I could be mis-remembering, but didn't that boy have a teddy bear of some kind? That would seem to imply the kid is small, not old enough to be what we saw.

However, if the "zoo" is for conducting medical experiments, it is conceivable they did something on him to make him grow far quicker than he should have.

I thought of that too. I'm pretty sure I read something somewhere that "Walt's growth would be explained in Season 3" but even so I think Carl would have had to grow at way to fast a rate for it to even be believable on a show like Lost. If he were growing that much in a matter of 2-3 weeks (remember we did see the kid - or at least the bear - later walking through the jungle), It would just be too silly.

But it was down quite significantly from last season's premiere. From TheFutonCritic.com:

Compared with its second season launch a year ago (households: 13.7/21; adults 18-49: 10.0), "Lost" was down 18.98% in households and down 25% in adults 18-49.

Malcolm, keep in mind that Lost won the Emmy for Best Drama for its first season. It is natural for the show to uptick after that. Lots of people tuned in to sample. IMHO, the real measure of how a show has done is comparing it to where it left off. In this case, it gained a full million from the S2 finale. I take that as extremely good news.

Hey I just thought of something.

Maybe all the Others are gay...and that's why they can't have their own kids and keep stealing other peoples'.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

That would also explain Juliet apparent frustration with life... she looks like she needs a good... hmmm... nevermind.

They're stealing special children, to see if they can be in "two places at one time," as when Walt appeared in ghostly form to Shannon.

indeed. i'd be more than happy to help her out, in case she needs anything.

i hope this series pans out and goes somewhere. i'll be REALLY pissed if the ending ends up sucking, because i am loving this show, and i normally hate popular shows, apart from the sopranos.

anyone else starting to hate jack? i bet my girlfriend that jack's father is still alive. i don't know why, but i just think he is. my theory was that he was the head of the others. got shot down with that one pretty quickly. but have we seen his body yet?

Nope. Jack found the coffin but nothing was inside way back in S1's White Rabbit.

hmm, i don't remember that. we missed the first season on tv but heard it was really good, so we blind-bought it, and watched the whole season on a 3-day weekend. i probably should go back and watch season 1 again. i'm telling you guys, jack's father is alive.

For the record, we have seen Christian's body. We saw it in the morgue in Jack's first flashback episode.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

Also for the records, there is at least one instance of presumed resurrection in the show.

This one is literally up in the air.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

Quick read of the last many pages and just some random musings.
I liked the premiere episode better than the husband, but had some gripes.

I have a claustrophobic reaction to movies that include long stretches of powerless captivity or freaky manipulation of the key characters. It makes my skin crawl since I hate/fear ever having illusions (or real) freedoms stripped from myself!

Juliet was overlaid with menace and mystery and drove me ape. I would have clocked her at first opportunity. Memory is gone...What was the name of Rousseau’s daughter? Is that Juliet? Did she abet Claire’s release? She could be a future dissenter amongst the ‘others’ but I could not stand her experimental ‘setup’ of Jack in this episode.

Quote:
How far will Kate throw them into the ocean?

Ditto here, I turned to my husband and said “Those.. [handcuffs] are going in the ocean” as Kate stares at them on the table.
I agree...even with the facet of Kate’s character, later mentioned that she indeed is a manipulator and at times a passive aggressive.
BUT even passive aggressive’s have moments of venting before settling into a deceptive attitude of compliance. I thought it would have been MUCH more satisfying if she had gone for the long pass on a first set of cuffs....then sweetly put on a second set to get her coffee.

Quote:
but really what is the worst that's going to happen to her? If she was attacked in her clothes vs. out of them, would it make a difference?

YES! Psychologically...a tremendous amount. I called foul on that one too. But mayhap as a female I’m biased.
...you wake up after being drugged, disoriented chemically hungover, dirty, a shower is something you would long for...to pull yourself together...and gear up to face and deal with your new set of circumstances.
BUT – a female espcially would not be inclined to add to a sense of venerability by stripping in a creepy commercial (tunneled by maze-like lockers) strange shower provided by a captor! I would have never taken mine off short of forced threats under those type circumstances. This was not days after being abducted and already past first shock, fallen into semi-routine of obliging captors but only shortly after she wakes up and is trying to orient herself. I would have taken the shower – but –
WITH the clothes ON. (you can soap under your clothes!)

Why are the ‘monster’s’ no longer in the other’s ‘cages’.
What chain of events allowed them ‘freedom’ of the island. Deliberate release or accidental?
If a malfunctioning catastrophe, have the “others” attempted to bring them back into captivity?

I am dying to find out what weird trickery surrounds Michael and Walt and if my pet theory last season plays out. I want to see LOCKE!

Carrie: Foreshadowing? ...a book BEN would not like.
A book which surrounds a character whom garners sympathy for past mistreatment but once possessed of special powers, due to instabilities (or being pushed over an ‘edge’) abuses those powers?

