Very long read, very good though.

I wonder what Cameron was like when he did drink caffeine.

For 300 million, Cameron could have given us a great adaptation of Haldeman's "The Forever War"

now that I would definitely like to see - they could make 2 great movies from the first and second book, the third book was somewhat lacking compared to the first 2

I read this book a few months ago and now I'm just finding out about this.  I am hugely excited!

Oh, and I've got my midnight showing tickets for Avatar.  I cannot wait!

So...

Has anyone seen the new 3:15 trailer that came out Friday?
Yup, saw the new trailer, my expectations have been raised, and I've been trying to keep them down and not have too much in that department going into the film in December.  But it does look like Cameron has raised the cinematic stakes once again.  I suspect it'll be a nice birthday present to myself (its release date).  Heh.

Just FYI regarding the trailer, FOX has been removing the bootlegs and the HD version will be released later this week.
The bootleg trailer got me more interested than the teaser did, I can't wait to see it in HD. I'm getting pretty hyped for this, but Cameron has to work hard to disappoint for me. I even love Titanic.

I saw the trailer on the big screen before Amelia and I got so choked up my wife was concerned.  I was blown away by what I saw and can't wait for it to come out.  Looks absolutely incredible.

Thanks for that bit of news. Ridley Scott doing "The Forever War" is even better news than if Cameron, himself, would have taken on the job. I must have been one of the few that actually liked "Kingdom of Heaven", so I must have a soft spot for Scott's work.

I'm one of the few with you.  I think the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is excellent and corrects all the problems the theatrical version had.  Having read Forever War recently I'm very happy to hear it's going to be made by Scott.

Looking forward to seeing the new Avatar trailer.

I noticed the action figures are out already. Might be a good idea to avoid the toy aisle if you want to remain spoiler free.
I found the bootlegged trailer last night on some random movie website.  The trailer does look good, however I am a little concernced with the overall theme of the movie.  It is straight out of dances with wolves.  However, being that this is Cameron, I don't want to over simplify it.  I'm just going to assume that it's not going to be simple cookie cutter, and that even though the theme is well known, the characters and story telling will be enough to make it great, and I'm sure it will be anything but straight forward.

There are growing complaints this may be ripping off Poul Anderson's "Call me Joe"

http://io9.com/5390226/did-james-cameron-rip-off-poul-andersons-novella

I'm a fan of Poul Anderson's work, and always feel sad that one of his best works (The High Crusade) was turned into such a terrible movie... one that went for comedy over the action of it.  Call Me Joe is a good book, but it's been a very long time since I read it.  If Avatar is like Call Me Joe, I'm onboard, hell, if the idea started there, it improves the way the film may play out greatly.

Eh, I really don't think any of Cameron's work came anywhere close to plagiarism. He's a sci-fi fan and his work just exemplifies traditional sci-fi ideas.

If I had a nickel for every time someone claimed Star Wars ripped off Dune and Lensman back in the day.

I read a short story many years ago with a similar premise, (humans transplanted into alien bodies to explore a hostile environment) but can't recall the name of it. They had run out of "volunteers" on account that nobody came back to report on what they had seen. The frustrated head of the program volunteers himself, (and his dog!) to go next.

Much, much better trailer.  I wasn't all that excited after seeing the teaser but this one will have me in the theater on the 18th.  Thanks for the link, Patrick.

Decent, but I prefer the first (more wordless) trailer.  The visuals look incredible, no doubt.  The story is tried and true.  The direction looks solid.

But this is a rah-rah action trailer; the first held a bit more mystery.  That is probably why I prefer it.  That, and the John Murphy 28 Weeks Later teaser music :)

I didn't love the speech at the end.  Man, is that chestnut old.  But they needed a "story" trailer, and this is pretty much the story.  Soup to nuts.  Hopefully, there will be a few surprises.

It doesn't matter.  I was seeing this opening night from the moment it was announced.

I'm glad I've seen more imagery, but the teaser was a better trailer for my money.  Though Stephen Lang ("Why Ike...whatever do you mean?!?") looks badass.

Edit: Watched them both.  Hadn't seen the teaser since mid-August, and won't see the trailer except in theaters after today.  Minimize expectations and maximize the experience.

I absolutely prefer the teaser.  The love element and mystery blend with the action better.  Just wanted to be sure.

I am very excited for the film.  We're under 60 days at this point...54 or 56 days from right now (on the East Coast)?  Should be something.

i prefer the teaser also - it's magic for me, pure and simple.

this one is way too pedantic to fill me with the same kind of wonder.

ah, well - as chuck says, i was always going to be there first day.
I can understand what you guys are saying with regard to the mystery of the teaser.  My problem with it was that I felt like I was watching a video game; it didn't feel real.  I don't know if they've worked on the CGI since then (I assume so) but for this trailer I felt like I was watching actual creatures in a real environment instead of inside a computer.  That's why, for me, it's a much better trailer.  I have a very hard time with a certain prequel trilogy because it never made that transition from CGI looking to 'real' looking.

From a story standpoint, yeah, this one smacks you hard over the head and I can do without that.

Just seen the longer trailer for this...ICK!

This looks like a hippies' wet dream!

Cheap swipes at The West as well...I'm getting a tired old 'war for oil' vibe off this.
And the green message may be a good one...but it's one we know and we don't need it to be force fed to us yet again.
Especially as WE are not moving little 3rd world natives out of their jungle homes...big corporate business is, often with the help of the natives fellow 3rd worlders.
And neither goes to the cinema much!
Don't preach at me Mr Cameron.

You can almost write half of this film from the trailer.
Let me see....
A troubled guy working for the wrong sort of people is sent undercover to get the goods on some good and fluffy people causing trouble.
Guy makes stronger friendships than he expected, comes around to see that actually these are not the bad guys the guys he's working for are the bad guys, and to top it all off...he finds love...lurve...with one of those he's been sent to betray!
OH NO!  The agony!  The Humanity!

Come on!  This is tired old cliche wrapped up in dodgy looking CGI sparkly paper and as subtle as a brick, surprising as a snowflake on a snowy day and looks as emotionally intriguing as tofu.

I was a little put off by the teaser trailer in terms of the Navi (the effects didn't quite sell it), but for those who are expressing their reservations on the Navi characters from viewing the online theatrical trailer, let's just say those characters look a whole lot better on the big screen.
I've just seen my first full length trailers for this during today's football games. Very different from what I'd expected.

I'm not sure who they expect to go see this film. It looks very much like a video game. I think they'll get the gamers and some fantasy fans, but I don't see this drawing any large mass audience.

Could be a sizable bomb at the box office, IMO.
Bomb, I doubt it.

what is your definition of a bomb in relation to this movie.
less then 100 mil.
I dont think that cameron has had a true bomb of a movie.. I heard the abyss did okay.. but not great.. I think that was his only movie that did poorly at the box office.

Will it be a bomb? A huge hit? Who knows, but it is interesting to see the similar pre-release experience that Titanic had so many years ago.

"I'm not sure who they expect to go see this film. I think they'll get the chicks and some history buffs, but I don't see this drawing any large mass audience."
I think Piranha II is his least successful film  :-)   But yeah, The Abyss did disappoint at the summer box office.  It's probably why they didn't list it among the movies he's directed in the new trailer.  It is one my favorite Cameron movies though.
