Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

I don't know why, but for some reason when I act like a know-it-all and make a positive prediction about something, the opposite happens.

So I'll give it a try here.

I hereby positively predict that Universal will never again release another season of "Leave It to Beaver" -- this series is absolutely, positively, definitely over!!!

There -- the announcement for Season 3 should be any day now!

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

Well universal annouced several titles this morning for july.obviously LITB was not among them.If they are announcing july titles now.
Then that would put September into early October titles about 2 or so months out from today.Which of course would be the timeframe for LITB 50th anniversary.Which I so hope they are at least planning a release for that timeframe.I can't see them releasing season 3 anytime sooner.
Since we are up to July releases and the 50th anniversary releases would be 2 months out from that point.

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

Aww.. I was hoping this set would be released sooner than October. What takes them so so long? It seems like forever since season 2 was released to DVD. It should only take 6 months, usually Sony takes 6 months, Paramount is usually only 3-4 months and a few that don't sell good like Warner Bros.. Mama's Family etc take years to release. This set must have been pushed back.

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

HAS ANYONE ALSO NOTICED HOW EXPENSIVE LEAVE IT TO BEAVER IS COMPARED TO OTHER BOX SETS. THREE'S COMPANY $18 AVERAGE PER SET, THE MUNSTERS $24.00, I LOVE LUCY $27.00-$30.00 AVERAGE, BEWITCHED AND I DREAM OF JEANNIE $25-30, SANFORD AND SON $13-20 AVERAGE, THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW $25-30 AVERAGE.... LEAVE IT TO BEAVER IS $35-45 PER SET FOR SEASON 1 AND 2 DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU BUY THE SET AND EVEN ONLINE IS EXPENSIVE. I DO KNOW SOME MORE SETS THAT COST MORE THAN $40 LIKE CSI, ETC BUT IT IS STILL TO HIGH FOR LITB AND DOES'NT SEEM TO BE GOING DOWN. SOME FANS CANNOT AFFORD OR WILL NOT PAY $80 FOR 2 SEASONS ON DVD...

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

I mentioned here I skipped "Beaver" because the price was too high, and I got called all sorts of names.

Only names people get called around Mayfield are "squirt" and "creep."

I'll tell Ward to talk to the Beaver about this, Joe.

All right. Let's go down to the lumberyard and watch the fire. Or would you rather just goof around?

Welcome to the HTF, Derek!

Nah. Only a goof would trade marbles this time of year.

I never realized until watching LITB that "marble-trading" was a seasonal sport.

Who said old-time TV wasn't educational?

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

I cannot believe it.. I just saw Leave it to Beaver on Ebay for $14.99 as a buy it now on LITB Season 1, special edition with the lunch box. I just ordered it, I guess it is a sale and he has dozens up for auction as a BIN that I saw on Ebay. I read some pretty bad reviews about the lunchbox (special edition) on Amazon but at $15 isn't bad at all and I am willing to take the risk. I heard the discs can get lodged etc but I couldn't pass up that deal and from his feedback he has sold a lot too and has excellent feedback so if anyone wants to check it out go ahead. The special edition is on Amazon for $57.99!!

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

My supposition is:

Many people were disgusted with Season 1 because the prints were inexcusably grainy and the price was somewhat high compared to similar sets and, above all, many discs failed to play due to the dreaded problem with Universal DVD-18's.

Therefore -- Season 2 sales were a fraction of Season 1 sales.

Conclusion -- There will be no Season 3.

However -- Universal has no one to blame for this but themselves. I find it hard to belive LITB wouldn't sell as well as "I Love Lucy," "Dick Van Dyke," "Twilight Zone," "Andy Griffith," and other shows of the 50s and 60s that managed to sell well enough so that the series were completed (no fewer than 8 season sets for the last-named show!)

But I still cannot fully understand WHY the OUTDOORS scenes are absolutely 100% GRAIN-FREE. Not a speck of grain in the outside shots. They look beautiful too. Looks like they were filmed yesterday.

IMO, the inside scenes are too grainy, but not to the point of being a huge detriment.

YMMV.

But that "indoor vs. outdoor" difference is still a head-scratcher to me.

Now David, we've gone through this before... Remember someone said the reason the indoor scenes are grainy was because they had to use faster film (grainier) for indoor scenes in order for the show to be lit properly. Also, the reason the graininess shows up on the DVD and not on syndicated runs like on TVLand is because on DVD we are seeing the episodes as sharp as can be (about 500 horizontal lines of resolution), therefore the grain will be evident. On TVLand, we are seeing the show more softer looking (regular TV/Cable only displays about 300 horizontal lines of resolution). In essence, we are trading sharpness for grain...the show will look sharper than it does on TVLand, but with that sharpness, we will also be able to see the original grain. The outdoor scenes, which used a lower rated film stock, looks perfect on DVD...You kind of wonder why they didn't use whatever film stock was used for The Dick Van Dyke Show or I Love Lucy, since indoor scenes look great on their DVDs.

I thought I remembered being a part of that discussion awhile ago!

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

Just guessing here, but what if they had to use a differen't film stock or perhaps even a differen't camera for soundstage shots versus the backlot scenes. Maybe back in the day of "low-def" TV broadcasts the difference was not as noticeable as it is today on DVD.

You bring out a good point...In I Love Lucy, and especially in The Dick Van Dyke Show, I remember very few outdoor scenes that were actually shot outdoors, and not on a soundstage. This is probably because those shows were done in front of a live audience, unlike Beaver. What few scenes I do remember outdoors in Lucy were basically stock footage, which was grainy. So maybe the film stock on those shows was also grainy...the only reason we remember Beaver being grainy indoors is because there were alot more outdoor scenes in Beaver and when you see both indoor and outdoor scenes in the same episode, the indoor graininess becomes more apparent...Come to think of it, I can't remember any scenes on the Dick Van Dyke Show taking place outdoors!

Re: Leave it to beaver season 3?

I don't know much about it -- but since Beaver looks grainy indoors -- and no other show of the era does -- is it possible they used cheap film? I've always thought LITB might have been done cheaply -- it was never very highly rated (which translates to lower advertiser rates), and they always did 39 episodes a year, so cost-cutting might have been called for. (Although I heard Tony Dow interviewed on radio a few months ago, and IIRC he said it was an expensive show to do! Which doesn't mean it was -- he might have been told that by the producers when he asked for a raise! -- but that's what he said, unless I'm misremembering.)

You're right. There are none. Unless you want to count the two shots (maybe three) of the Petrie car on the road in "My Husband Is A Check-Grabber". But those could be some kind of "stock" shots unearthed by CBS for those car scenes (which would be my guess), instead of actually being filmed by Carl Reiner & Company.
