post reviews of shows that you have seen this summer

last show i went to was pearl jam in dc last tuesday
the show was fucking amazing. i was in the 200 section towards the back of the sides but i could still see them fine. They played with an amazing amount of energy compared to the one show that is on dvd (live in nyc, Vedder looks like he's a little bit sick on that show) I really liked how they started betterman with the keyboard player instead of the traditional vedder guitar. when someone posts the setlist, they can anwser this question, but what was the second to last song played (vedder dedicated the song to dick cheney.) while the show stared out playing alot of radio hits, they backed off them about half way through the first set. Also surprised that they only played two songs from ten "even flow" and "alive". also, no
"daughter", "rocken in the free world", "baba o ryley" and almost nothing from riot act. My Morning Jacket was ok, but for some reason I couldn't get into them. There was also a preset song with Eddie just on an accoustic guitar. So I really enjoyed the show.

here's a look at my summer concert schedule
june 24
Dope w/ Bleed the Sky - A New Revolution - Makeshift Romeo at recher theatre
july 12
she wants revenge at sonar
july 21
Kottonmouth Kings w/Hed P.E at rams head live
july 24
candlebox at rams head
august 6
ozzfest at nissan

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

The only thing that I really have time to see this summer is Ozzfest in Indy. I was only going for System of a Down, but I'm pretty stoked about Avenged Sevenfold. Should be interesting.

is ozzy playing your date? He's playing mine, but I don't know if the rumor that he was doing second stage is true or if thats just for one date.
Also, would you happen to know how long the main stage acts play for? Also, apparently soad is taking a very long break after ozzfest is done.

Yah, that's why I bought a ticket for this year's show. I'm a huge SOAD fan, and can't pass up one last chance to see them live (for the foreseeable future). No Ozzy at my show.

I've never seen Lynyrd Skynyrd live, but they are coming to my area soon, and I am interested. Could somebody please tell me what to expect from this year's tour?

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

I've got tix to The Futureheads, Matt Costa, Dave Matthews Band (Fenway and Randall's Island), Steely Dan/Michael McDonald, a bunch of free shows happening I plan to take advantage of (Seu Jorge, Mates of State, Belle & Sebastian...), and a few other shows I'm debating buying tickets for - Calexico/The New Pornographers, Galactic/Umphrey's McGee

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

I saw the Kenny Chesney show at Glendale Arena last night.

Carrie Underwood: She has a fine voice, but she's just not a natural-born performer. I had trouble understanding the lyrics most of the time, so either the sound mix or the enunciation was a problem. She could stand to learn a few things from her tourmates about creative lighting. Hers was not in sync with the music, and it just seemed uninspired.

Dierks Bentley: I saw him when he toured with George Strait, and he has sure come a long way since then. His lighting and sound were top-notch, and the entire show was high-energy. The only ballads he sang were radio singles, which was just fine for the party atmosphere that night. If his career continues as it is, he should be a big draw as a headliner in a couple of years.

Kenny Chesney: We were sitting at the back of the arena, so we were pleasantly surprised to see him enter from a rising platform behind the sound board. The best way I can describe his show is a feast for the senses. His stage is relatively large, and lights are used in just about every conceivable place. His music is wonderful, and he played my favorite song of his, "Anything But Mine," to perfection. The only bad part of the show (to me) is that Uncle Kracker overstayed his welcome. The duet and "Nobody Just Like Me" were fine, but when they started "Cowboy," I was inwardly groaning. Although he says he likes to change up his shows from year to year, certain traditions are still in place. The intro video, "How Forever Feels" before the encore, and "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" plus a jam to close the show are still present, for better or for worse. I would like to see "Living in Fast Forward" as an encore song someday to change it up. Kenny can sing well, but it's his charisma and energy that make the show special.

