Re: Superman - Summer 2006
I got a call last night at 9:30 from someone who wanted to go, so I went, having nothing better to do. I didn't even think there would be seats that late. I liked it more than I expected. Good, not great, which is fine (and seems to be the prevailing opinion).

I was thinking as well that this guy was sure doing a lot of lifting in this flick. I would have liked more variety in his displays of power. I guess I should be thankfull for the absence earth/time reversal and memory altering gaze... yes, they showed other stuff, but the bulk was lift lift lift.
His ethics appear to have gotten a little elastic as well, what with the evesdroping on hubby and wife's convos, especially in their own home.
I was mostly bothered by the inconsistencies wrt to Kryptonite. I didn't think he could get anywhere close to the Island - wasn't that the whole point of wrapping it around the crystal? At the very least, he should have started feeling the effects during the boat rescue, or when he actually landed in front of Lex. And carrying what is essentially an enormous mass of Kryptonite... sure, he was bedridden for a couple of days, but still.
The score was good, with special mention to the epic choir segments (very short, but stood out in a good way).
Lex... I like the guy better at the head of a powerful corporate empire (see Smallville). A more elaborate plot wouldn't have hurt either.
Not enough of Clark Kent. At all.
The ending definitely dragged.

I fear this view may be colored by other sources, namely Smallville, as I go no hint of such conflict/resultion arc in the movie. As a matter of fact, a
theme may be the most glaring omission in this installement, not necessarely in contrast to it's predecessors, but rather to the standards of superhero movies nowadays (Spidey 1 & 2, Batman, X, etc...).

Glad to see I am not the only one who feels many scene had a CGI look to them, something I've been complaining about since the first trailer. "Plastic" is right. Not sure how I feel about that, it certainly pushes that universe further into fantasy land, again in contrast to the recent trend toward realism in the genre.
Ultimately, this whole affair feels a bit low-key for Superman. As did the first X-Men I guess, which bodes well for a sequel? Still, this is
Superman, not superman, you know?
