Re: Fox announce 'The Clark Gable Collection Volume 1' in August
I just want to show FOX some love and say... they've really improved. I mean, Warner Bros definitely owns more truly excellent *classic* movies, and their prices are better... but... I'm actually enjoying FOX's presentation lately...*more* than Warner's! I know, blasphemy. But when I open up a Warner dvd and see ...no insert...and often, not even full-colour disc art... and then I open up a FOX dvd and there's a booklet with an informative essay, and 4 lobby cards... I get excited.

I'm not even a huge Betty Grable fan (well, I haven't seen her in anything except Pigskin Parade) but I bought that box, partly 'cause the packaging was just so tempting. I'm a sucker for purty artwork and extras. Love, love, love lobby cards!
So, bravo FOX for not only emulating Warner's treatment of classic films, but for going that extra distance and even being a little bit better. In some respects. For the moment. If you look at it a certain way.
Don't kill me.
P.S. I also love the fact that the FOX execs didn't go, "oh we won't bother releasing these Clark Gable movies because they're not considered his BEST or most famous...so they probably wouldn't make enough money, so forget it". They released 'em anyway. Whereas Warner seems to have this attitude of being, well, too picky. I get the impression they dismiss a lot of titles, 'cause they're a little more obscure. Maybe that's the downside to them owning such a huuuuuuge movie library. Studios like FOX are more likely to release b-movie musicals. And I like that. I wanna see them all. And I think just about every film deserves to be preserved on DVD instead of deteriorating and going unseen by future generations. But I despair of Warner plumbing the depths of their vaults... I hope I'm wrong.
But seriously, would they have released "Daddy Long Legs" if they owned it instead of FOX? More likely it would be ignored like the less successful/more obscure Fred Astaire movies they *do* own ("Yolanda & The Thief", etc)
Now you're gonna tell me to be patient. Okay, I'll try.

But I hate waiting years and years for movies to make it to DVD. Although I appreciate it takes time to restore and whatnot.
