I completely agree with this, Jeff. DVD, including Blu-Ray, is a dying format.
Just hope that the machines will continue to be manufactured as they are with say, turntables for LPs, and not with what happened to laser disc players, and you should be able to enjoy your collection for many years.
The technology is ever changing, not always for the better as we saw with LPs to CDs to iTunes where each new development brought about a generally diminished quality. Until they try to ram 3-D or whatever is next down our throats, Blu-Ray may be the last viable standard bearer for quality, but the studios are shooting themselves in the foot with one misguided decision after another regarding it. And don't look for any technical marvels for downloading just yet, though the next generation will most likely sacrifice quality for convenience. But now for all intents and purposes we are between formats and the false front of something like Blu-Ray or the nail in the coffin program of things like the WB Archives are being presented and executed in such insulting ways it's going to make the next big idea seem all the more attractive.
My advice would be to treat DVD collecting as you would LPs and CDs, something that had its day in the sun and is still hanging around no matter how many eclipses try to block it out.
