Unlike Universal, Warner Brothers actually seems to love movies as much as we do (and we love them for it!). This set is going to be awesome!

I haven't seen this on Amazon as of yet. Hope this isn't a pipe dream. I waited so long for Pulse, and at least Amazon had that as being a release since last year.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

BTW,

I watched my old IMAGE DVD of This Island Earth a few months back on my projector and was *astonished* at how incredibly detailed, natural, and film-like it looked. There was some MPEG noise in large-field areas like the sky, but overall the DVD looked more like "a real movie" than most of the new discs I've seen!

The film isn't due until November. Today is August 1st. That's a little early for Amazon to be taking pre-orders. It would be one thing if the title were released with an earlier release date and then delayed, but that's not the case here. Remember that patience is a virtue, and that good things come to those who wait.

But has anyone ever watched Star Wars while listening to Dark Side of the Moon?

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Speaking of patience and long waits, anyone old enough to remember back in the day for the Criterion Laserdisc release of Robocop? They had announced it and it kept getting delayed and delayed. It was all due to getting releases for a lot of the supplemental materials. In the end, as you know, that release that was ported over to the DVD was both the DVD and LD supplements were the same and very skimpy.

So the wait for this Forbidden Planet disc has been long time coming, but it looks like a really great disc.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Anybody remember when Men in Black was going to be the first "day and date" VHS/LD and DVD release? (Which would supposedly bring a huge boost to the fledgling format.) Then it kept getting pushed back until it was finally cancelled? (Only to be released years later when DVD was already the new standard, LD was dead and VHS dying.)

Came across this at DVDFile forums.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Well, it's still original poster art. Nicer, IMO (although the other one has charm, too).

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

That's original poster art with "Special Edition" on it? That's weird....?

Yikes!

Looks like that cover is for the regular special edition release, and the cover art posted in this thread (above) is for the Ultimate edition...

I've gotta say, that the Ultimate edition has awesome cover art, and the regular special edition has something... um... less spectacular...

Is it for real?

It looks like the answer is an unfortunate "yes".

Is it too late to beg WHV not to use that cover?

the graphics on the UE rock! If it looks like no HD DVD is immenent after all, I'll definitley forego the regualr two discer and pick up the UE instead. Not a big fan of tins though- It'll just get tossed in the closet with that useless Cylon head... Robby'll go on the shelf though

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Yes, both are original poster art (not including "Special Edition", of course).

Well in the film Robby does hold Doc Ostrow in one scene. I'm trying to remember but I think you can spot wires holding the Doc up over Robby's arms, and later in the scene if you look carefully Robby is holding up a dummy. I wonder if those wires will show up even more in the restored version?

Btw love that cover too, all covers look great, can't wait for this release!

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Well, the picture of Robby holding the man at least represents a real shot from the film. ("I'll put him in the tractor, sir.") I'm more interesting in knowing who dyed the uniforms from the C57-D to those funky pastel colors.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Robby holding a scantily clad babe is an iconic piece of promotional artwork and very much in tune with the posters of the period. Nothing in posters ever actually happened in the movies back then.

Remember the poster for Glenn or Glenda?

To say nothing of being typical of the pulp magazines that so much SF derived from. Bad Guy/Robot/Monster/Alien carrying scantily clad babe was practically a requirement for every sf, mystery or adventure pulp from around 1920 through the early 60s.

Notice that every version of "Robby and the Girl" is a variation of the same original. The poses are identical, only flipped to face the other way in some cases. The colors change, the picture may appear to be line art, paint or pastel, but everything else is exactly the same - obviously taken from a single original. (The "Robby with Guy" picture, by contrast, is a completely different pose and seems to have been taken directly from the film itself or an on-set still.)

Say, in the listed extras over in the UK they don't mention anything about a commentary track......whaaa?

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Man, I love the UE art and especially the fact that it comes with the cardboard case, as older 2-disc WB SEs, and not a simple keepcase. But the price is a bit high, especially since those are really the only reasons I'm thinking of picking it up. The reblica robot is not for me, but the prints are nice. I was hoping for pricing in tune with King Kong or The Searchers UEs.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

I apologize if this has been mentioned before, but I seem to remember Robby The Robot appearing in an episode of Lost In Space. Can anyone corroborate or am I dreaming?

Nope, you're not dreaming. I've not seen the ep myself, but I caught an Irwin Allen documentary a while ago and this was mentioned.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

'War of the Robots', from season 1.

Bob Kinoshita designed both robots. Robby also showed up on a Twilight Zone episode, and on The Addams Family (!)

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

If I remember well you can see Robby for same seconds in Gremlins too.