Next concert I'll see: Dwight Yoakam, Pat Green, Jason Aldean, Jake Owen, and Erin (plus fireworks)

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

Saw Staind w/ POD, Taproot and Flyleaf. Good show overall. Staind was pretty good, but the LED lighting or whatever it was was more or less blinding. Pretty standard set, good show as always. POD kicked @$$. They put on an excellent show and I would go see them again. They know how to get the crowd involved, not to mention they came out and hung out just behind the main floor crowd after their set Taproot - not really a fan of them, but a decent show. The lead singer walked all over the place and sang pretty well. Flyleaf, who I had never heard of before, impressed me enough that I went and bought their CD. That's a lot of lungs for such a small chick. Not a long set, and I couldn't understand most of it, but it was good.

So, is nonbody going to see Madonna? Just like her previous 'world' tour, she does about a hundred US dates and then a token five or ten European .
I really would like eyewitness reports

I've seen Madonna, and I'll see her again - I'll hit 15 shows over the course of the tour...

And for the record, she's doing 21 non-US dates and 30-something US shows - it's not a big imbalance...

I saw them at their first show after a ~2 year break in Indy with Chevelle last year, and was quite impressed. I had been a casual listener, but aside from a few technical problems they played a killer show.

Well, of those 21, 9 are UK and 4 France (actually Paris), so not a whole lot of shows for the rest of the world...more than half of her tour is still US.
Still better than Re-Invention, 39 US, 17 Europe (UK and France only, with a few exceptions) dates, nothing in the rest of the world.
But I notice on her site these two tours aren't actually called world tours, unlike her previous tours.
I'm just angry because I never get to see her .

And if you don't like the show, he'll kick your butt too... That is scary. Coming to my area too, when I saw that I was thinking WTF?!?!

I had really only listened to one album and only a few songs really caught my attention, but they did put on a better live show than I was expecting. Maybe one of those bands that is better live than in the studio?

I am going. Saw 4 shows the last time she toured but my job is keeping me too busy this summer to see that many. I'll probably end up at 2 or 3.

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

Wound up getting pretty damn good last minute tickets to see Tom Petty tonight at MSG, geat show, Trey Anastasio opened, Stevie Nicks guest vocals on a few of Petty's songs. Great energy, a bit predictable but this was one of those bands I wanted to see at least once since I know many of these artists won't be touring too much longer.

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

Not really reviews, more of my upcoming (and pricey) summer/fall concert season in no particular order:

Bonnaroo '06 (already past)
Dave Matthews Band [Atlanta and Charlottesville (final show of the tour)]
John Mayer (2 shows in Atlanta including final show of tour)
Jamie Cullum
Black Crowes/Robert Randolph
Ryan Adams
The Allman Brothers Band/The Derek Trucks Band
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Paul Simon

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

On July 1st, I went to the KIIM-FM Freedom Festival in Tucson. Here are my thoughts about the show.

Erin: It was drizzling during her show, so I was not in the best mood to listen to a newcomer. Even so, I was not impressed, and I don't think she has the career of a star ahead of her.

Jake Owen: He was the surprise hit of the night. All of his stuff sounded great and had a rocking edge to it.

Jason Aldean: His two big radio hits were nice, and he also did medleys of Alabama and 80s rock. It was a crowd-pleasing, enjoyable show.

Pat Green: He has a decent voice and stage energy, but he can't enunciate to save his life, and his song selection was poor.

The fireworks happened here. They were fine, but some of the music choices were odd, and the fireworks ended before the last song did.

Dwight Yoakam: His set was shortened by 15 minutes due to poor event planning and weather. He was great as usual, but I missed hearing "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and other hits from that era. He did a lot of his early material, some stuff from his new CD, and some of Buck Owens' songs in tribute to the legend. When he started up with "Honky-Tonk Man," the energy level skyrocketed, and I couldn't help but dance to the music. His shows are always spontaneous, and he barely pauses between songs, so you get your money's worth with him.

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

The only concerts we will be seeing this summer (or more like heairng this summer) are:

Guster

Fiona Apple

Train

and

O.A.R

All free! Free because they are performing at a lake front venue and we are planning on parking across from the venue on the other side of the lake and bringing a picnic to enjoy ourselves. The sound at this venue is great so you can hear it from anywhere close by. Plus, because it is outdoors, you can still see the stage a bit. This amphitheater has some great performers play there. I am looking forward to Jack Johnson coming back this way again.

