Very true. I love all of Cameron's movies so I'm very excited to him get back to features but expecting it to "change movies forever" or for it to be "to be one of the best movies of the decade" is nearly an impossiblity in my mind.

Does anyone know if this banner from comic-con is legit or whether it represents official artwork from the film's promotional materials? Are we looking at an image from the first teaser poster here?

That's legit in that it's really a Comic-Con banner.  It's going to be shown on...Thursday next week I think.   Whether or not that's teaser artwork for any potential poster is anyone's guess, but it's legit at any rate.

It is Thursday of next week.  It'll be interesting to see if the rest of the world gets a look that weekend as well.

I'm sure some have heard about the 25 minutes they previewed at comic-con. And that on August 21 Imax theaters across the country will be showing a free 15-minute preview of the film.

I have to say I'm disappointed. Your movie is 5 months away guys, how about showing one of those fancy film commercials they play before the feature at the cinema, I think they're called trailers, so that the other 99.5% of your audience gets a look, aye?

^ It's also playing at 3-D theaters.

I probably will wait to see the movie as a whole but I think this is a brilliant marketing move. 'Free' will always catch people's interest.

Is it really going to be free or just attached to another movie?
The continuing rumor is that it will be free (Fox will "rent the theaters out for that time period"). Not attached to anything. I'm also not sure if I am going to go. Clearly, I am excited about the film, but this might be a nice time to take advantage of the cone of silence and see the film the old-fashioned way.

So this is all they released?  No screen caps for people, no one minute trailer of the 25 minutes shown so the press can release it to it's readers?  I know 25 minutes is a lot to show, but it was only to a room of people.
I agree.  I don't want to see 25 minutes.  I don't need that.  I also think "Cone of Silence" may be smart.  I'll go into it without any preconceived ideas, and appreciate it for what it is.

It sounds like true!

Apparently you're not allowed to record screened footage at the Comic-Cons. It also happened with the Iron Man 2 panel (it's on YouTube) where the footage has been removed. Too bad.

This is being reported as the first official teaser poster.

It's a little more "cartoony" than I was expecting.

Not terribly inspiring.  But it is just a teaser poster.

I got my two reservations today.  We are doing the 6pm Aug 21 showing.   I am not going to get my hopes up because I just don't know what to expect.
I'm glad I had decided to not see the preview because the closest theater playing it is about 40 or 50 miles from me.

Sweet, it opens on my birfday too!

Looks fantastic, but I still get a feeling of deja vu, didn't George Lucas do this sort of thing with the Star Wars prequels? Real people in a CG universe with weird looking CG creatures, so no jawdropping "I've never ever seen anything like this before" from me but still can't wait to see it.

That really is an amazing trailer.  Not sure about seeing a 20 minute preview.  Seems like it would spoil too much of the film.

Can someone tell me what the source material is for this film?  Is it a book or something or is it straight from Cameron's head?

Can't wait for this one.  Cameron is a visionary.

Peace,

DM

Dave, this is original from Cameron, though I'm sure he was inspired by quite a bit of speculative fiction.

And I can't watch this at work, but will first thing at home.  I made no effort to watch the 15 minutes tomorrow, so this teaser will have to do.  I'm OK with that.

From what I understand this is an original story, though word around the campfire is that many at Fox who have seen what Cameron has been up to for the last couple of years have dubbed the movie "Dances With Wolves in Space".  This also came from some who saw the 25 minute footage at Comic Con.  The movie will no doubt be just as (if not more) spectacular an event as we've come to expect from the "King of the World" and Fox is hoping for not only big box office for their rumored $300 million flick, but also a solid performance with Oscar voters.

Regardless of how this one turns out, "Avatar" has emerged as one of the most anticipated movies of the decade.

I have been trying to keep a low profile on this project. I am a fan of james cameron. I didn't want to get into the hype too early. I must say that I am impressed.. probably because it has been a real crappy summer and we need a real movie, not crap like tf 2 and gi joe.

I look forward to the preview tomorrow night and also in december.

I heard its an epic 3 hour movie.. I beleive that the imax preview will only show the first half of the movie or so. a least that is what I heard about the 25 minute preview from san diego.

Steve, the teaser wasn't in 3-D.  I think it's safe to say that jaws will be dropping and dropping hard in December.  I can't wait to see this either;)

Yeah I keep forgetting Avatar is supposed to be the pinnacle of 3-D moviemaking to date. I always try to avoid seeing movies in 3-D and opt for the flat version. I get dizzy too easily and see 3-D as little more than a gimmick like shakycam, but I might make an exception for Avatar.

When I read the summary that was online awhile back, I had the impression that Harry Harrison's Deathworld novels were a big inspiration also.
