Warner Home Video has announced a brand new two-disc special edition of The Green Mile which stars Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, and David Morse. The disc will be available to own from the 14th November, and should retail at around $20.97. The film itself will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with both English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Extras will include an audio commentary by director Frank Darabont, additional scenes, a Walking the Mile: Making of The Green Mile documentary, a six-part documentary gallery (Stephen King: Storyteller, The Art of Adaptation, Acting on the Mile, Designing the Mile, The Magic of the Mile, The Tail of Mr Jingles), some Tom Hanks makeup tests, a Michael Clarke Duncan screet test, and The Teaser Trailer: A Case Study.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

For Warner, that's a surprising (and pleasing) SRP. Their 2 disc SE re-releases usually cost $25. I hope the running time on the back cover is a typo though, as the film is longer than 169 min.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

The coverart is disappointing. I was hoping for the more iconic outline shot of Coffey and Edgecomb shadows stretching down the cell block.

Overall, the extras are pretty enticing. Hope the King extra has some meat to it.

And yes the run time better be a misprint as the original is 188mins!

No thanx, I will stick to my R2 single disc!

Dag, the 14th is going to be an expensive day. King Kong Extended, NCIS Season 2, Forbidden Planet, now this.....

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

I love the cover art. Looks like one of Drew Struzan's.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

That's definitely Struzan's work...floating heads and all. He's great...

Floating heads...I really miss good cover art...

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

I'm not too fond of the cover art but I'll probably double-dip on this one. Another snapper gone. Yay!!

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

Holy shit, never thought I'd see Doug Hutchison finally get his due on the exterior of a major DVD cover like this. Frigging cool.

That said, couldn't they have maybe enlisted Stephen King himself on the audio commentary? It's not like he's any stranger to them, he and Darabont are extremely close, and he had more creative courtesy-input on Frank's two flicks than virtually any other major big-studio feature since Maximum Overdrive.

Awesome, can't wait.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

I've been waiting for this for a few years, but after I read about the specs yesterday, I figured I'd skip on this. However, with the low SRP and cool cover, I'm sold.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

There has been some debate as to whether the film will be 188 minutes (as in the original release), or will it be 169 minutes (as depicted in the artwork displayed). Can anyone confirm the actual length?

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

The Digital Bits posted a couple of days ago that the 169 minute running time on the back of the package was a typo confirmed by Warner Home Video. They have gone back and fixed the typo. The film is the original 188-minute cut.

Now, ahem....my HD DVD announcement, please.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

The blurb lists extra scenes. If the running time is the same, then I guess these scenes are more like a collection of deleted scenes.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

what do you guys think?! do you think WB will release a shorter version all of the sudden!!! AUUURRGGHHH! of course it's a typo! i laughed my ass off when that guy over thedigitalbits.com posted about it like he's the smartest guy ever. WOW.gimme a break.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

Count me out, I love this movie, but the same cut, I don't see any reason to get this one. I thought maybe it was going to be an Ext Ed or something, then maybe.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

Darabont did an excellent commentary for Shawshank so that is enough to get me to check this version out.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

Michaeldvd.com.au has a review of the Australian release here. It should be identical to the R1 set.

As suspected, the film is spread over two discs. Also, according to the review, the new documentary runs 103 min. Nice!

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

Oh dear. While I applaud Warner for taking this approach to maintain the best possible quality, it's a deal-breaker for me. I'll wait for the HD DVD announcement in order to not have to deal with the disc change in the middle of the film.

DVD is looking more and more like yesterday's technology with issues like this.

Not just yet, but DVDs will eventually be yesterday's technology ...as will HD-DVD & Bluray.

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

god i hate it when i read negative comments about why the movies is spread over 523 discs blah blah...what a bunch of lazy *****

i can't believe ppl in africa go from place to place to carry water while some ppl in here bitch and moan about why the movie is spread over discs....

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

With all due respect, this thread isn't about the plight of people in Africa. It's about the SE release of The Green Mile, which I commented on - appropriately, I think, in the specific context. If you'd like to talk about Africa, I'll join you in another thread created for that purpose.

No, but donnie d is rightfully pointing out that there should be some perspective exercised here...

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

Count me in the group that is baffled by the concern for a movie being spread over two discs for a 3+ hour movie. Heaven forbid, you have to get off the couch for 15 seconds to change the disc. If it's that big of a deal, then buy a multiple-disc player. What did you do during the LD era when a movie often had to be flipped 4-6 times for a premium transfer of a 2 hour movie.

They don't have to. They can just stick with the first release which does have the film on one disc.

I don't think most people's complaint is about having to get up, my guess is it's more about the flow of the movie being broken. Also don't forget that many people here never had an LD player.

I have to admit there have been cases where a disc split has been a bit of a head scratcher, e.g. Buena Vista's Gangs of New York which was split on R1 and still looked like crap due to edge enhancement, whereas the R2 has not been split and looks decidedly better.

Same for Warner's Wyatt Earp actually, R1 is split, R2 isn't. Don't know about the image quality.

The Green Mile seems to be split on all regions though. I still have the old release so I'll definitely do a comparison between the 2 discs to see if the image is better.

This isn't the laserdisc era, and no longer does a movie need to be flipped even once, let alone 4-6 times, for a premium transfer of a 2, even 3 hour movie. As I already have a DVD of The Green Mile that occupies a single disc, I'll pass on this new "special edition."

Re: The Green Mile SE: November 14th

My comment seems to have been blown out of proportion.

I own the current edition and consider the transfer very adequate; in addition the movie is on one disc. If the first edition of The Green Mile had been spread over two discs like the new SE, I wouldn't object to the new edition doing the same if it was necessary to do this to maintain image quality. I have no problem with Lawrence of Arabia being spread over two discs because it couldn't be adequately done otherwise.

Since the previous edition seems fine to me quality-wise, I just don't like the idea of upgrading to the new edition for extras and at the same time downgrading the user-friendliness of the movie experience. I'll wait for HD to remedy this and give me both the extras and the movie in one piece, and then I'll double-dip. YMMV.

(I still think the comment about social problems in Africa was totally unwarranted in this thread.)

To each his own.

Since I absolutely loved the book, and the near perfect translation to the screen this is truly a no-brainer for me.

As far as the movie being spread over 2 disc, I had no problems with the Extended Editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, or Titanic for that matter.