* and yes, we usually pay for concerts and go in the venues, but being as we are on a tight budget this year... this is the only place we can really get our music fix without paying.

Lucia,

I'm afraid it's gonna be a while...Jack has made it quite well known that he was taking a 2-3 year break after releasing "Curious George."

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

I just saw Nine Inch Nails with Bauhaus and Peaches last week.

Peaches - never heard of her....Interesting. Great drummer, good guitar, not crazy about most of the songs, but they weren't terrible. She has power in her voice, but the songs/material didn't do anything for me.

Bauhaus - A classic. They were looking a little long in the tooth, but basically they still put on a very good show. The singer's vocals were still pretty solid; their guitar work still going strong. Bela Lugosi is Dead is a favorite of mine.

NIN - Impressive as expected. They had an interesting stage presentation with big screens in the back and a see through LED "screen" in front that added some interesting visual effects. With things moving on both, it gave the stage a 3D like effect at times. They rocked hard, with a lot of their heavier stuff. They threw in a LOT of older stuff too, something that I really enjoyed, being a long time fan. There was a good mix of all of the albums and even other stuff, such as Dead Souls from The Crow soundtrack (sung by the lead singer of Bauhaus). Overall, a very good show. Trent got a bit nostalgic on us when he paused and commented on the fact that it was the last show on the tour. "I just want to take it all in, this may be the last time I see a crowd like this for a while...we're going back into the studio."

Hey piggy...

Re: the summer 2006 concert season thread.

I saw the nin/bauhaus/peaches show in milwaukee on 7/2, Row 8 dead center. I'd agree with John on all accounts. the NIN stage show was impressive. They did Final Solution with peter murphy at my show. i'd have rather seen dead souls, but i'm not complaining. we also got get down make love which i've never seen them play out of the 8 or 9 times i've seen them now.

Saw Ministry the night before that. They sound real good. If your not put off by the first 40 minutes or so being off the newer albums and being very political, then its a show to see. and touring with revolting cocks, who were pretty good.

just saw an interesting psychobilly act for $5, sasquatch and the sick a billy's, that i was really impressed by. they are doing a 7 week national tour. check em out if you like that type of music.

Got Billy Idol and the Foo Fighters (acoustic)with Frank Black opening, coming up.

I saw them with Peter Frampton July 3rd. i was very underwhelmed by them, Frampton blew them off the stage. He had charisma and a good presence and was obviously having a good time. Skynyrd came out and most of the members seemed bored, including the lead singer. For a moment I thought it was Jack Black imitating the lead singer, yikes. I can't remember their names and I'm too lazy to go look them up, but the only two that were really good, was the piano player and the older long grey haired guitar player. The biggest let down for me with the show was the end solo for freebird was nearly a thrash guitar solo. "Let's see how fast we can get through the solo so I can improvise," was the feeling I got and Johnny Van Zant just walked off the stage as the solo started and never came back out.

Frampton gets 5 stars from me and Synyrd gets 1 1/2, more for the comedic factor, than anything else, constant reminders that "Skynyrd is in the house" (we were outside) was funny.

I'm going to see Jeff Beck in September that show should be interesting, I'm not overly familar with Jeff's work, but I know he was one of the big three guitarists out of England in the 60's and I've heard some of his stuff.

As for my other shows this year they are as follows:

Coldplay - April 3rd - 4 stars out of 5, just a great band, Chris Martin is fun live and Jonny Buckland is a great guitar player.

Lifehouse - May 3rd (I think) - 5 stars out of 5, a really great band, Jason Wade had fun with the crowd, all the songs had great energy, plus I was fairly close, only about 5 rows away.

Jars of Clay - April 15th (or so) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5, this was my 5th time seeing Jars of Clay, I love their music, they're great musicians, I did enjoy the show, but I was sick that night, and the guy that was on before them, Christopher Williams blew them away, he was funny and good. Jars was cool, I did get to meet them afterwards and go autographs and such.
