Eastwood's "Where Eagles Dare"

There seems to be 2 versions of "Where Eagles Dare":

1. The first one has the "Clint Eastwood Collection" title on it
2. The 2nd one has no "Clint Eastwood Collection" title

The 1st one was released in 2003 while the 2nd one was released in 2005.
I was wondering if they both sport the same new digital transfer referred to in the first release?

I'm pretty sure this was just a repackaging. I don't remember anything about a new transfer.

Yup, just a repackaging. Where Eagles Dare was part of Warner's 5-movie set, Battlefront Europe, and like they did with North by Northwest in the Hitchcock set, they repackaged the film into an amary case to keep it uniform with the other titles. Otherwise, aside from the superiority of the keepcase... it's exactly the same.

While I have you fans of WED on the phone, so to speak, I recall that my laser disc had an intermission card (although no ent'racte). It seemed like an awkward place for one, though, and am wondering (now that the DVD has shown up without it) if it had been the intention during its initial theatrical run to include a break. Anyone?

I think I recall an intermission when I saw it at a theatre in the 70s.
And doing a quick search also indicates that there was music,
at least, it is on the soundtrack:
10 Intermission Playout (02:54)
11 Entr'Acte (02:49)

Definately had a proper Intermission title card, play out music and Entr'Acte music when I saw the film theatrically. Very disappointing that Warner omitted them out on the DVD (I assume in error).

The intermission occurred just after the first fuse is lit to begin blowing up the fortress. Presumably, this was in order to maximize the suspense element while everyone was doing their popcorn thing.

Yes it comes just after Clint Castwood closes the door of the room in the castle where the main plot has been divulged, having just set the charges in that room. It comes at the timing point 106mins.50secs on the R1 disc.

I don't remember any intermission, but that was 37-38 years ago in which too many years and films have muddy my memory banks.

Are you sure about that? the whole movie clocks in about 154mins.56secs.
The "middle" is about when Burton/Eastwood just have climbed through the window. chapter 21 of 42. around 79 mins.

Is it possible they made 70mm blow ups, and those prints had intermissions, but regular 35mm ones didn't?

Yes, it was shown in 70mm blow ups. I don't know whether the 35mm showings had an intermission. The end of act 1 music was slightly different and extended compared to that on the DVD version and can be heard in full on the CD issued on the Film Score Monthly label: http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=3750

To celebrate the film's 40th Anniversary, they're showing Where Eagles Dare next month in Bradford as part of their annual 'Widescreen Weekend' and Cinema Retro is producing a dedicated 80-page special edition, a taster from which you'll find here. Excellent stuff.

I saw Where Eagles Dare during its first run in San Francisco and it did not have an intermission. I suspect that (like The Cowboys and The Wild Rovers) the intermission and entr'acte (and overture for The Cowboys and Wild Rovers) were used for overseas engagements in Europe and Asia.

i can vouch that Cinema Retro are sponsoring the full 70mm version of this wonderful film as part of Bradford's annual widescreen festival celebrations. it will include entre acte intermission music etc and is being shown on its 40th anniversary. This is an occasion not to be missed. Any DVD versions do not come near as to seeing this epic on the 70mm screen but book soon as tickets are going fast!

If it is the digital projector (which I imagine it would be rather than just a DVD showing) it looks amazing. I saw Horror of Dracula on this and it looked better than it could have done on release day in 1958.

I've seen a few digitally projected (including Horror of Dracula), and I agree they look terrific, but with a three-panel projection movie, this seems a little like, well, cheating somehow

Well Becket was certainly worth seeing, although sadly the print was in a poor state - red faded and with Czech (?) subtitles. Khartoum looked amazing though and its epic feel worked better than ever on the huge curved screen.

A heads-up for anyone interested, Cross of Iron is playing next Saturday at 4pm at the Media Museum, I'll be there.
