Atrocious picture quality and I'm not even getting into the music replacements

I watched a few episodes.
The picture quality isn't that bad. It's 25 year old lower budget show so it's exactly what I expected. The music replacement is very unfortunate. It is quite creepy, and sounds vintage with a lot of synthesizer work.

When I first heard about the music replacement I was upset I pre-ordered it. After watching some episodes, I realize I can live with it. It's a great show that I want to see released until the end.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

What music was replaced? The opening title sequence or music through out the episodes?

I am curious about the music replacements also.. I watched the fist episode and the opening and closing title music seemed to be the original. It must be some of the episode score music?

Anyone clarify this?

(Paramount has been listing music changes and even edited episode changes on releases lately but usually they do that as a legal thing... and sometimes there were no changes at all)

Re: Tales From the Darkside

It's the score in most of the episodes. The original theme & voice over is still there. To be honest I don't even remember the score music from the episodes so it doesn't bother me. If the theme music wasn't there that would be abother issue entirely.
I think they could have done better with the picture quality. True the set is still totally watchable, but I'm sure they could have improved the picture somehow. I've seen some of the episodes on the sci fi channel look better than some of the scene in some on the DVD. I'm just glad I didn't spend over $25 for this set.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

No offense, but it's not like Tales From The Darkside is a classic like the old Twilight Zone or Outer Limits. I thought the picture quality was OK for a budget show and didn't even notice the music, except for the creepy beginning and ending theme/voice music, which is the same. The shows are fun to watch and that's the important thing. I watched the first 2 discs, especially liked Bruce Davison in Stephen King's "Word Processor Of The Gods". I would definitely buy future releases (and hopefully someday, the "Monsters" series).

Tales from the Darkside was a low budget show shot on low quality stock and edited on 1" Umatic. It has always looked awful, it will always look awful. Its not Paramount's fault.

As for music replacement, I'm not exactly sure what they needed to replace since there was no licenced music on this show.

Maybe they couldn't reach a deal with the composer(s) of the incidentals, or perhaps good records weren't kept as to who owned the cues?

That may be the case. IIRC, on Trick or Treat at least, the bulk of the soundtrack was from stock sources.

EDIT: It just occurs to me how hillarious its going to be if they have to replace the soundtrack to "Ursa Minor" next season.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

I bought this on a whim (I was going to wait until the DeepDiscount June sale, but it beckoned to me at a B&M so I bit and bought it) and I'm satisfied with it. The image quality is a lot better than it should be and beats the Chiller transmissions by a clear mile. Sure, you can see it's made out of crappy video from the '80s, but it's a lot clearer than I thought it would be.

As for music replacement, I haven't noticed anything yet. Granted, the only time I've seen it is on Chiller so I may not be the authority here. Bottom line? The set is definitely worth picking up, and I wouldn't mind seeing CBS double up on some of the seasons as well.

And we need Monsters on DVD as well. A nine disc set complete series of that fantastic little show would make my day.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

So Far I've watched the first 4 episodes of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, and if they replaced the music I honestly can't tell.. the music so far seems very old early 80's fare. Maybe it was just certain episodes..?

Re: Tales From the Darkside

I couldn't tell either. To be absolutely fair, a lot of the show is made on the cheap so I can't really see if they would use actual music or a composed score. After watching 'It All Comes Out in the Wash' last night, it's hard to tell if they really put money into the show or not. Seriously, it was all just one set that was used for the majority of the show. It was on the level of a '50s televised play. Not to knock it too hard, but after that.....what music could they really afford if they were bargain binning it with bottle shows like that?

Again, I'm not knocking the show. I want the entire run along with Monsters. But some of the shows were really done on the cheap, even by Darkside standards. I don't think they could afford music outside of stock sources.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

On another note, I'm pretty sure Tales From The Darkside had all its sound elements mixed on the same track (ie: no separate dialogue, music, and effects track) since it was going to archived on tape instead of film. So barring the usage of some advanced audio filter, it would be hard to separate the music from the show.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

If anybody had any doubts about this being a seller, I grabbed one of the last two copies on Tuesday night at a Wal-Mart, and when I went in today on a raid, there were none left. I think it's quite popular around here!

Re: Tales From the Darkside

If the total sales of Season 1 are as good as the sales described in your post above Nick, then surely the second season will be announced in the next few months. Season 2 of Friday the 13th: The Series was announced not that long after Season 1 was released on Region 1.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

It seems to be a big seller here too. There were only a few copies on the shelves at Best Buy & the Fye stores I went to in the last week.
I'm really enjoying this set. The picture quality seems to have improved after the first epiosde or two (I've only watched the first disc & a few episodes on the second). How true it is this show was done on the cheap. Some episodes are actually hystercially funny. If this set is selling as well as I think it is, season two should be along in no time and an announcement for Monsters probably won't be too far away

Re: Tales From the Darkside

Has there been any episodes that show the Tribune Entertainment or LBS logos at the end or do they show the CBS Television Distribution endings?

Releasing Monsters concurrently would rock, and I'm surprised that show hasn't been in release before this. A glance at a few episodes of Monsters shows a higher budget at the very least for all those monster outfits (especially in the intro). I hope it comes to pass, these shows really deserve a second look twenty years after the fact.

And so far, I've cut through half the episodes in the set and they all see to have CBS/Paramount outros.

They just do that new CBS logo at the end of the show instead of the old logos.

Thanks for the tip.

I did find the music change in Trick or Treat. When it first aired the theme to Tales from the Darkside was used in the pilot. In the DVD the theme is only used in the opening and closing credits, and some episodes had the bumpers had the music change, but the rest I couldn't tell. I'm watching the first disc now, and I hope to see season 2.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

Well here's your smoking gun...

Its that blasted Capitol Music Library again. The same one that caused all the problems with The Fugitive Season 2 release last year. On the other hand Paramount did apparantly manage to successfully deal with OGM, which explains why most of the original music for "Inside The Closet" is intact.

Re: Tales From the Darkside

Well, I hope that CBS/Paramount is making some arrangement to fix that little problem they're having with the Capitol Music Library. It's one thing if its just one show, but if it's going to affect a lot of shows, they might as well make some settlement and move on with life.

In the episode "The False Prophet," there were some songs sung by the episode's star, Ronee Blakley; can anyone verify if those are still present?

i Just watched that episode and there was a twangy country song playing at the start of the episode but no lyrics it must have been generic and replaced. It is a shame, I am sure Ronee would have rather had the song in the episode. It had to be for legal issues.

Still love watching Ronee in the episode, it was the final episode of the season.

I hope they announce season 2 soon, I would guess a Halloween time frame along with another season of Friday the 13th the series.

Great news:

Season 2 of Tales from the Darkside will hit stores on October 6th. Just in time for Halloween.
This George Romero feature which will be in the Season 2 set sounds interesting. Is it an interview with him about Tales from the Darkside? It's good to see a DVD extra in the Tales from the Darkside Region 1 S2 set, being as the Friday the 13th - The Series R1 sets are extras-free.

Um, I think you're forgetting the incredibly riveting and extremely informative sales pitch on the S1 set.
