Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

NO BD movies....

Ok, Boot time is about 5 seconds from Power Button on, to a Blue Samsung Screen.

With placings disc in drive, and hitting play, took 15 seconds to start Star Wars Episode 3...

DVD drive smooth as Silk....MOre pics to come...

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

So the HD DVD player is about 6" high? It must be built like a tank, because it looks like one. How does the build quality of the Samsung compare? It looks like a lightweight compared to your HD DVD machine. Man, I sure envy you guys. I'm still waiting to just get a look at an HD DVD player. When you guys pull the trigger down there......you really pull it.

I'd burn my money if I had your guys cash..........well, probably not.......but I sure would find a way to spend your guys money filling my shelf with high def goodness.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

That Samsung looks so cool! Their is nothing like the smell of new audio/video gear.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

Whoops. Looked at that picture of the Samsung stacked on top of the Toshiba again. What I thought was the top of the Toshiba, was really the bottom third of the Samsung. DOH! The HD DVD must be about an inch or so higher than the Sammy.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

How do the two units compare for fan noise?

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

I am trying to fathom the possible purpose of a composite video output on a high-def media player.

It's like nipples on men.

I hope we don't have to wait until Tuesday or later to get some BD discs.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

nice!!! =). i read that this player converts EVERYTHING it reads into HDMI 1080p. do you have a 1080p display to take advantage of this? even SD-DVD is upconvereted to 1080p. FINALLY!, 1080p magic! how is it?

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

I love the way the Samsung looks. That's exactly how I'm gonna set up mine, the Samsung player stacked on top of the Toshiba.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

Wow two members already with BD, this is going to be good. Maybe pop in Fifth Element Superbit scaled to 1080i so you can compare it with the HD version when you get it.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

i was afraid BR won't be out until the fall!, now that it's FINALLY OUT, we shall see what happens.

i'd like to see a comparison of a film digitized and sourced from the same 1080p files on both HD-DVD/BR via VC-1 codec. i'd love to see a comparison on that. of course, that would mean both formats would have to be thoroughly optimized from the source before the comparison can take place.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

Don't use The Fifth Element for what Blu-Ray can do with PQ as it is a poor transfer at best. Some of the other Blu-Ray titles are being reviewed as much, much better.

Sony should not be the studio to look for to give reference discs. Look to Fox or some of the other studios who do great DVD work. The same attitudes of the studios to DVD quality will transfer over to Blu-Ray HD. You watch.

I still want the master audio soundtracks at their original resolutions too! Not this 16/48 downgraded stuff!

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

How is the protective layer? Scratch resistant/proof?

Are you guys insane? The heat issues alone would make me AT LEAST put them on seperate shelves, with the Samsung on the bottom.
Heat risies up as we all should know. PCs run VERY HOT, and the Tosh is nothing more than a PC while the Samsung is an actual dedicated disc player.

Another gratuitous Sony slam. "TFE" transfer may be what the film actually looks like. No problems with "50 First Dates" and the like.

It dosnt. There was a newer HD transfer shown on HBO that looked perfect so its not a "sony slam"

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

I have a question regrading normal DVDs on these HD players. Are they multi region?. Can they play a region 2 DVD and PAL?

There seems to be some question about this so the following is taken directly from the User Manuals.

Samsung's User Manual:
Both the Blu0ray disc player and the discs are coded by region. These regional codes must match in order to play the disc. If the codes do not match, the disc will not play. The region code for Blu-ray discs is region A and DVD-Video the region is 1.

HD DVD's User Manual:
Both the HD DVD player and disc are coded by region. These regional codes must match in order for the disc to play. If the codes don't match, the disc won't play. This player's code is region 1.

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

Don’t forget that the announced regions for Blu-Ray were different than the ones for DVD: Region [1] (Americas, East, Southeast and South Asia (except China)) [2] (Europe, Africa and Mid-East and [3]Russia, China and the rest.

However, this seemed to change (and given Robert’s post, the change must have occurred) to 3 somewhat different regions (and differently named: [A] (Americas and East Asia), [b] (Europe, Africa & Mid-East) and [C] (Asia & Australia/New Zealand/Oceania (except East Asia)).

A couple of anomalies: US territories are region A regardless of location (e.g. Guam) and French territories are region B (e.g. French Guiana). East Asia means Japan, Korea & Taiwan)—not to be too political, but this means that China and Taiwan are in different regions.

On AVS, several members have stacked lighter DVD players on the Toshiba with no problems whatsoever. But I do think you make a good point, which is why I purchased extra long component cables from Monoprice.com. I may just put the Toshiba on a seperate table until I get a better shelf for my stuff.

EDIT: Fedex just delivered my Samsung! Time to play!

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

How does the Samsung deal with layer changes on SD-DVD discs? Are they noticable at all?

Re: Samsung Blue Ray in the House!!!

First impressions:
The Samsung is a beautiful piece. I love the piano black look, combined with the silver.
Don't have any BD's to play yet, so I popped in my SD DVD of SUPERMAN, a transfer I'm familiar with. I'm using component for the time being, so no upconversion, but this is the best 480p picture I've probably ever seen on my television. Very crisp, very nice black levels, saturated color. Sound is very nice and suitably bombastic when it needs to be the through coax digital. The remote is much more responsive than the Toshiba, and the load time seemed a lot faster to me, as well.
Can't wait to get some BD's to play on this baby!

Larry on the opening scenes after the credits, when the camera dollys up to the red sun- how does the 'glow' around the sun look? are the gradiations very smooth or 'stepped' in noticeable bands?

This was one of the discs I used to audition my first progressive scan purchase, and was surprised that these gradiations looked more posterized on a Sony player (forgot the model number, this was 5 years ago). My display was a Sony 53HS10- I would have thought two products from the same mfg would be the optimal duo, but I actually liked it the least- go figure.
