Don't know when, but on the Charlies Angels season 3 set there is a card with other shows available from Sony and it lists Fantasy Island season 2.

GREAT NEWS.

Re: Fantasy Island season 2 is on the way.

That's news to me... I hadn't heard anything yet. Usually TVShowsonDVD does a great job of following all of that and they didn't have anything on it yet.

Are you sure it's not Season 1 on that promo card? It would be great if it's true. I really enjoyed watching this show and I can't wait for Season 2. I hope you're right!

YEY! I was worried it didn't sell good because of the stupid list price. $50 CDN for 16 episodes?

Re: Fantasy Island season 2 is on the way.

Don't worry Mick, It's definately on the card. It reads: Fantasy Island seasons 1, and 2.

Sadly that is basically the only new set mentioned. No Bewitched season 4, or Different Strokes season 3.

I don't know why Tvshowsondvd.com haven't brought it up. Maybe they are waiting for an actual release date before they post the news.

Re: Fantasy Island season 2 is on the way.

This is very good news Bryan. You're very observant. Maybe Gord or David would like to let the cat out of the bag on S2...

You wouldn't be able to scan that artwork and post it by any chance....?

Re: Fantasy Island season 2 is on the way.

Ah this is good news, especially for Aaron Spelling fans who'd like to see more Hart to Hart and (dare I suggest) the Love Boat! Maybe Sony is stepping up the pace finally?

Re: Fantasy Island season 2 is on the way.

Sorry guys, this isn't coming any time soon. The title was taken off the schedule after the insert was printed.

...and the moral of the story is...."TSoD is THE authority for TV/DVD release info on the 'net" If you see it posted there, "take it to the bank"

The Love Boat is a paramount property. Paramount said it was suppose to come out this year. August was the tentative release date. But it sounds like it is pushed back to 2007 now. Hopefully it makes it out!!

Re: Fantasy Island season 2 is on the way.

I'm really sorry about this thread. Usually, when I see something on an insert from a major studio, I tend to think it's set in stone. That being said, I definately think we will see a season 2(why would they put it on the insert in the first place?) maybe it's just a technicality Sony has to iron out. Maybe they are adding special features,(a tribute to Aaron Spelling maybe?) I think it is more a question of when, not if. Tell you what, let's let this thread die, and when we get any news we can get exited all over again.

Well, it took almost six years but its finally happening.

I'm so happy Shout is releasing this. I thought it was abandoned forever, not to mention season 2 is by far my favorite season of them all. The Bigfoot episode, Robert Reed as Dracula among other favorites. My goodness 2012 is turning out to be one of the best years for classic tv on dvd releases...at least for me it is.

Finally!

Poor, Abandoned Fantasy Island resumes.

I don't know if they'll be able to make it to the last season though. That was the one with Mr. Belvedere himself, Christopher Hewett (before he had his mustache) as Tattoo's replacement.

wow! this is a pleasant surprise. Any chance Shout! is going to be able to get more Love Boat seasons released?

No. Love Boat is CBS owned, not Sony.
I'm glad to hear this and I hope it sells well so we get S3 fast-tracked because that's the one I want with Joan Collins' "Cleopatra" episode! (The one that won her the part of Alexis on "Dynasty").

As long as they're cleaning up on abandoned Sony properties, then how about "Hart To Hart" before long??

Strangely enough I liked those episodes better than the earlier ones. I thought Christopher Hewett was great in that role. Hopefully we get all the seasons eventually.

Can someone explain for me the process that happens to show ownership,
and what the difference is between a show being aired by a network,
but i guess they don't actually own the show? How does a network get
ownership the rights of a show for DVD release? I don't know anything about
how this stuff works!

Studios produce television series. They put up the money to make the shows and pay everyone, and then they own the shows. These studios can be major media players like Paramount, Universal, or Warner Brothers. Or they can be small independent studios like QM Productions, MTM, or Witt-Thomas-Harris. The shows are licensed to a network for broadcast. That means the network pays the studio a fee to show the episodes some agreed number of times. The large studios are owned by conglomerates that also own networks. However, the shows produced by the studio may not necessarily air on the affiliated network. For example, House, M.D. is produced by Universal. Universal is affiliated with NBC, but House airs on Fox. At the same time, How I Met Your Mother, produced by 20th Century Fox, airs on CBS, not on Fox. The studios license shows to the highest bidder who gives them the best guaranteed deal for the series. Sometimes that is an affiliated network and sometimes it isn't.

The Love Boat was an independent production of Aaron Spelling. The Spelling library (all the shows independently produced by Spelling, but not those by Spelling and Goldberg) was sold to CBS/ Paramount several years ago. That means that CBS Home Entertainment now has the distribution rights to all the series once owned by Spelling's company, including The Love Boat. The fact that it originally aired on ABC is no longer a relevant factor. Sometimes, there are special circumstances like joint ownership or separate domestic and foreign distribution rights, but that's a rough idea of how it works, I think.

Thanks Lee, this is exactly the explanation I needed.
It does seem strange for a show like Love Boat that (at least in my mind)
was so associated with ABC now being owed by CBS!

So if I've got this straight, The Spelling-Goldberg shows went
to Sony/Columbia ended up with a licensing deal to Shout!
for the rights for the DVD's of Fantasy Island season 2?

whew! That's complicated.

That's exactly right, Grant. Now that Sony owns the rights to the Spelling/Goldberg stuff, they are free to license them out to companies like Shout, which is fortunate for all of us. But those deals are on an individual show-by-show basis. So seeing Fantasy Island doesn't necessarily mean we will see Hart to Hart, for example, even though they came to Sony together.

This is great news! I have S1 on dvd and love the show as a kid. I remember the show coming on after the Love Boat on saturday night. The stories were always well scripted, especially with guess stars.

There could be hope for other sony series!
