Disturbing, Dave>h--I love the [HD-D1's] SD upconversion. Although one disc versus another shouldn't make a diff, please drop another line after you've tried other SD DVDs. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

"Disturbing"

You are telling me!

I am not 100% sure what the difference between 720P and 1080I is but there is a definite change in picture quality to my eye, and 1080I has always been the standard I prefer. I am hoping it isn't a permanent problem.

I will be sending a note to Toshiba once I establish if it was disk specific or if there was some other issue or if it is specific to this update and my TV.

I have another HD TV (an Insignia from Best Buy) which I think is 1080i and fully HDMI so I will try that and see if the 1080i works. Could be specific to my TV I suppose.

Anyone know if I can revert to 2.0???

Thanks,

Dave

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

I reverted back to 2.0 last night.

The problem I had with 2.2 was that I could not play either SD DVD or HD DVD in 1080i via my HDMI/DVI connection. I didn't try this through component so maybe it isn't an issue when there is no HDMI handshake needed.

What happened was when i hit the resolution button on the remote, RESOLUTION came up on the HDMI screen and the machine froze. I then needed to hold the on/off button for 5 seconds and turn the machine off.

Both SD and HD dvd would playin 720P but the HD A1 would not let me change to 1080i.

This could be TV specifc. I will write to toshiba when I have a few minutes.

I was really hoping to enjoy 2.2 but it seems that it doesn't work with my set up - HD A1 via HDMI/DVI to SAMSUNG DLP.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

I reverted back to 2.0 only to find Dreamgirls and Flags would randomly mute sound while go into fast forward. Downloaded 2.2 again last night in the hope that the earlier one was corrupted. Fingers crossed as I have friends coming over tomorrow to watch Flags.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

I had to go from 2.2 back to 2.0 this weekend myself. My XA1 played flawlessly with 2.0 before ungrading to 2.2 and once I went to 2.2 I keep getting the treaded "NO HDMI LINK" message on my player and the player seemed 10 times as slow to respond. I thought this was resolved with 2.2 so either I got a bad firmware disk from TOSHIBA or there may still be some issues with the firmware.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

Along with my review copy of Blood Diamond I received a firmware disc of 2.3 to enable the web-based extras. Haven't installed it yet, though.

That's remarkable, Mark! Do they know which machine their reviewers have, or did you just get a variety?

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

Actually, we got a curious email from Warner a couple weeks ago asking whether we were using a first or second generation player for our reviewing. I said first gen, and lo and behold, here's a first gen update disc. Just did the update and everything seems to be working OK. The online content for Blood Diamond is kind of limited (interactive map of Africa with about a dozen countries in conflict with description of the unrest and their resources and use of child soldiers, and two polls--one about the subject matter of the film and one about what you want to see on HD DVD), but it works. I guess they're starting slowly. The update doesn't seem to have adversely affected the player in any way from watching 15 minutes of the movie. The update was a lot faster than previous ones---less than ten minutes all told.

Geez Louise. I love this movie--I think it should have been nommed for best pic and Zwick for best director. Held off on the BD due to the promise of HD DVD-exclusive content. THIS is it?

I continue to look forward to full reviews of the HD DVD.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

That's just the online content (so far---my understanding is that they should be able to add more); there's also an IME, plus something similar to Universal's U-Control that allows you to go to featurettes on various topics in the middle of the movie. None of that will be on BD until they get BD-J working properly.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.2!!!

None of that will be on BD until they get BD-J working properly.

Which is mandatory as of October, yes?

To the extent that the IME may be a re-presentation/regurgitation of supps available in other form on the disc and the interactive content doesn't have a high "RVQ" (repeat viewing quotient), I'd be inclined to opine that this hardly sounds like format-war tilting content.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Has anyone experienced their player turning off during playback? Happened to me repeatedly this weekend when trying to watch Bourne Identity. Same with Bourne Supremacy. Older titles Casino and Apollo 13 play fine.

Per prior post, I never received a 2.1 disc and didn't do it via the Web or burning a disc. Skipped 2.2 given all of the DVI-related problems (and my set is DVI). So the current firmware on my HD-D1 is 2.0.

Tried using the official Tosh 2.2 disc I got from you, Timobi, and throughout approximately a dozen attempts the player smilarly shuts down after reaching between 20 and 40% completion.

I'm having difficulties connecting to the Internet to attempt firmware upgrade that way: "VUP Error 121" after both leaving DHCP and DNS on, and turning them off and manually entering IP address and other information.

Has anyone else experienced the player shutdown? I'm wanting to get some indication that this is firmware-related, or if something hardware-related is the culprit.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Paul,

The Bourne Identity played fine on my machine (still fw 2.0 too). I haven't played Supremacy yet.

