I’ve been DVR’ing the shows for several weeks now. I can’t tell how much the episodes have been edited, but they don’t seem to be too hacked-up, and it sure is great to see stuff from the later seasons again. Aside from this and the new Netflix availability, though, I would still really like to see the entire series released on DVD ASAP.

Further thoughts:

Considering the apparent DVD sales and production boost from the recent Mary Tyler Moore Show cast reunion, does anyone think a similar Beaver reunion would help it’s cause? And if so, what would be the most likely scenario for such a reunion?

Also, IF the remaining seasons do finally see the light of day on DVD, it’s obvious that the budget would be very tight. Taking that into consideration, what’s the likelihood of any former cast members donating their time to the cause as a tribute to the show and its fans? And before anything else, I want to say that I think it’s just plain sad that Frank Bank and Ken Osmond were asked to provide commentary without pay, given that this injustice happened in the very beginning when deep-pocketed Universal was involved and before low sales were even an issue. I’m just trying to envision an ideal solution to a lousy problem. If the money just isn’t there now due to lower sales projections, then perhaps doing something for the joy of the experience (in this case, cast members gathering together for what-might-be-but hopefully-wouldn’t-be the last time, reminiscing in interviews and providing free commentary) would be better than doing nothing at all (sitting out in protest)…although I would still understand and would not hold a grudge if the latter was chosen. Just a crazy thought, that’s all. But if there’s any way whatsoever for the production company to scrape up some form of compensation, then pay ‘em, darn it!

I heard that the producers of the Seinfeld series attempted to get the actors to do commentary for free, and when they refused it jeopordized the release of that set!

I've had different people ("insiders" or execs/producers) who all have access to the same info give me somewhat different viewpoints on whether LiTB sold well or not. I'm guessing the point is that there are different expectations for sales based on the size of the studio or company putting it out. What I believe we can say is this: LiTB did not meet the expectations of Universal, but had it been put out by an independent, somewhat smaller, company it probably would have been judged to have done OK. At least that's the way I'd interpret the situation. As to whether or not another company will look at those numbers and decide to pick up the series or let it stay dormant only time will tell. But I never meant to suggest the show would never start back up. We all know anything is possible.

Gary "thanks again for the encouragement, friend" O.

Hi, Gary, and you are more than welcome! I look forward to your postings on this forum more than any others...and I truly hope you're right about "Leave it to Beaver." I'm not happy with only two seasons, and am anxiously waiting and hoping that Universal or someone will eventually release the remaining four. I want "Wally's Play" on DVD, for starters!

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

Good bargain Mike, but im sure all us hardcore beaver fans all own this. That would however make a great gift for any casual classic tv fan, who doesnt have this.Man, and I thought I got a good bargain on amazon, when I got each season, a few years back for 19.99 each !!!!

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

TVshowsondvd.com listed on Nov. 4, 2008, there would be a live Internet broadcast on Shokus radio November 5 featuring Jerry Mathers and Frank Bank. The post specifically said (speaking of Jerry and Frank):

"Both gentlemen have written best-selling autobiographies, and both will share their memories of working on the series as well as their lives afterward. There will also be an update on whether the widely anticipated subsequent episodes of the original series will be making their way to DVD in the near future."

Did anyone get to hear the Internet broadcst? Even more importantly, was anything said on the broadcast to give us hope that LITB will be out sometime before we're all in nursing homes?

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

Based on past experience, I'm afraid it wouldn't matter what either of those two said: to perhaps overstate the case, they have been shown to have a somewhat tenuous grasp on truth.

For instance, Tony Dow himself said that Frank Bank's "memoirs" were more what he wished had happened to him than what actually did happen.

And Jerry Mathers tends to exaggerate his popularity. I wouldn't be surprised if the spin he gave this situation was, "The DVDs were so popular, they couldn't keep up with the demand, so they're taking a break before producing the next season."

Speaking of the Beaver Gang, I heard that Tony Dow has produced a sculpture which will be on display at the Louvre! Gee, Wally, that's really neat!

(Well, it turns out it's not THE Louvre, but some shopping center NEAR the Louvre. Still, that's closer than most of us get.)

Gee Wally, how'd you get to the Louvre?

I'm sad to report that one of my all time biggest TV crushes has passed away. Cheryl Holdridge died on January 5th after a battle with lung cancer.

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

Well I broke down an bought season 1 and 2 for 15.99 Canadian each (along with an I Love Lucy and 2 Hitchcock Presents seasons on a amazon sale), even though I have a feeling if we ever get anything else from this show, it'll be a complete 6 seasons. I mean the first 2 will probably be generally out of stock by then.

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

and I broke down and bought a bootleg set of the remaining seasons, until an official release occurs.

I wanted to bump this thread and hopefully we can still draw some interest for LITB Season 3-6 on DVD!  Does anyone have any updated information.  Now would be a good time to contact Universal to let them know of the interest in continuing this series!

i would sure love to see the series completed.

Jack,

As far as I know, there's been no word on this one.  I'd guess most here are hoping that Shout! or some other independent studio can obtain licensing rights for Beaver to get the remaining seasons released.

In the meantime, I'm getting an occasional "fix" with a WAV file from my favorite season (6) of the show by listening to the opening "jazzed up" theme from S6 on my PC

"LITB....starring Hugh Beaumont....Barbara Billingsly....Tony Dow....and Jerry Mathers, as the Beaver"

According the the Copyright website. I did a search on Beaver Goes In Business, from 1961:

Type of Work: Motion Picture
Registration Number / Date: RE0000440329 / 1989-10-18
  Renewal registration for: LP0000020678 / 1961-06-03
Title: Beaver goes in business; motion picture. By Revue Productions, Inc.
Series: Leave it to Beaver, TP 13258
Copyright Claimant: Universal City Studios, Inc. (PWH)

Variant title: Beaver goes in business
Names: Revue Productions, Inc.
  Universal City Studios, Inc.

I would venture that Universal does hold the rights to all 6 seasons.

Mike, that's for sure but after that 4-yr wait from Sony with Barney Miller S1 - 2, anything can happen.  I hope Shout! can get the rights to finish up LITB.

LITB stalling out after only 2 seasons is one of the great disappointments in my TV on DVD experience. C'mon Universal! What happened to, "Great television is Universal"?

I couldn't agree more.  As far as abandoned series, this is easily the biggest disappoint for me - by a mile.  Not only is it my biggest disappointment, it's the biggest mystery of all stalled series in my book.  I mean come on, Universal doesn't have a ton of classic b/w TV to draw on.  Surely this show was their #1 iconic 50's series.

Gary "LITB being abandoned after only 2 seasons is the the craziest thing I've ever seen in the TV on DVD world" O.

I agree wholeheartedly Gary (and Chris and Jeff, too!), and I just cannot understand why no S3 and more by now. I mean, there's GOTTA be some popularity left with this show! Wasn't TV Land still running it until just recently? Sheesh--it's has to be one of the longest running shows on TV Land!

If there's any show that completely captures my "nostalgic" heart, it is Leave It To Beaver. There is some historical significance with LITB: it was the first tv show from a kid's perspective.

One thing I do find a little peculiar: I don't ever recall seeing a "Christmas" episode.

There wasn't one.  But Beaver appeared as an angel in a Christmas pageant at the end of one of my favorite episodes, "The Haircut" in season one.

Update: Jerry Mathers is introduced by Oprah Winfrey on Monday's September 21, 2009 Oprah Show. It is an episode where Oprah goes back in time to the 1960's.

Well, if Oprah can't get us the balance of LItB on DVD, then no one can.
