Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006) - Page 13

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Greg is right and I should have been more clear in the recommendation. 48 is a fantastic issue, but for the full impact you would need to have been invested in the story from the beginning. I guess I was pushing the series itself and just letting people know that issue 48 is quite the pay-off.

Greag, have you seen the cover to 50? That, along with what happens in 48, raises at least one major question that I'm reluctant to post here...

I believe it shows:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Carl alone, surrounded by zombies, right? What's worrying is that 49 shows Carl leading Rick with Rick's face completely in shadow. Are you thinking that means Rick's injuries are going to lead to him going zombie? Or, just that Rick is maybe going to die, too?

I wouldn't click that spoiler if you're unfamiliar with the series, but I tried to be as vague as possible.

I own the series in single issues (with the exception of the first issue), but I'm thinking of buying the trade of this latest arc so I can read it in one sitting without a lot of hassle. Is that weird?

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Your spoiler theory is exactly where I was going Greg (the second more than the first). I think it just might be possible that his story is done, though knowing Kirkman there is still quite a bit he could put him through.

And wanting to pick up trades for certain stories is nothing strange to me, though I have not been able to afford doing it as much as I would like. I have the complete run of The Watchmen and Sandman, and do occasionally feel like reading through them again. Trades would allow me to do that and still keep my first-runs in pretty good shape.

Walking Dead 49 is out today. Can't wait to pick it up after I get off work. I normally read my books from least interested to most, but I may jump right to this one.

I do the exact opposite.

Turns out it was the only book I bought yesterday, so it was first and last .

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

OK, I am hooked on comic books and I'm a girl. It was strange how it started. My husband was selling off his collection and he said, "Here, read this. You'll like it." It was a graphic novel called X-MEN, GOD LOVES MAN KILLS and yeah, I really liked it.

So I tried a few things. Mostly stuff he would recommend. Now I am reading some new titles and cannot put them down. INVINCIBLE and WALKING DEAD are two I love. I'm all caught up on DEAD but not yet on the other.

We both read a huge run of DAREDEVIL where he is "outed" and that was really addicting. I could not put it down and now that I am caught up to the current issues am going through trade paperback withdrawal.

I checked out some Marvel superhero books, but they bored me. Daredevil worked for reason though. Maybe it was the more gritty feel to it. Invincible feels like a soap opera. A good one.

What I like most are smaller titles from smaller publishers.

Are there any other girls out there reading these boy books?

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

It's just great to see someone else reading Invincible. Even with all the critical praise, it's criminally overlooked. Are you reading the trades or tracking down the individual issues?

You might also look for Astounding Wolf-Man. It's set in the Invincible universe and is starting to cross over more and more.

Actually, I tried it and did not like it. The art just... Blah. Not for me. Cannot get past my distatse for the look of the thing.

Heroes Con 2008 took place this past weekend. Here's my photo album of the weekend activities:

You like gritty? Try DMZ. If there is a gritty comic, it's that one. I picked up the first trade. After reading it, I added the series to my pull list. It's a good read as long as you don't mind reading a comic about a second American Civil War.

I haven't picked it up yet, but I did spend some time at the comic shop reading "Persepolis". From the excerpts I read it seemed like a pretty good book.

Newsarama.com : MICHAEL TURNER PASSES

After learning of his condition years ago, you never quite knew when his condition would take a turn for the worse, especially someone so young, but it was a tribute to his resolve to keep on producing what he could in the field of comics, and undergo all the medical treatments and procedures in combatting his condition.

RIP, Mr. Turner.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I just read about Turner's passing. While I didn't buy many of his independent titles, I did enjoy his work with Marvel and DC in a number of books. A true talent, and definitely will be missed.

Anyone reading Incognito? I'm curious to hear some thoughts on it.

Apologies if this isn't the latest comic thread.

I picked up issue #2, but haven't read the first issue yet. Perhaps I'll get to both issues this weekend. I still have a huge pile of stuff to read.

It was pretty good. Reminded me a LOT of the first issue of Millar's "Wanted" (which is the only issue I've read so far). It's worth a look, though if you missed it, you may have to settle for a second print. I know it sold out fast at my stores.

BTW, I thought Final Crisis was pretty atrocious in how it was integrated with the rest of the DCU in terms of scheduling.

Yeah, the second print sold out at my store too though. I planned on grabbing it and I was the third person to buy something at the store this morning. Of course, the guy that was in before me bought all four copies of the second printing that they got (what the hell do you want with 4 second printings?!). I was probably more pissed than I should have been over a comic.

They're gonna try to reorder and if he can't get it in, I'll just get the first print on eBay which is still about $4.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

For any Neil Gaiman fans, Batman #686 was excellent.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I bought it even though I have never read any Gaiman (well, one issue of the Eternals mini) and don't read Batman. I figured if I skipped it, it'd be sold out and expensive and then I'd want it.

Haven't read it yet.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Missed Gaiman was doing a Batman arc. With all this crisis business in DC and Secret Invasion in Marvel, I'm afraid to even sample a book any more as I'm too far behind in the Universes.

Currently ready the VizBig edition of DragonBall Vol 1. Not the deepest comic you'll ever read, but every chapter leaves me with a giant smile on my face!

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Just out of curiosity, what books are people currently reading?

I don't get tons of books but I'm reading:

Air
The Boys
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight
Ex Machina
Incognito
Kick-Ass
The Punisher: Frank Castle
Star Wars (all of them)
Ultimate Spider-Man

I'm guessing that someone of you guys read more in a week than I read in a month.

Did you know that we're approaching the final issue of Ultimate Spider-Man? It's to be relaunched a couple of months later as Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.

Isn't Marvel cancelling the entire Ultimate line, and re-launching 3-4 Ultimate Comics titles? I guess it's a 10-year reset button for the entire line. Eh.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I understand there's going to be UC Spider-Man, Avengers and some Loeb Ultimates book. The fourth is unknown. Numbers are being reset and the time jumps ahead, but current continuity is not erased.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm glad that they're just skipping ahead in time rather than a total reboot.

An amusing sidenote to that is that I'm not reading Ultimatum so when Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
New York City was hit by a giant wave in Ultimate Spider-Man,
I was kinda lost. On the plus side, Spidey didn't know what the hell was happening either so I knew as much as the characters at least.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Heh. You would have been lost had you been reading it. It was a pretty poor issue. The wave sort of came out of nowhere and was gone almost instantly. Bendis has redeemed it with his disaster movie take and his decompression of the event.

I read pretty much anything by Mike Mignola. The Goon. I guess I'm kind of still interested in The Walking Dead. Other than that, though, I mostly stick to reprints of The Good Old Stuff.
