If memory serves me correct, the brand name of the soup is Zesto.

Nicely done, Lee!

(In full disclosure, I had to Google it).

Its been mentioned earlier in this thread, that before Universal gave this series to Shout Factory, they made new HD transfers. Now , if a studio is going to go to all the time and  trouble, it takes to do this, why did they give these away????? I just cant understand the logic in that.

Tony,

If you're referring to the low pricepoint for this series set, I'm guessing that a soft (Sd) DVD mkt is the reason for the lower price.  I'd guess that Shout is gambling on making up the price with large sales #'s.

Just me, but I think that most of the SD DVD studios have been looking at mkt sales #'s during the last couple of years and they see the writing on the wall with the increasing streaming, downloading, Netflix'ing.

I'm just glad that Shout is getting this show out there on Sd DVD in what I believe to be the twilight of the SD DVD era.

Jeff, sorry, the price is not what I was referring to.When I say giving them away,I mean not releasing it themselves, and giving it to shout. But I guess its for the better, because Ive never bought a dvd from shout where I was dissapointed.

I completely agree with this, Jeff.  DVD, including Blu-Ray, is a dying format.

Just hope that the machines will continue to be manufactured as they are with say, turntables for LPs, and not with what happened to laser disc players, and you should be able to enjoy your collection for many years.

The technology is ever changing, not always for the better as we saw with LPs to CDs to iTunes where each new development brought about a generally diminished quality. Until they try to ram 3-D or whatever is next down our throats, Blu-Ray may be the last viable standard bearer for quality, but the studios are shooting themselves in the foot with one misguided decision after another regarding it.  And don't look for any technical marvels for downloading just yet, though the next generation will most likely sacrifice quality for convenience.  But now for all intents and purposes we are between formats and the false front of something like Blu-Ray or the nail in the coffin program of things like the WB Archives are being presented and executed in such insulting ways it's going to make the next big idea seem all the more attractive.

My advice would be to treat DVD collecting as you would LPs and CDs, something that had its day in the sun and is still hanging around no matter how many eclipses try to block it out.

Universal probably made HD masters of the show for future sales to TV stations. Now, they have the HD masters and they also make money by licensing the episodes to Shout.

Travis, yes thats true. But they wont be making nearly as much , thats why im puzzled they didnt do it on their own.In general I find it odd, all the diffrent studios farming their titles , the last few years.

The show isn't making enough money for them to care about continuing to release it. By licensing it, they make some money and they do nothing to make it.

It's less risky this way. They obviously don't have the faith in classic television DVD releases which is why this was shelved to begin with. This way, they're guaranteed a certain amount of payment regardless of how it performs while another company will be bearing all the risk of bringing this classic to market. And this release should satisfy many fans, which also creates good will for Universal since this is a program from their back catalog that many wanted and regardless of them not being the publisher, they're still going to be associated by fans with this release.

And I suspect those license fees will go a long way toward paying for the restoration and HD transfers for this series, which is prepping this series for many more years of syndication ($$$ for Universal) and future digital releases of this program (Again, more $$$ for Universal).

Seems like a good deal for the fans, Shout, and Universal.

Thanks Walker, I was pretty sure I had it correct.

Discussing the 3rd season of LITB, this for the most part is a Beaver/Larry season. Towards the end of the 3rd season, Larry is no longer seen in the episodes and Beaver's other buddies fill in the void. I think this is because Rusty Stevens family moved away causing Rusty to leave the series. I don't recall if there was a "farewell" episode for the character of Larry, I don't remember there being one. There might have been a mention or two in some episodes about Larry having moved away.
I don't think they ever mentioned about Larry moving away -- unless it's in a scene that has always been cut from the syndicated prints.

I know he suddenly popped up in one episode in Season Four.  I assume Rusty's family was visiting L.A. that week, so he was back in town.

Larry was my favorite of Beaver's friends.  He got Beaver in trouble as much as anyone, but he wasn't as slimy as Whitey, Gilbert and Richard.  His "chubby" replacement for Season Four, Harry, was one of the show's rare mistakes.

I also regret that the show lost Judy Hensler, as much a classic character as Eddie Haskell, if you ask me.  Her replacement, Penny, didn't have Judy's depth of awfulness.

Very well stated, Walker.  I'm in full agreement with your assessment of the situation.  And I am thrilled to be getting one of my "holy grail" shows released in a complete set, especially considering this series seemed completely dead a month ago at this time.  It's been great news that has got me excited again about this hobby.  My enthusiasm had waned significantly over the past year, but this perked me back up.  Even if there aren't many other surprises when it comes to the vintage market, I'll still be very satisfied because of this upcoming release.

Gary "bring on Larry, Eddie, and a few select Cheryl Holdridge episodes for good measure" O.

Its a good thing I preordered my copy of season 3 , when I did.Because the price at amazon,  has now skyrocketed to 40.49 !!!!I preordered it at 31.49.Also theres a big price jump on the complete series , amazon now is selling the preorders for 179.99 !!!!
Interesting, I don't usually do the "out there aways" pre-orders, but I did in this case while planning out my years spending budget and what I wanted most (too many blind buys and knee jerk reactions to sales in the past).

So I pre-ordered this as well as Mister Ed season 3 last week. Both went back up in price to being a minimal discount now. I wonder if this is a Shout thing or just something Amazon does to gauge interest? I'm sure both will go down again in time but it is nice to know I have it locked in.

re: "I wonder if this is a Shout thing or just something Amazon does..."

It's completely in Amazon's hands.  Studios (such as Shout) or their retail distributors (in Shout's case it would be Vivendi) have nothing to do with it, and only care that the seller (Amazon, in this example) pays them for the wholesale price of the merchandise Amazons buys for resale purposes.

Has Amazon raised pre-order prices before, only to drop them back down shortly before release day?

Had this held this in my cart.  I didn't even realize I hadn't placed the order.!!!  It's still sitting there, but now with a higher price.  Oh well.  Hopefully it goes back down and someone will post the good news here if it happens.

I learned my Amazon lesson :(
Send them a email and tell them that, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll let you place the order at the original price. It seems like I've heard of someone else that was able to do that, and Amazon always seems to have pretty good customer service.

I like that one about the tub as well.  Geewhiz, I haven't seen these in so long.  The simple stories and delimmas will be such a breath of fresh air.  I can't wait to get these.  I may wait though since I'm working through Andy, Dick Van Dyke and just picked up S1 of Gomer.  Just not enough hours in the day even for goodness like this.  At least I have the relief that I can actually snag it when it's ready.

Package art (kinda cool if you ask me; check out what Beaver caught on his fishing line!) for The Complete Series

That picture of the Beaver with his fishing line so much reminds me of The Andy Griffith Show.

I too have lots of DVD-TV sets that need to be watched. Some of them haven't even been opened! So I am not in a rush to pick up the Beaver series once all of it gets released. Plus, the price ($179.99 as of 3/1/10) for it doesn't look too hot right now anyways.

I am going to wait on Mister Ed. I've noticed that Amazon at one point had the series edited first season on sale for $22 bucks. I am sure someday the remaining season sets will come down, at least, to that price.

Works for me. Simple, fits on the shelf nicely, and doesn't appears like it should in anyway compromise the disks.

I think your right. I couldn't wait so I picked up season 1 at the $22 price, season 2 around $25, and now season 3 at $28. Amazon pricing is very fickle and bounces around a lot. I really wanted to make sure I had at least the first three seasons with the Addison's, which I think are the best episodes.
