NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO" - Page 3

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

I listened to the show where Howard Stern said "I wish I could go back to FM and beat them" and it was said entirely in jest. What Stern meant, and was clear to anyone listening at the time, was that it would be sweet just to show how dominant he is over O&A by crushing him in any market where they both perform.

Also, about Stern lying about being offered positions by 3 terrestrial radio companies, he challenged anyone who didn't believe him to put up $10 million and he would announce the names of the stations whom offered him contracts. If he was lying, he would pay up $10 million on his end.

I don't listen to O&A, and I don't think bickering (if it exists) is a big deal one way or another. But I do think making up things that aren't true is stupid, and doesn't make for good radio.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

Will, I have tried to listen to OnA when they were on here in Philly, just didnt find them as funny as their fans did. As I posted in the XM forums I have also tried them once again on Free FM and I will tune them in every now and then, but so far I haven't heard anything new... Gay Chicken & some rant on Howard.

Just because I enjoy Howard, doesnt mean I cant enjoy another radio show. I listen to the NFL shows on Sirius more then I do Howard. I will listen to what ever I find to be the most enjoyable for me. Just like with DLR, Opie and Anthony havent done a thing so far on Free FM to make me tune them in and tune out Stern.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

Despite any pronouncements to the contrary, would any Howard Stern fan be surprised if he did end up striking a deal to bring him back in syndication to FM radio?

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

from howardstern.com "Howard acknowledged he'd like the chance to beat CBS in the ratings on terrestrial radio , but he's not interested in changing his working routine." thursday may , 4. if he were to go back there , it's only to kick the ass of. CBS

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

I'd be highly surprised to ever see Howard Stern back on terrestrial radio, for a variety of reasons.

1) He would feel like he was cheating the people who subscribed to satellite radio to hear him exclusively.

2) He left terrestrial radio to get away from the censorships he felt were stupid and unfair.

3) He wants to be a part of what he thinks is going to be the future of radio, and that is the entire satellite medium.

The thing with O&A, I think, is you have to listen for awhile before you start to "get" the show and their humor. You might not think they do anything for you if you only listen very intermittently. I don't know how much time you invested in the show, but if it wasn't much, I could see how it did not make an impression on you. They can also be hit or miss with some of the stuff they do. Their show is not nearly as "produced" as Howard's show.

Nope, not at all. Money talks. However, all the delusional, out of context quotes and spin in the press and on O&A's show is reporting that he said he wants to go back, and he has not said that at all. O&A, for some reeason, need Howard. Maybe they are defensive over the fact they were never able to go head to head with him. Maybe they actually long for the battle that Howard deprived them of when they started picking on his family. I don't know, but you know the old saying - Be careful what you wish for.

And this makes for good radio how?

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

...and let us not forget...

SIRIUS was courting Opie and Anthony even before
they approached Howard Stern.

Opie and Anthony were very close to signing with
Sirius radio. Sirius radio wanted them badly. In fact,
that was around the time I was at Sirius studios and
management was pretty damn excited (in a hush-hush
way) that the Opie and Anthony deal was close to
being signed.

Opie and Anthony decided not to go with Sirius radio
at the time because the boys felt that the company
was too far behind in its technology. O&A then went
to talk to XM radio....and the rest is history.

There has always been speculation that O&A were
the FIRST choice to bring aboard because they were
controversial, and, available (Howard was still under
contract). Sirius knew that they could have gotten
O&A at a far better deal than the amount they would
have to spend to lure Howard Stern aboard....

....of course, history has proved that the investment
Sirius made on Stern has mostly paid off -- though not
entirely. Bringing Stern aboard essentially saved the
company that without him, would probably be in bad
shape right now. It was a good investment in the fact
that it brought brand recognition to Sirius and for the
very first time, real competition for XM.

Still, both companies are not doing well by any means.
Both companies are still in the red because of these
mega-million dollar deals. Stocks are at an all-time low.
Personally, seeing what is happening with the sound
quality of XM I am somewhat concerned for that service
and satellite radio in general. The more I browse the
message boards these days the more I read about long-time
subscribers threatening to leave because these services
have jammed their available bandwidth with so much content
that sound quality has gone down the crapper.

I'm happy that we can continue to debate and talk about
these two services without the personal attacks that I see
happening on other sites.

Come on, now. They are on for 5+ hours a day, 5 days a week. Not every minute of their show is going to be "Gold" That goes for Howard as well. By Howard's own admission he had not been able to do "good radio" for the past 10 years before he got to Sirius (which, to me, sounds like making excuses for himself. You don't hear O&A, at the exact same station, under the exact same management complaining how they can't do a good show, and don't bother to retort with "That's because they never did a good show in the first place!")

It's been heavilly theorized by O&A that Mel Karmazin made Howard insist on the air that he has no intention of going back to terrestrial to control the drop in the stock price. Doesn't make it true, but it does not seem all that unlikely either.

