooner I would have left it in place.

Re: New Thread Preview

Most people that like new features don't talk it up
as much as those that complain they don't like it.

In most cases, the silent majority is usually those who approve.

Count me in as a person that loves the new preview feature.

Re: New Thread Preview

Just wanted to say that I like the improved preview function. I like the fact that it stays on while you mouse over the thread title. What happened to the avatars, though? They seem to come and go: sometimes on.....sometimes off. Now, they appear to be off.

Re: New Thread Preview

Avatars? We don't have avatars enabled on the forum. Are you talking about the smilies or member profile pictures?

Re: New Thread Preview

I guess I used the word Avatar incorrectly. I meant the member profile pictures. They seem to come and go. Right now all of them have disappeared on my end of things.

I didn't realize they were not showing up. I got them fixed now.

I kind of think it covers a helluva lot of real estate when you're not looking for previews.

I, for one, don't use the previews that much, especially since it shows only the first post. And then since it doesn't go away, it will continue to block real estate til you move your mouse. And since I tend to use my thumb wheel to scroll, I wind up accidentally previewing everything and that covers up all the thread titles....

Just my 2 cents..

I do the same, and find that if I just keep my mouse to the left of the titles, the previews don't show up.

Only thing I'd change about the previews is to try to strip out some of the formatting text (vbcode) to try and make them more readable, but that's a pretty minor complaint. Otherwise, it looks a whole lot better than the default.

Re: New Thread Preview

Yeah, I asked the guy that wrote it if he could come up with code to strip out the vbcode and html but he didn't respond. The default didn't strip out the code either.

Jay:

I will work on allowing you to turn it off as an option.

Re: New Thread Preview

Any progress on an option to disable preview?

Re: New Thread Preview

Parker: I'm still loving the new Preview Feature...but have a question.

When you roll your cursor over a thread link, the preview box appears consistently BELOW the link (so that the top edge of the box is just below the link location).

So, if you have an index page of thread links in front of you and you roll-over a link at the top of the screen, there is no problem seeing the preview box. However, if you roll-over a link at the bottom of the page, the majority of the box falls off the bottom of the screen and you need to scroll the index page up so that you can see the preview box.

Is there any way to re-write that code so that the preview box is "smart" and that a thread at the bottom of your screen would move its preview box ABOVE the link?

I hope I've described that in a way that you can understand. Thanks!

Re: New Thread Preview

Mike, for me (using Opera 9) the "thread preview" box shows exactly the behaviour you say you want. I'm guessing it's browser-dependent, then.

Verrrrry interesting. Just loaded up IE and tried it out and got Christopher's experience. Must be a Mozilla-only situation. That seems odd. I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.7. And it happens at both work and home.

Re: New Thread Preview

Firefox's behavior with a lot of things that work great in IE, Netscape and Opera is eratic to say the least.

Something I just noticed about this is that the drop-down "jump menus" work correctly in Firefox. That is, they seem "smart" by knowing to appear "above" if they are sitting near the bottom of your screen. Wonder why the preview function wouldn't work the same way?
