Apologies if this isn't the latest comic thread.

I finally read both issues of Incognito, and it's not bad. It plays with the differences in masked personas and how people reacted to "normal" and "out of the ordinary" personas.

^ I'm really digging it too. I loved the line where the lady said something to the effect of "How come it's always the losers that think they're better than everyone else". As that type of person, I found it funny because it's true .

I never read Criminal but I tempted to take a look since I'm enjoying Incognito so much.

I pretty much get anything that Brubacker and Philips do in comics these days, they haven't let me down (much), especially compared to some of the stuff the Big 2 are slinging out the doors these days.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

To answer Travis question, the books I'm reading that I can think of:

Invincible
Walking Dead
Astounding Wolf-Man
Golly!
Firebreather
Dark Avengers
New Avengers
Booster Gold

I've been reading the Superman books for a few months but may drop since they no longer have Superman in them. I also read a lot of Marvel stuff to keep up with Dark Reign, but I'm looking for places to cut back.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I got the new Previews today and it looks like Barack Obama is going to be in more comics than Wolverine. I know that Marvel had a huge success with putting him in Amazing Spidey and that the comics industry is a follow the leader type of business but is anyone going to buy Youngblood because Obama is on the cover holding a ray gun?

I'm dropping most titles that are going up to $3.99, and then picking them up in the dollar bins if I still want them later. I'm guessing that'll shave off about 5-10 monthly titles in the coming months.

Fortunately, I'm only buying two titles that are $3.99. One of those is Ultimate Spider-Man (which I think, technically, has one more issue before it hits $3.99) and I'll definitely keep it until the series ends. However, I may wait and pick up trades after they restart the series.

I took a look at February's sales chart and the top 7 books for the month are $3.99 and up so it seems like the price increase hasn't effected sales yet. At least, Batman's price increase gave you more more pages. The rest just look like Marvel saying "We want to charge more and the fans will gripe but they'll keep buying it anyway." I'm sure it's not that simple but that's the way it looks to me.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I'd be less likely to buy an Obama cover. We shouldn't get into that, but I'll just say I hope Kirkman doesn't feature him in Invincible. I did buy ASM 583, but I bought the Romita cover because he is a living legend and probably my favorite artist. Definitely my favorite Spider-Man artist. And, Waid proved once again that he should be the only writer on ASM. Funny, because I resented things he said in interviews about people who aren't thrilled with Brand New Day.

ASM is usually a $2.99 title and if that changes, I expect sales to plummet on a thrice-monthly book.

I have a buddy who buys the Waid issues of Amazing and he didn't realize that Waid did that issue until it became a big hit so he was pissed thinking that he'd have to pay a boatload because everyone was, as he said, "going crazy over a variant cover and a backup story". Fortunately for him, he only wanted the Romita/regular cover so he was able to get a first printing of it for $3.

I get the idea of the fun and hype of buying the Obama cover of Amazing Spider-Man but after that*, it just seems like "Been there, done that" when he just starts popping up in a bunch of comics.

*Except for that Savage Dragon variant cover where he's punching Bin Laden. That one's just awesome.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Great thread! This is the first time I've seen this thread, since I don't frequent the After Hours Lounge too much, but I want to contribute my list of comic book reads. I don't collect "floppies" or single issue comic books anymore. I mainly collect hardcovers and TPBs since they look much better on my shelf. Here are the more recent stuff that I've bought and loved:

-Walking Dead (the oversized HC versions of these are great)
-Powers (The newest TPB was finally released. I think it's been over a year since the last one. I also started collecting the Definitive Editions.)
-Punisher Max by Garth Ennis
-Punisher Omnibus
-Elektra Omnibus
-The Boys
-All-Star Superman
-Batman by Grant Morrison
-Fables
-100 Bullets
-Starman Omnibus
-The Joker (Azzarello)
-JLA Deluxe (reprints from the Morrison run)
-JLI hardcover reprints
-Ex Machina
-most Absolute DC Editions - the Sandman ones are the coolest books on my shelf

I'm mostly a DC and Vertigo buff, but I enjoy some Marvel, when it's done by a good writer. I loved the early JMS run on Spider-Man. I also liked Brubaker's Captain America and Astonishing X-Men by Whedon. My favorite writers are Garth Ennis and Grant Morrison.

I just wanna give a bump to remind people that today (finally) sees the release of the second half of Neil Gaiman's Batman tale in Detective Comics 853.

Good week for me- I got a Neil Gaiman book, Ex Machina and both Kick-Ass & Star Wars: Dark Times returned after months-long absence.

