Re: Criterion in September

OMG! Seven Samurai re-mastered, 3-disc edition? Brazil anamorphic? Amarcord anamorphic? Playtime 2-disc so George can stop sighing? Years of waiting all paying off in the same month!

Where's the nearest blood bank? A lot of us are going to be throwing quite a hefty chunk of change Criterion's way in September.

Re: Criterion in September

All the Brazil extras look like they'll be the same on the new set as the original release, with the NOTABLE change of a new anamorphic transfer. It's cool that they're releasing that as a 1-disc as well, so those of us who have the old 3-disc can just replace the old first disc with the new one.

But those are a LOT of new extras for Seven Samurai. Wow, that might very well end up being the best release in Criterion history.

Re: Criterion in September

If Brazil got upgraded, I was hoping Criterion wouldn't stick it to those who picked up the current 3-disc set by making it so that we would have to rebuy. Thanks Criterion for releasing the new master on a single disc.

And put me down for The Seven Samurai SE. Now, if only we could get the restoration demo available on the Region 0 version of the original release. :p

Re: Criterion in September

1. Does this mean these Criterion Classics are now going to sport that goofy new logo?

2. New Spine Numbers?

3. Any features excluded from the previous releases (hey, maybe we'll get that Seven Samurai restoration featurette!)

Man, I can't wait till Criterion starts doing DVDs in HD!

Re: Criterion in September

None of their previous re-releases have featured different spine numbers, so I assume the numbers will stay the same for these new ones as well.

Re: Criterion in September

I'm ecstatic about Brazil anamorphic. I remember emailing Criterion to request that years ago, and I'm very happy that it's actually happening. The fact that it will be available separately so I don't have to re-buy my box set is just icing on the cake.

Thank you Criterion for putting the fans first. I wish all studios had the same mentality.

Yes to the "goofy new logo." The cover art and specs for each title are available in the links of my original post.

Re: Criterion in September

Nice release list there.

Seven Samuraii and especially Amarcord are big ones. And if the rumors of Playtime are true (it's gonna come eventually regardless) that would be fantastic.

As someone else mentioned, I wish Criterion would jump on HD already.
I cant bring myself to purchase DVDs anymore. Would love to see these movies in HD.

To sigh or not to sigh, that is the question. I sure as hell hope this Playtime pans out!

Re: Criterion in September

Couldn't agree more - Criterion's offering of a single disc anamorphic BRAZIL for those that already have the previous edition just shows what a classy imprint it is - hurrah!

Re: Criterion in September

Seven Samurai on three discs? Does that mean the film will be spread over two? That would be awesome! I can't wait to see this film remastered with today's technology... this is gonna be one of the best DVDs ever!

I think pretty much everyone emailed Criterion to request an anamorphic Brazil, and I'm overjoyed. I'll confess to not having picked up Brazil yet, as I wanted to wait and see if an anamorphic release would come out, and it seems my patience has been rewarded.

WOO-HOO!!!

Re: Criterion in September

I'd like to see Fox license some more Fox or Universal titles. Does anyone know of any progress being made along these lines? Their last Fox title seems to have been "Young Mr. Lincoln".

Re: Criterion in September

Yep, I, too have to offer kudos to Criterion for allowing me to replace one disc in my Brazil box. After buying the laserdisc version, then the DVD set, there was no way I'd buy another box.

The Brazil set with an anamorphic director's cut just shot the set up in the rankings where it belongs.

Re: Criterion in September

Great news!

I hope SS is packaged in a slimcase so that I can slide it nicely in my Kurosawa 'Samurai Triolgy' box set.

Also not crazy about those silly tilted C logo on all the covers. What's the point?

The new artwork for Armacord is very nice though. There's way to many DVDs going on my wantlist than I can afford!

It doesn't say for sure, but I would assume that the movie is going to be spread over the first two discs. It's about 16 minutes longer than Children of Paradise, which Criterion spread over two discs for their release a few years ago (although there's a more obvious disc break for that one, as the movie itself is in two parts).

Re: Criterion in September

I am def picking up the single disc of Brazil plus Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai does have an intermission, so it'll likely be split at that point.

Re: Criterion in September

It's been a long time since I was really excited about a Criterion release but......... Woo-Hoo! Finally! SEVEN SAMURAI!

I'll also be picking up the 3-disc anamorphic Brazil.

Jigoku sounds interesting. A definite rental.

Really? I've seen it a couple of times in theaters, but I don't remember there being an intermission. When does it happen?

Re: Criterion in September

I have to throw out a few "WOOT!"s for the release of JIGOKU (a/k/a HELL); I think it's one of the most important hard-to-see movies ever. It's groundbreaking use of bleak subject matter and still-terrifying gore would easily be considered influential on all manner of horror films if anyone besides me had ever heard of the darned thing.
And it provides great Asian competition for those infamous Ron Ormond evangelical films like IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSEMEN DO that still play "Christian" drive-ins to this day, in terms of trying to scare the audience with what happens in the fiery furnace.

Re: Criterion in September

Mark, I'd never even heard of "Jigoku" before this announcement, and I suspect that those of you who have are doing back-flips over this outta nowhere release! It sounds a little like the sort of flick that Criterion might have included in their "cult film collection" (was it going to be called "Eclipse"?), so I wonder if that's still a go?

Midnight Eye (website devoted to Japanese cinema) has a really interesting write-up on "Jigoku" here: http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/jigoku.shtml
