Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006) - Page 11

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

The weirdest thing is when Superman is in a daze, and the civilians say:

"Run-- it's Superman!"

"EEEEEE!"

What?

Two pages later is a panel tailor-made for the ever-popular "take something out of context and make it sexual" websites, when Superman says to the bum, "Take off those clothes!"

I do believe it is Jerry Siegel's original script. It's not like it's impossible to get, as copies of it have been circulated around DC's offices and there's been talk off and on over the years of actually doing something like this. And they are working from Joe Shuster and the original studio's art as much as possible, which has likewise been reproduced in various places over the years.

Did he not know he was from Krypton back then? It seems odd that he was so bored with the professor's talk.

I can't remember exactly but I do know that the Kryptonian origins weren't really explored until the 1950's or so. It was more like "Okay, he's from another planet but who gives a crap. Here he is kicking the hell out of some strike breakers!"

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I very rarely read about comics online so I don't know if this old news but I was at Wizard World Philadelphia yesterday and Joe Quesada did a panel and said that they were going to get rid of all the Spider-Man books except Amazing* and publish that title three times a month. This is going to happen in the fall after JMS leaves Amazing Spider-Man. Obviously, this is a good idea for Marvel because if you only purchase Amazing and no other Spider-Man titles, you now get to buy three Spider-Man titles a month.

At the very end of the panel, they said there was a bold new direction coming for Spidey and showed a cover of him Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
holding a gun.
I'm sure you can't take that entirely at face value though.

*It's safe to assume that he wasn't including Ultimate Spider-Man.

Sonoda has a new Gunsmith Cats series? When did Dark Horse start the run on the new series? I haven't been following comics quite the way I used to. The only books I'm currently following are the Scrooge comics and Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo; however, if Dark Horse is publishing a new GS series I'm going to want to add it to my list.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

The new Gunsmith Cat's series is called "Burst", the first book came out last month I think. The re-formatted original series is on volume 2 now. they are both being published in the now standard sizedpocket manga style. The original series are big fat phone book style, the new one is a little slim. Most of the shops should be carrying it, it's a popular enough title, if not:

http://www.amazon.com/Gunsmith-Cats-...2020518&sr=8-3

I found previews to be particularly slow this month, there just doesn;t seem to be many titles that are must own for me. Which is good in this case, as that "Absolute Sandman Vol 2" will be mine.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Thanks. I'll check my local shop. They have gone to the digest format rather than the traditional magazine format like the first series. I know some people are purists but I'm not sure I really care for the back to front, right to left style. I find it hard to get used to. Either way, I'll get this series on my list.

I don't think it's Spider-Man holding the gun. Why would he need gloves? It's probably a mugger wearing a Spider-Man mask.

You could be right, maybe a mugger gets the drop on spidey

Anyone else completly un-interested in 90% of what is published, or is it just me? Maybe my comic nerdom has waned, but going throught he last previews, all the books I'm buying are collections of reprints. With Civil War, 52, coutndown...all events I skipped, I just can't be bothered to jump onto any super hero titles, prefering to buy the "Essential" and "Showcase" cheapo re-prints instead.

not giving up on comics though, I'm loving those "EC Archives" books. Just might be the most classy collection published outside of "Absolute Sandman". I love how they replaced the 3rd party ads with biographical info, and the art looks amazing. Some of our current artists could learn a thing or 2 from Wally Wood and Jack Davis. I hope the entire line gets the treatment.

No, I dutifully check the shipping list each week and my eyes just glaze over at the vast majority of releases. There are a few new talents whose works interest me but most of what I buy now are reprints. Doesn't mean I don't love comics; just that the industry has largely moved in a direction that I'm not interested in.

I just received my Fantastic Four Omnibus 2 this afternoon. Can't wait to tear into that, once I finish up the Silver Surfer Omni.

One new book that caught my eye is the Fantagraphics reprint, I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets. It's a Golden Age reprint of obscure artist Fletcher Hanks's work. Hanks was the kind of guy who wasn't exactly good, but his stories are oddly compelling. Samples here, here, and here.

Sorta. Beyond Star Wars comics (which I'm sure I'll buy till the day I die), I only regularly buy one Spider-Man book, The Punisher and The Boys each month. I'll be dropping Amazing Spider-Man when JMS leaves and switching over to buying Ultimate Spider-Man for my monthly Spidey fix (I have all the trades but never bought it monthly). Of course, there's odds and ends (like Joss Whedon or Frank Miller stuff) that I pick up too.

I do find myself buying alot of reprints and collections lately. Like Russell, I can't wait for that Absolute Sandman Volume Two. I just wish they were doing two a year. And I pick up the EC Archives and The Complete Peanuts books are a great time too.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

There's still a lot I'm enjoying. I'm trying to cut back where I can, and my next victim is Superman. I came in on Up, Up and Away and haven't enjoyed it since. No sense in continuing to buy it.

By the way, the Irredeemable Ant-Man trade comes out a week from tomorrow. I encourage you to pick it up if you haven't been buying it. The series is in danger of being canceled, so hopefully trade sales will help. It's only $9.99. I think that might mean it's a digest.