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

My pet theory could still play. The four-toes could be very important to the history of the island, playing out to reveal “The island” had special powers which affected the ‘ancestors’ either due to the inhabitants being alien or taping into some special properties (from natural or non-terrestrial source) this island holds creating an isolated genetically unique self-contained world.
DARMA found the anomaly applying research and manipulation. In attempts to leverage “THE ISLAND” towards a greater goal has encountered unexpected consequences and corupted deters.

Wheww. Long catch up, looking forward to Wensd.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

Rousseau's daughter's name is Alex...rapid growth theories not withstanding, much too young to be Juliette. Though I'm sure we'll see Alex again. Certainly there were some consequences to her freeing Claire.

This is Alex, Rousseau's Daughter.

From Wikipedia
Alexandra "Alex" Rousseau
* Played by: Tania Raymonde
* Appears in: "Maternity Leave", "Three Minutes", "Live Together, Die Alone" (no dialogue), "The Glass Ballerina"
* Origin of name: Means "helper of men." This naming may be intentional by the writers, as she saved Claire's life.

Alex Rousseau was kidnapped by the Others after her mother, Danielle, gave birth to her. Alex is now 16-17 years old and appears to have been raised by the Others for most of her life. Despite her vague allegiance to the Others, Alex aided Claire in her escape from "The Staff", one of the DHARMA Initiative stations. She has also shown on several occasions that she is concerned for the survivors and Claire's baby, and often refuses orders given to her by higher Others (most notable in the scene present in both "The Hunting Party" and again from a different perspective in "Three Minutes" when she refused to escort the kidnapped Kate to Tom, instead passing the duty over to Pickett) thus making her true allegiance questionable. In "Maternity Leave" when Claire and Kate part company with Danielle Rousseau after investigating "The Staff", Claire made reference to the girl who saved her. Although Claire was oblivious to Alex's name, her comments regarding Alex's good nature and her difference from the sinister Others, left Danielle with an obvious feeling of relief.

----

I don't know how to add a pic, but she's the same girl that played Cynthia on Malcom in the Middle.

See if this works

The cages didn't house monsters, they housed bears, as was made clear in the last episode. Probably polar bears. And they are currently running amok on the island as show in S1.

I loved Zeke's comment to Sawyer. "Heyyyyy....got yourself a fish biscuit. It only took the bears 3 hours." LMAO

Thanks Rain...I'll keep my eyes open.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

Using the term 'monster's' generically in the sense that Yogi Bear is smarter {different] than the average bear. and the shark aquarium etc. appears unused for fish.

The Question is, - were the cages intended as holding pens or permanant habitats? Were they ‘sent’ out tube-grown for release (as a line of deterrence or part of a greater experiment, or simply allowed to roam while being still under observation) thus still within subject environmental parameters (whose control?) or did they ‘escape.’
If I remember there are indicators of a major past catastrophe (or a failed or successful coup?) is that when they escaped (or) were set free, sent out?

Are they free agents now or part of a directed plan?

PS: I am additionaly surprised at the long hiatus Smoky has had, since it did not appear end of last season though hints were dropped by the shows creators that indicated we'd see Smoky soon.
Looking forward to seeing that entity making its diaphanous entrance again on the island!

...I Like the 'animal' aspects of Lost. Horse/bears/dog/smoky.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

Loved Jack's reaction to being told that the Red Sox won the World Series, but then shutting up when the footage was shown.

The rest of the Sun/Jin subplot seems like stuff that didn't need to be revealed (except for how Sun's lover died).

Kate needs to swing more pick-axe in a dress.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

Liked it.

Ben has lived on the Island all his life (if he is to be believed). What does that even mean? Born there? Crashed/landed/swam/spruced up/teleported there when he was 13 y/o and 4 days?

Sawyer sizing up the enemy was fun, but not really in charater. He is a conman, who certainly knows how to handle himself (and a weapon) in a fight, but he is still a civilian, and in that scene is spoke like he was military.

Can't really think right now, but I wonder how neatly does this new bit of Jin-Sun fit into what we already know.

I am trying to remember where I stood last year wrt to the child's father... I think I was in the "Sun didn't cheat" crowd. Damn.

I have to say I enjoyed this more than the premiere.

Re: Lost season 3 discussion....

I never had any doubts that Sun cheated, so the only "new" info gleaned for me was how the other dude was dispatched, and we find out that Jin wussed out, but the end result happened anyway, and I was not all that surprised when it all came crashing down, I was like counting down as Jin got in the car, trying to compose himself.

So Sun has/had a character flaw of letting others take the fall when given the choice of doing the right thing. Will this crop up and will her character 'develop' so that she'll do the right thing the next time an opportunity presents itself, or will she fall back to her old ways?