WEDNESDAY COMICS is unique in modern comics history: Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28” x 20” tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, with each feature on its own 14” x 20” page.
Spearheaded by DCU Editorial Art Director Mark Chiarello, whose past editing credits include BATMAN BLACK & WHITE, DC: THE NEW FRONTIER and SOLO, each page of WEDNESDAY COMICS spotlights the continuing adventures of DC heroes, including:
• BATMAN, WEDNESDAY COMICS’ weekly cover feature, by the Eisner Award-winning 100 BULLETS team of writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso
• ADAM STRANGE, by writer/artist Paul Pope (BATMAN: YEAR 100)
• METAMORPHO, written by New York Times best-selling writer Neil Gaiman with art by Eisner Award-winner Michael Allred (Madman)
• THE DEMON AND CATWOMAN, written by Walter Simonson (Thor, MANHUNTER) with art by famed DC cover artist Brian Stelfreeze
• DEADMAN, written by Dave Bullock and Vinton Heuck, art by Dave Bullock
• KAMANDI, written by Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN, GREEN LANTERN CORPS) with art by Ryan Sook (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, ARKHAM ASYLUM: LIVING HELL)

• SGT. ROCK, written by Adam Kubert (SUPERMAN: LAST SON), ilustrated by legendary comics artist Joe Kubert
• THE FLASH, written by Karl Kerschl (TEEN TITANS YEAR ONE, THE FLASH: THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE) and Brenden Fletcher, illustrated by Karl Kerschl
• METAL MEN, written by Dan DiDio with art by Ian Churchill (SUPERGIRL)
WEDNESDAY COMICS will arrive in stores folded twice to 7” x 10”, with the first issue set to reach stores on July 8.
Issue #1 on sale July 8; Issue #2 on sale July 15; Issue #3 on sale July 22; Issue #4 on sale July 29 • 1-4 of 12 • 7” x 10”, 16 pg, FC, $3.99 US

Last night, I did get to see a page of "The Demon and Catwoman" by Stelfreeze last night (I attend a weekly figure drawing class at Gaijin Studios, and Brian was nice enough to let me see the first page), and in that 14"x20" format, you can pack a lot of story/panels onto on 1 page. The original art will be enlarged by about 1/2" (very minimal) from the original page size for publication.

So, if you get all 12 issues, you end up with roughly fifteen 24-30 page issues for about $48 cover price, depending on story/panel pacing.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Did anyone read Damon (LOST) Lindelof's "Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk?" I know some were turned off by the delay, but it didn't even really come onto my radar until recently, so I didn't care. It's well worth a look. It's crazy, over-the-top, and intentionally hilarious. I won't even give any examples so I won't spoil anything, but it's worth waiting for the trade in any case. It'd probably read really well in that format.

One thing that seems different about Ultimate Wolverine (slight spoilers):

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I think in the regular Marvel Universe, if Wolverine lost a leg, that leg would be dead and he'd grow a new one back. As established in this book, Ultimate Wolverine has to have missing body parts reattached or he just has to make do without them. That might have even been established in a Millar issue of Ultimate X-Men. I seem to remember Logan getting really messed up in a fight in Scotland and it might have been mentioned. Whatever the case, Lindelof manages to take what seems like a move to depower Wolverine and turns it into him being even more powerful!

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

^ I'm a big fan of Lost so I picked them up. I fell in love with the book when the second and third pages of the first issue were a "Holy crap!" moment with Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Wolverine getting torn in half by the Hulk.
The nearly 3 year delay was a bummer but when I was able to read the story from beginning to end, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wizard World convention is happening in Philadelphia this weekend so I'll be grabbing some cheap trades and getting a few comics signed. There's also some pretty good TV/movie guests this year- Edward James Olmos, Michael Hogan, Emma Caulfield (her first US convention), Tom Savini and more. While that's not a superstar line up, Philadelphia usually gets Lou Ferrigno and some no name wrestlers so it's pretty cool in my book.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Lou Ferrig and Peter Mayhew are going to be there! Whoo hoo! The one I'd want to see, though, is Nog. But, I'm not going to be up there.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I went to Wizard Philadelphia today and it was fun. I got some stuff signed and saw some Q&A's.

I was kinda taken aback by Edward James Olmos charging $50 for his signature though. I'm not trying to knock the guy (if someone wanted pay me $50 for my signature, I'd go for it too) and there was a steady line all day so he probably made more money in a couple hours than I make in 3 or 4 months.

Edward James Olmos was charging $50/autograph at Dragon Con last year as well, and he was getting plenty of business, so it's what the market will bear, I suppose.  Thankfully I'm not into paying to get stuff signed (except I do have one photo I want Nathan Fillion to sign for me, but that's about it).  Adam West also charges $50/autograph these day as well.  I'll be wondering if Leonard Nimoy also charges that much at Dragon Con this year if he does, indeed, show up.

Oh, BTW, here are my photos from Heroes Con 2009, which was going on the same weekend as Wizard World Philadelphia.

