Marilyn Monroe 80th Anniversary Collection Question

Does anyone know if the "New" Marilyn Monroe 80th Anniversary DVD set is just the old discs repackaged or have they been remastered with new transfers?

I read somewhere (though I couldn't tell you where) they are the exact same transfers, just repackaged for this new collection.

The New York Times reports today they are "remastered", hence my confusion.

I doubt they are remastered as the ones in the Diamond Collections were remastered (there are before and after restoration clips as extras). I am satisfied with the ones I have.

i wonder if there are deleted scenes. i know for sure how to marry a millionaire and gentlemen prefer blondes have them and they weren't included in the diamond collections. i wonder why??

They are the same exact transfers. It's just another example of the groundbreaking expertise of Fox's marketing folks who are following the Sony/Uni mode of pointless regurgitation.

marilyn and jane had another musical number together that was cut. it's the number where they have the black/yellow floral ensembles on. you can see a clip of it in the original trailer

Almost evey film has scenes that are shot and not used. This does not mean the studio still has those scenes, and from what I know, Fox certainly does not have this stuff. They do have four numbers cut from No Biz Like Show Biz that have not been included.

I measured the old(er) R1 DVD as 2.53:1, I think that's accurate enough. (Assuming my cropping of the letterboxing is perfectly accurate)



Or are you suggesting that Fox took a roughly 2.35:1 transfer, then cropped it at the top and / or bottom to make it appear closer to a 2.55:1 O.A.R. transfer?

I am personally very happy with the quality of all the Monroe transfers, I do not think they need to be remastered. I understand that these films sell well, hence Fox has issued a new box.

The Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend number from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was also filmed in CinemaScope as a demonstration of the new process. I'm pretty sure it still survives (stereo?). That would be a great supplement.

i saw those 4 musical numbers on amc years back, but i don't know why they didn't include them on the dvd.

Sorry, Corey, but Fox was NOT good about keeping unused material. This is why we do not have the extra footage from King and I, Carousel, Sound of music, Dr. Dolittle, Sand Pebbles, etc.
BTW - the AMC specials showed only ONE cut number from NoBix, - anything you can dol - and no others from this film.

Does that mean this petition for the restoration of the original director's cut of The Sand Pebbles is a futile effort? i.e. that the negative of the additional footage was most likely junked, or not preserved as separations?

Thanks for that screen cap from RIVER OF NO RETURN. Reminds me that I need to revisit it very soon. Good film, and I love all of Marilyn's songs in the picture.

Just because the aspect ratio appears correct numerically doesn't mean that you are seeing the correct image. The AMC broadcast of River of No Return featured a 2.55:1 ratio that contained picture info on all four sides, leading one to believe that the dvd is incorrectly framed.

It is an amazing early CinemaScope film, I think Preminger was one of the best using the widescreen.

Yeah, I took into consideration that they may of taken a 2.35:1 image and just cropped the top and bottom.

It looks fine to me, I can't think of any shots where people appear cropped off the sides, which is what would occur if the image was improperly framed. But if anyone has any comparisons to the TV broadcast version, and the DVD, then I'd love to see it. Is there any old threads about this that someone can recall?

I have that same print on laserdisc. One notable moment is when Mark and Matt are shooting at the dead tree. On the dvd the tree is on the edge of the frame, on the laser the tree is in plain view with extra room to the right.

Are you able to capture the frames to a computer?

Here's two from the DVD:





Obviously these are a raw extraction of what is on the DVD, it doesn't necessarily mean the entire image will show on a TV.

Also, for the first composition, the camera is panning a bit, and only stops just before Mitchum fires the gun. So, I took the first capture at the point the camera stops panning. For the second the camera is more stable, so panning is less of an issue.

I did notice that there is a small band of black on the right hand side of the image - in other words the image is not tight to the frame of the DVD image. Obviously not ideal because it wastes a bit of resolution, but I've seen worse problems with DVD transfers.

Okay, I just figured it out.

But why isn't 'Bus Stop' included?

Is Fox gonna make us buy a second set as well... because that's one of the few MM titles that's actually really good and above the light typical fluff.

Does anyone have a list of the Fox Cinemascope titles that have not been prepared for letterbox release and/or broadcast? Offhand, I can't think of any still missing ("Prince Of Players" occurs to me as a possibility, but maybe it's been done as well) --- seems most everything has turned up on FMC by now. Anybody know of any titles still unaccounted for?

Unfortunately I'm having trouble seeing all the images at the same time, have we put too many images in a single thread?

I managed to see one of the laserdisc ones, and it looks like the anamorphic decompression is not accurate. The boy's head looks too thin. However, I also think the DVD image does appear cropped top and bottom.

At the moment I can see my DVD capture of Monroe. That one would be tricky to compare, because the camera tracks forwards somewhat, the camera was already moving forwards when I made my capture.

There was also a Merman/Dan Dailey " Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better"
that was cut from Show Biz. I believe in was included in a Merman documentary but I am not sure. It was odd as they were doing it as though it were a Spanish number.
