Suggestion for a new way to support HTF while also offering added value

A very popular forum, and perhaps one of the most popular forums for online driving simulator fans is GT Planet. They offer their forum members an optional premium membership, which for a small monthly fee (in this case $4), premium members get the following added features:
  • Option of turning off all advertising.
  • Their ID's on posts stand out.
  • A special ID that lets everyone know they are supporting the forum.
  • Can close and reopen their own threads (but obviously cannot override an action made by a admin/mod).
  • More attachment space for those uploading files they want to share.
  • Bigger avatars
  • Profile Pictures
  • Allows more Private Messages to be stored
  • Ability to change your user name.
  • Access to a private forum where only Premium members can participate.
It seems to be a very successful program for GT Planet, and I suspect there are a great number of HTF members who would be happy to support HTF while also getting some added features.

Just something you may want to consider implementing at some point, not necessarily with the exact same features, but something similar.

Re: Suggestion for a new way to support HTF while also offering added value

Nils,

First of all, thank you very much for starting a thread with
thoughts of supporting HTF. Parker and I appreciate it.

Parker and I have always debated the pros and cons of
adding a paid premium area to this forum.

Right now there is another forum out there (which I will not
name) that offers a premium area where members get more
priviliges including special hardware deals and premium message
areas.

The problem with paying for this kind of "club" is that the
Internet is full of other places where you can find the same
information for FREE. Special dealer deals are a nice plus,
but it's very easy to comparison shop across the net.

We just never felt that we could offer anything of premium
value to our membership that couldn't be found elsewhere.

You bring up some very interesting "perks" that we could
possibly offer under a premium membership, but the idea of
letting members turn off advertising is a scary prospect. That
advertising pays for running this forum and I would bet that
if these companies learned that we were not offering the
display of banners to our entire membership, there might be
some concern.

....besides people already use adblockers despite the fact we
ask them not to.

We realize that our members are happy to support us, but unless
we really can come up with something of value for them, we would
like to keep this forum FREE for everyone.

I will discuss some of your ideas with Parker who can better
evaluate what kind of modifications can be made to this software.

Thanks, Nils!

Re: Suggestion for a new way to support HTF while also offering added value

Excellent points and observations. I agree that added services that are easily available for free through alternative methods is rather pointless.

As for the effect on advertising revenue, is it possible to distinguish hits from premium members who choose to deactivate all advertising from all the other hits from members and visitors? If so, or even a reasonable estimate should be enough to validate to advertisers on the value of advertising on HTF.

However, if the fees for premium memberships when added to the advertising revenue do not generate MORE income than when there were no premium memberships (in other words if you lose more money from lost advertising then you raise from premium membership fees) then obviously it would be a bad idea.

Without actually knowing and thus running the numbers, I still feel this premium membership option could really benefit HTF.

I suspect there are many members here who absolutely feel HTF is a real value to them, but also never use advertising banners to shop, thus aren't really helping HTF out in regards in advising revenue.

I know that in the past you occasionally hold fund raisers, asking members to voluntarily send HTF a donation which I also think is a great idea, but the message isn't always easily received, and while many wont want to admit it, people in general want to be recognized for lending a hand.

I've been involved in many charitable events, and as an organizer I've always found that we were able to generate far more charitable revenue when we offered special services and an opportunity to identify each donor.

I suspect that even if you didn't offer ANY additional services or perks to "premium members", there would still be many members who would still sign up because they want to help, and would want others to know they helped so that it encourages others to also help. It isn’t an ego thing as much as it is a way of letting others know that the option to help is there, and that others have chosen to do so.

After all, what you, Parker, and the HTF family have done to make HTF into the site, resource, and community that it is today is absolutely amazing. Yet we all know this comes at a great cost in both time and money, and while advertising money may be keeping your heads above water now, one can't help but wonder for how long.

As more and more advertising revenue becomes necessary; or when advertising budgets and options change such that advertisers are no longer willing to pay for just banner ads; or pay as much for their current advertising; or worse yet – put pressure on HTF to allow them to use the forums to promote their products, and to censure those that say anything negative about their products – you’ll be left with some very difficult decisions to make.

I have a great deal of confidence in the loyalty of your members, and that if given the chance to participate in some kind of premium membership that will help HTF generate more income and be less dependent on advertising, many members will want to help.

This would obviously be a big decision, as there would be a good deal of work involved in putting it together and working out all the logistics, but my gut instinct is that this could be a really beneficial thing for the future financial stability for HTF. This in turn would assure that HTF for years to come would continue to be a safe haven for HT enthusiasts to discus technology, products, ideas, and opinions without ever worrying about advertisers effecting the flow of information on the forums as has occurred in so many other forums at other sites.

I consider HTF one of the best run, most valuable resource on the net, with a community that for the most part is free to discuss most topics without fear of being unfairly censored or attacked. If this were to ever change I personally would moron the loss, and I feel many others share a similar sentiment.

We are here to help any way we can. Just give us the opportunity.

Re: Suggestion for a new way to support HTF while also offering added value

Nils,

Thank You again.

There was a time when we depended on member support
to help keep this forum functioning. For the two consecutive
years we ran a donation campaign, members really came
through for us with flying colors. It was greatly appreciated.

We don't run such campaigns anymore because quite frankly,
the advertising revenue at this point and time is supporting
the costs of running this forum. Parker and I aren't getting
rich from this site -- we can't even afford to quit our day jobs
to devote ourselves to this forum 24/7 -- but that's not something
we look to our membership to supplement.

At this time, we just don't agree that there needs to be private
areas exclusively for paying members. What could we offer?!
To remove advertising banners for a sect of the paying membership
would not go over well with the companies that support this forum.
Visibility is the most important factor for our advertisers, and I am
not certain that payments we receive from members would offset
that. If advertising can't be delivered to everyone, I think
the companies are going to go elsewhere.

Listen, advertising is the fact of life when it comes to getting
something for FREE. We want to keep HTF a FREE forum and all
we ask in return for it is that people support our advertisers
(when was the last time any of you clicked on a banner or
purchased from our vendor) and NOT use adblockers.

Honestly, for me, I don't even notice the advertising anymore
unless I notice something new. Those familiar with the forum
immediately have their eyes directed to content. After a while
the rest of the advertising simply becomes surrounding framework.

I promise we will continue to keep your idea in our minds. In
the meantime, if our members wish to support this forum,
please click on banners and make your purchases through our
vendors who are highly reputable. Please do not use
adblocker software
.