The final issue of Ultimatum dropped today.  Sheesh.  I forgot to buy the new Mice Templar, but I bought this?  It's like the New Universe's The Pitt.  Take a universe with both potential and problems and just totally destroy it instead of trying to save it.  At least the Pitt and its aftermath were somewhat interesting stories.  I hope when Ultimate Comics launches, they manage to somehow ignore this event.  But, I think I've read that Loeb is getting a book.  Wonderful.
^ I'm a reader of Ultimate Spider-Man so to comprehend the last five issues of that book, I had to buy Ultimatum. Unfortunately, I still felt like I was missing tons of info since the flagship book made sure not recap any of the info from the other books. I assume this is the usual way that Marvel and DC work their crossovers in order to sell more books (which is understandable to some degree) but it was annoying to me since I don't think I've ever read a crossover event in the last 15 years.
I read it all, but I still get the sense you didn't miss anything.  I don't think what happened recently in UXM or UFF made much sense, either.  Loeb ignored all of it, for the most part, and had this stupid tidal wave come out of nowhere and disappear just as fast, and Bendis was the only one who managed to give that any weight or import.  He told a human story while Loeb just had a gleeful time killing everybody in sight. The USM Requiem book came out today and it was actually good.

Millar can be hit or miss, but I have to imagine when he comes in on Ultimate Comics Avengers, he's going to say, "WTF is this?" and maybe help Bendis right the ship.

The scenes with J. Jonah Jameson realizing that he was wrong about Spider-Man all this time was some of my favorite stuff ever in Ultimate Spidey.
You didn't say if you read USM Requiem 2, but that's all it is.  I think you'll like it.  It made me realize what a shame it was that Bagley didn't complete the entire run.

Yeah, I dug it. I miss Mark Bagley and didn't think they could replace him but I have to say that Stuart Immonen won me over by the end of his first full issue.

I don't know what's happening with Ultimate Comics. Clearly they'll want to play the drama of

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Peter's friends and family thinking he was killed

but I hope all the big stuff from Ultimatum will be dealt with in books other than the Spider-Man title.

And I guess since Jeph Loeb wrote both Ultimatum and Heroes,

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the end of Ultimatum 5 (when Cyclops got shot) seemed exactly like the end of the second season of Heroes when nearly the same thing happened to Nathan.
I re-read the Ultimatum mini-series and reading them back to back did help the story flow better but it still felt abridged to me. I'm sure it was designed so that you get the 'full story' by reading all the tie-ins but I don't think the flagship title should have had scenes where I felt like I was getting a "Previously On Ultimatum" quick recap of scenes from other books (just with Finch's art this time) and a few new scenes mixed in. Not to mention that the last issue just seemed alot more over the top and melodramatic than meaningful.

On an unrelated note, I started re-reading Ex Machina today since the end of the series is coming in the next half year or so.
I think books often read better like that.  Especially a delayed book like Ultimatum.  I know I have been reading this book called Viking, and I was lost reading the second issue.  I reread the first issue and then the second issue and enjoyed it greatly.  I bought Mice Templar but was never that taken with it, but I'm pretty sure it'd be better in one shot.  I just either have a bad memory or read too much to remember individual books that come out with several month gaps between issues.

Ha, I'm with you there. For me, it can get a little tough to keep track of things like Ex Machina, Kick-Ass or Star Wars: Dark Times when they can have 2 or 3 month gaps between issues. Although Ex Machina has really picked up the pace lately and since Brian K. Vaughan left Lost, I'm hoping that the last issues will be monthly or close to it.

When an arc ends, I usually go back and re-read all the issues. Fortunately, I read few enough books that that's possible.

Reports are coming out that AMC is looking to develop a series based on The Walking Dead.  Show frontrunner would be none other than Frank Darabont.  While I would think this would end up a little less graphic than if it was on HBO or Showtime, I'm all for getting this on the air.
Ultimate (Comics) Spider-Man #1 was a good read today.  I really ended up enjoying the new artist.  I didn't think I would.  The Manhattan spread looked like a lot of work, but it was worth it.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I'm sad that Peter isn't with MJ, but I'm interested to see how it happened and where it's going from here.  I hope Bendis doesn't do the Brand New Day thing too long where he keeps the events of the gap between the previous series and this one a mystery.
But, right now, the book looks nice, reads well, and my only complaints are that it's $3.99 and I have to wait for another issue.
^ I really enjoyed the story but didn't care for the art on Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. I didn't think the art was bad, I'm just not really into that style for a Spider-Man book. In all fairness, I could see it growing on me over time though.

I'm very happy to see that Ultimatum is apparently being tied up in other books that I don't read.

Does anyone else think that Disney's acquisition of Marvel could accelerate the end of Marvel physically printing comics? Maybe I'm just a pessimist but I could see Disney just saying "Eh, put 'em all online so we don't have spend any money on printing." I'm not talking about that happening tomorrow but it just seems like a major corporation being involved will speed things up to the very dark day of online-only comics. When/if Marvel goes that way, the printed comic book is dead.
