FWIW, I am running Mac OS 10.4.6 and the latest Safari and have not gotten any of those error messages.

That's because Parker fixed the problem about 30
minutes prior to your post.

I have a feeling it's not a software feature anymore, since other forums like AVS and DVDTalk have the same kind of email notification.

That's the biggest problem with this new version of vBulletin
is that you cannot alter it so that you can have a lifetime
subscription to thread replies without visiting the forum after
each reply.

It's a pain-in-the-ass and I hope it's a problem addressed in
a future upgrade of the software.

Cameron:

Does DVD Talk and AVS have the option to be sent an email with each subscribed thread or not?

What happened to "First New Post"?

Instead of recieving emails on new posts, I got used to checking the forums for the "First New Post" link. That was also helpful in going right to the page where I had last left off.

Can I still use this method? How do I visit a thread where I last left off?

Also, I liked how my old "User Control" panel would only show subscribed threads that had new posts. Now my UCP doesn't show these.

How can I go back to the old way of browsing? This new way seems clunkier and more time consuming...and I feel that I am missing on updated threads that I don't realize have new posts.

????

EDIT: I see that this thread shows up in my UCP.

Wait a second. There was a "High Definition [hardware] Area" this morning, with HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and Display divisions, but it's gone now!

Their subscription systems are the same - it emails the new post since a user's last visit but no further until you visit the site again. It has the same language in the emails of "There may be other replies also, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the forum again."

the email link wont get there.

TonyD, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

The "first new post" text link has been replaced by the little blue "down" arrow to the left of the thread title. It works the same as the prior function.

I don't know all the specifics of subscribed threads, but I don't think the new software eliminated any of the old options, they just may be located in a slightly different place. Just take some time to go through the User CP pages. There seem to be more of them than before, so I'm sure all the old settings are in there somewhere, plus many more.

Not sure what you mean by the "old" way? Is your display set to "linear display" rather than "thread display"? Linear presents the posts in the format we're used to from the old software. When the forum came back up, "thread" view was the default. That was the first thing I had to change.

And threads with new posts appear in boldface type at the top of the list in each forum. Threads that do not have any new posts since your last visit are in regular (non-bold) typeface.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Is it possible to have "Forum Jump" boxes at the top AND bottom of the page, like in the prior format?

Thx!

oh, I guess my problem is that all of my subscriptions are gone (I assume they were lost with the database crash). I guess that's why I don't see any "First New Post" icons next to my previous subscribed threads.

I thought the new update got rid of the "First New Post" thing. I do all of my reading this way, so it would have sucked if I couldn't use this function now.

I'll be on the lookout for that blue arrow once I start posting more.

Re: What happened to "First New Post"?

Mark: there is a little blue "down" arrow just to the left of each of the threads which have a "first new post" for you. Just click on that arrow and you'll be taken right to the "first new post".

Took me a while to find that!

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Now I see the blue arrows. Thanks guys

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

When I click on the Blue Arrows nothing happens. Of course it could be that I'm using IE 7. I'll go to a computer that has IE 6 to see if that changes things.

Whats with the red squares?

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

have you clicked the red square?

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Yeah, something about a favorite, but I'm not getting it.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

The red square will add the post to your list of favorites. In the pull down menu "Thread Tools" you have the option to add a thread to your favorites. If you have a particular person that you want to have in a favorite list you can click on their username in a post, view their profile and then add them to you favorite list. You favorites with show up under "Favorites" in the navigational toolbar.

I will change the icons around with the light bulb, etc. as before.

I will also move the forumjump up to the top of the page too.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Oh, I almost forgot. Now if you subscribe to a thread and you click on the "instant notification by email" you will get an email each time someone responds to a thread you are following with the contents of the post in the email.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

The Hi-Def areas were trial areas and we will be adding them soon. That is why you can no longer see then.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Parker: You are doing great things, my man! Thanks!

Are you planning on restoring our ability to select certain sub-forums as "favorites" so that when we are logged in and go to the index page we see only those forums that we visit often? I hae a really hard time sifting through all the sub-forum listing on the index page now.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

I have a link directly to the old forum of DVD software in my bookmarks, and it still has the "we've horribly crashed" message. By luck I went to HTF's homepage and realized it was back up. You should redirect those "we're sorry" pages to HTF.com so people know you're up... I'm probably not the only one who linked directly to a forum.

Thanks for the lightbulb thing, Parker. And, thanks for all the hard work you're doing on your own time. Yeoman's effort.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

If these Hi-Def areas were only a trial, why are the Mods still actively moving threads to them, so that nobody can read them?

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

What is the software (and version) of these new boards? Is there a site with user manuals (on navigating the boards) so I don't have to keep bugging everyone when I want to figure out how to do something?

Like, how do I subscribe to threads (without posting in them)?

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

I love the new software but I would like to have two more features:

1. Ability to add an avatar.
2. Have everyone's post count turned on. I think it is valuable in giving one an idea of experience on the board.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Lee, there's an "Edit Profile Picture" link in the User Control Panel. I assume this is the avatar.

Lee, the only problem we have with posts counts is the
handful of members that abused it.

Members were posting frivolous messages just so they
could increase their post count and brag about it.

That is the reason why we decided to remove the counts.

Re: Report all forum software problems in this thread ONLY. Thank You!

Not sure this is the best place to ask but here goes: The authors of threads have the ability to edit the content of their thread, however, only moderators can change the Title of the thread. I sometimes misspell a word in a thread Title, it would be nice to be able to correct these misspellings.

I would at least like to know the reason the thread starter cannot edit the thread Title.

Thanks

PS I hope Parker gets some sleep soon. Kind of a double whammy. First, (according to him), whopping tax bill to the IRS, then database crash. You guys are the best.