Hey, you are the one making the excuse that O&A have to be listened to for a while before someone "gets it", not me. I could care less when or if someone "gets" Howard, his numbers speak for themselves.

So Mel makes Howard insist that he has not intention of going back in order to keep the stock up (according to O&A ), but the deal that O&A took was a good one for XM? Sounds like they are talking out of both sides of their mouths. Which leads me to the very worst thing about O&A. They spend way too much time psychoanalyzing a person who has been a relatively open and shallow book. Howard pretty much lets it all hang out on his show. He is what he is. Why spend all this time looking for the hidden motives and subconscious reasoning of a person who admits he has the mind of a 4th grader? They make Howard out to be way more than he is: a guy who is a genius at dick and fart jokes, no more.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

the o&a deal was great for them not xm because satellite needs exclusive content and variety to survive like you would never hear a NFL channel on old radio. sure u have all sports radio but they talk about local teams and stuff not just one sport all the time.there is a sense that o&a wants to go to old radio to be #1 were stern has been for years.thats great for them but not for XM.stern on the other hand has been there and done that now he is more energized on SIRIUS.when he gets into a conversation now he doesn't have to ask fred if he needs to take a break. thats another thing that stern hated about old boring radio.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

Ron, I just read your reply about Howard lying about 3 radio companies contacting him. If you knew anything about Howard, he doesn't lie. If I'm proven wrong, please state the lies and the evidence.

I'm not trying to make this a Stern vs 0&a, but your bias toward Sirius is obvious and it is clearly noticed in your replies. I respect your opinions on matters to do with home theater and the like, but your obvious dislike of Sirius, because of your "supposedly" bad treatment by them, makes me wonder what your real motives are.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

Dave,

...and I wonder what your motives are.

You go into the XM area about two weeks ago and
post this message

I think you got the response you deserved in that thread, and no
doubt there are many of us that feel you either work for Sirius or have
certain motives that you bring to the table.

Then there is this post with language that makes you come across
as an obnoxious 2-year-old who cannot debate an issue on an adult
level. Consider this a warning that the next post you make like that
one will get you removed from this forum. It has NOTHING to do with
your opinion but rather how you express it. Personally, I'd be ashamed
of that post.

While there is no argument I am no fan of Sirius, that has nothing
to do with my opinion of Howard Stern. My mind was made up about
Stern long before Sirius came into the picture. Anyone who is a true
fan of O&A has heard the Stern stories and I have my own beliefs on
their validity.

LOL, the show was great this week. I couldnt be happier with it and I cant even imagine it on regular radio.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

I listened this week off and on. What I did catch - involving setting up a post-op transexual with a heroin addict had me laughing so hard I almost wrecked my car.

I take it there was some impersonation going on with the fake voice for this character, which made it all the better. I have no idea how you would do that on regular radio. The dialog alone would be almost a continuous (BLEEP!)

That's the genius that is Fred Norris. Fred's high pitched Siobhon voice that sinks to a Herman Munster baritone for the last word of every sentence was hysterical. The fact the "man with an open wound where his penis used to be" was being picky about the heroin addict's looks was amazing.

This week was great between the Siobahn saga, Jeff the Vomit Guy, Miss Howard Stern, Elegant Elliot, Riley Martin ,etc. The show is better than its ever been!!! Now that CBS is willing to let him play the classic shows (for a fee) it can only get better.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

The "I can't even afford the MF'in parking and tunnels" bit with Riley Martin had me rolling the other day. Riley agrees to do a show for $200 a pop, then immediately wants more money. Howard's reply - "Sell some of your F'in symbols." Riley going on about the "Cheap Jew" and his "House N%^^a" Robin and how they only got "255 days to go" was priceless.

I even enjoyed the Dixie Chicks interview. Anytime he can get Natalie Maines to admit she doesn't wear panties and talk to Wendy the Retard is pure radio gold.

"Wendy, I love you but you have to slow down on the drinking".

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

sals apology and hearing crackhead bob again just make it better and better.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

The interview with the Chicks was great. I have never listed to Stern before, but after last week, I'm hooked. This week was really solid. I really enjoyed the Chicks interview and the fact that they could go almost an hour without a break and really just cover everything they wanted to address.

I couldn't deal with the girl who eats vomit, but the Miss Howard Stern segment, damn was that messed up. Primarily because it led to that statement by Sal and then probably the worst apology I have ever heard the whole "White women don't normally sleep with black men" as part of an apology for being racist.. Yeesh! But the Riley Martin song mixes get me. Crazy Alice doing the "Bad Day" song, and almost all of the Riley Martin song mixes, spefically "Witch Doctor" and "My Name Is" get me every time. I wish they had a longform download of either.

Re: NY Post - "STERN EYES FREE RADIO"

That "Miss Howard Stern" segment was even better on HowardTV. You can see how out of control she was.

"Hi, I'm Sal Governale..." - the phoney-phone call that Richard made with Sal's tape was killer.