Never experienced it during play (or when not playing a disk, except after the one time during my 'initial setup phase'. I probably made a mistake then, but I don't know what exactly).

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

I just got 2.3 in the mail. Will wait to hear some others feedback before I even think about installing it. Still using 2.0 and still no problems yet.

Toshiba has sent me the past few updates without having to ask for them.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Thank you, Cees. Which model do you have?

Jon, might you happen to have played Identity or Supremacy?

Spoke with a Tosh rep this morning and they did not have any documented issues with either of these titles. Requested 2.3 disc.

Paul I have Supremacy and it has played fine with 2.0

I am running 2.3 without any issues so far and have had it installed a couple of weeks in my HD-A1.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Forgive the tardiness of this reply but does anyone with 2.3 know if Tosh resolved the DVI issues with Samsung dlp's?

I had a problem with the HUD for Transformers. Wondering if 2.3 might fix this. I don't have hi speed internet so would need to wait for a disk anyway.

Anyone heard if there is another firmware update coming at all?

Thanks, Dave

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Regarding this player, how have people found it? I am going to get a HD DVD player due to the number of title on HD DVD which I cant get on Blu Ray. I have been very happy with my Panasonic Blu ray player, but have no experience with HD players and need some advise.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Craig,

You're in the right subforum (not in the right thread - this one is about the firmware upgrades ) to ask any question you want about HD DVD players.

If more experienced owners know the answer, they will be only happy to tell you.

Fire away, either using a thread about the subject you want to ask, or start a new thread freely!

This is exactly what this forum is for.
Good luck with your new addition.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Dave,

It was specifically said in the description of the update that problems with the DVI connection were solved. Here and there testimonies of members of this and a few other forums have confirmed that.

I'm not totally sure if the one you're referring to is one of those, but chances are it is!

Cees,

Thanks for the info, I have 2.3 on order now and will let you know if it solves the problem with 2.2 I encountered. I hope so!

Guess I will then have to get myself a high speed internet connection to take advantage of all the new internet interactive types things you can do!

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Dave,

You're welcome!

Yes, an internet connection is the fastest solution to uopgrading the firmware.

BTW, here's some info from Toshiba's site, about V2.3:

Quote:
Q1. What does this update do?

A1. This firmware update improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web- enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, improves certain video and audio processing capabilities, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba.

Q2. Why do I need to turn on DHCP and DNS?

A2. Turning on DHCP causes the player to automatically detect its IP address and other network information from your internet service provider’s DHCP server. Turning on DNS causes the player to automatically detect the DNS server address associated with your internet service provider.

Q3. I purchased an HD DVD disc that contains/has the capability of downloading web- enabled network content. What do I need to do to view this content?

A3. First, be sure that you have properly configured the player’s Ethernet port. If your Ethernet port is properly configured, perform the firmware update process to update the player’s firmware to the latest firmware version. Once you have updated the player with the latest firmware, follow the directions that came with the HD DVD disc or that appear in the menu of the HD DVD disc. Should you experience problems viewing such content, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.

Q4. The HDMI output does not work or works intermittently with the HDMI or DVI input on my HDTV or monitor. Does the new firmware address that issue?

A4. The firmware update addresses and improves HDMI and DVI connectivity issues. If you still experience such issues, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable. Make sure your display input is set to HDMI (or DVI). If your display has more than one HDMI/DVI input, make sure that all connected HDMI/DVI source devices are powered on (even if not in use). If none of these solve the issue, please turn off the TV and the HD DVD player. Check all connections. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable. Turn on the TV first and then turn on the HD DVD player. Should you continue to experience issues, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

Toshiba just sent me version 2.4. I haven't installed it yet and don't know what it adds or what problems it addresses if any. The only issue I am aware of is the fact it freezes anytime I switch away from the HDMI input on my switcher to check a score or other reason. Otherwise my HD-A1 continues to work fine, clunky operation and all.

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

My Toshiba AC3 says in the menu that my installed update is 1.1/1.1
??

Is that right? So in the mean time I have downloaded and saved in a folder in my XP PC the firmware update today that reads HD-A3-1.3.ISO and is 38.6 MB in size.

I am going to burn this to a CDR and then place the disc in the tray of my Player and follow the on screen maintenance of the player's menu and install this update rather than over the Net directly to the player in another room.

Should I chicken out at this point as the player works fine and I have had no error messages during playback of (mostly) regular Dvds ...

Comments??

Re: HD-(X)A1 Firmware Update now available on Toshiba website. Now version 2.3!!!

I tried to download and burn the 2.4 firmware update but I kept getting a "Cannot burn to disc" error after a few minutes. After 3 tries on 3 CD-Rs I just called and ordered the upgrade. I've never had this problem before on either the Toshiba HD A1 updates or the Samsung BDP-1000 updates I've burned in the past.