Edit: Well, buy it if you want, but the series is now canceled. A shame.

I haven't been following comics like I used to. When it comes to comics my interest waxes and wanes. I'm trying to avoid new series because I know I'll start adding more and more of them to my list. It doesn't help that most of the comic series I buy almost always end up cancelled or dropped by the creator. While I adding GSCats:Burst to my list I found another one that looked interesting.....DMZ. Unfortunately, it is up to issue twenty so a person would be pretty lost as to what is going on in the story. I'll have to wait and see if they come out with a TPB of the series and check it out then.

Does anyone know if Adam Warren has done anything lately with The Dirty Pair? I used to get a kick out of his work on that series. He had a good a good handle on those characters.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

There's two collections of DMZ out so far; they're both excellent.

I seem to recall Adam Warren mentioning that he is doing some new Dirty Pair work in conjunction with Dark Horse reissuing the older stuff. I'm excited to see that; I discovered Warren on Gen13 and Livewires, and got a kick out of Empowered (I'm patiently awaiting the collection of Iron Man: Hypervelocity).

There's no shame in being uninterested in most of what comes out; unless you've got a lot of money and free time, only caring about 10% of what comes out in a given week is pretty good. I'd just suggest checking out the other racks at the shop to see if it's the medium you're burned out on or just DC/Marvel/superheroes in general. Every once in a while it's good to purge the interconnected stuff and see what else is being done in comics.

Hey folks, just got done with uploading a slew of photos I snapped at Heroes Con this year. Here's the link to the photos and con report. I don't think there is much "info" in the con report, just a daily travelogue of sorts. Hope you'll like the photos.

If you ever want to see how Adam Hughes draws a smoking hot Black Widow starting from a blank page and taking 35 minutes (taking time out to sign some comics as well) to do the finished sketch, look at this set of photos.

For those who have been following 52 and Countdown, I have a question.
S
P

So, towards the end of 52, Shazam/Billy/Capt. Marvel changed Black Adam's "power-up" word. Then in Countdown, Mary marvel encounters an apparently powered up Black Adam. Now, if I followed the dialogue right, he figured out that the word was changed to "sorry", but then passed the powers to Mary, right? And I've been seeing previews for a Black Adam mini that is coming out soon, following his search for the word. Is this something that happens between the end of 52 and the events in Countdown? Or am I just all confused?

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I think it happened between the ending of 52 and the beginning of Countdown and may or may not be described later. Maybe in that miniseries, which I have not heard about.

At any rate, I'm pulling the ripcord on Countdown. Seven issues in, and I haven't enjoyed a single one. 52 drew me in from the start, and I'm a Marvel guy. I can't keep supporting this book that I don't enjoy in the least.

So, I'm down to the Spirit and the Supernatural limited from DC, and I'm not enjoying Supernatural very much, either. Was it always intended to be a limited series? I thought it was going to be ongoing at first. It's really not worth the bother, even though I'm a big fan of the TV series. In fact, if issue three isn't the least bit interesting, that'll be it for me.

As far as I know, it was designed as a six issue mini-series. It's not great but I kinda like it since it's a story that they would never be able to do as an episode.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I mentioned it before, but the word is that Marvel is going to take a good look at sales of the Ant-Man digest to determine whether the series will go on or not. If you have any interest, or just a spare $10, please consider buying it. I'd like to show you one of the best gags in the series, but it might be a slight spoiler if you want to see the joke in context. If you do, I think it will show up in the second digest, if there is one. If you don't care, the page is in spoilers below:

Do Xavier and Magneto have their powers back? If so, how did that happen?

Thanks!

Rumor is that this week "Madman Gargantuan" is actually going to be hitting stores. If anyone actually sees it, can you post it? I have it on pre-order still from Amazon, but with it supposedly being limited edition, I guess I don;t have much faith in them actually getting it too me.

It's not exactly what you asked for but it's listed in Diamond's ship list for this week (as separate hardcover and autographed editions).

I finally got that Madman Gargantuan! Beautiful book, my only nit pick is the paper is a little thin compared to other giant hard covers like this. Still, art looks great.

Mike Wieringo: RIP

I still can't believe it, 'Ringo passed away from a sudden heart attack at the young age of 44. He was a Pro's pro, with fluid storytelling skills, and a unique art style that is instantly recognizable and enviable. He was also a nice man, who loved comics, and his fans. I'll miss seeing him on an annual basis at Heroes Con, which will be a lesser experience without his presence there. I extend my sincerest condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

That's shocking and horrible. I mainly know him from his Spider-Man work, and he had a way of making the character light and fun. His variant covers for the Other, showing every variation of Spider-Man through the years, were the rare variant that were actually worth seeking out not for the scarcity, but because they were so neat to look at.

It's awful. His run with Waid on Fantastic Four was one of the best that book has seen, and I was expecting twenty more years of great stuff from him.

Very sad, I remember him mostly from his run on ROBIN back around the time of Nightfall and all that. Loved his art, had a toony feel without being too rubbery.
