Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

Amazon delivered it yesterday. I've only listened to the first CD, but I already like it immensely. I do feel that TTT is a very strong soundtrack, so I have high expectations for the remainder. Only a year long wait for ROTK:CR now. But 6 CD's full of LOTR music is a beautiful thing to tide me over.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

With so much of my attention and WALLET going for HD-DVDs the past several months, I kind of forgot about this being just released. LOVED FOTR-CR so this one will be in my collection soon. I'm going to give some extremely pointed hints for Christmas.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

Hi...looking for some advice. Here's my problem....

I bought the Limited Editions and they skip like an SOB on my cheapo RCA DRC233N. With Fellowship I couldn't start the movie properly, it just played the Logo (in full screen) over and over. I used Scene select and started it that way. The skips were just little moments, but it was constant and annoying. It played perfectly on my PC (with a Sony burner bought a few years ago). TTT froze at 90 minutes on side one, then restarted okay on the PC. On Side 2 it froze my PC which required a hard reboot. I had to shut it down and unplug/replug in the hard drive. WTF? A test using Western Digital's utility told me the HD was fine. I moved to the RCA and it froze at the same places but restarted okay (layer switch locked up my PC?) I was able to watch the movie to conclusion. The small skipping remained though. So far, Return of the King just has the small skips (only about an hour in). I'm guessing the cheap RCA has to go. Do these symptoms sound like it's the player? It should be known that MOST other DVDs run fine on my 2 methods here. DVD-18 is always a problem on the RCA and sometimes on the PC as well (the Univ Hammer set).

Btw, Fellowship had scuff marks so I'll be exchanging it. TTT seemed to have small scratches and plus the freezing thing on side 2 so it goes back. I'll probably end up keeping RotK. I wish I'd bought the first EE releases instead. But I figured I could get these and give the old TCs to a family member. Lesson learned.

I guess what I really need are some facts about DVD-18. I was looking at a good OPPO brand DVD player.... http://www.oppodigital.com/ I'm hoping that's the answer to my problems. Plus the all region and PAL to NTSC sounds like a winner. What do you think?

That's a lot. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

I finally got around to ordering the complete FOTR and TTT recordings the other week, and they arrived yesterday. They really are seriously great, and I'm loving listening to them.

Also, the annotated score is available for download at the official site.

I have to say, when I first downloaded it, I was quite disappointed. When i read "annotated score", I thought we were getting the actual score, all the musical notation. I was astonished at the thought that they would release that for free, but still, that's what it sounded like.
Then I downloaded it, and realised it was just an analysis of each track. It's very good, and I'm glad to have it (and it's a nice companion to the theme-by-theme analysis in the booklets) but I was still a little disappointed.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

My copy of the TTT score arrived late last week. Suffice it to say, it makes a wonderful addition to FOTR score. As I love the Rohan themes, this set is immensely listenable. Wonderful just wonderful.

Even though my Toshiba HD A1 does not do DVD-A, it is a masterful CD player and really adds audible nuances to music.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

Had to do some driving today (about 4 hours worth)...and popped in some Fellowship of the Ring music. Once again I'm reminded how rich the score was and remains. The music is a masterpiece as are the scores for TTT & ROTK.

I never seem to tire of Concerning Hobbits or Many Meetings.

I don't own the Complete Recordings yet for TTT but hope to soon. Any word on ROTK?

The great scores in Cinema really do transport us back to those screen specific moments & the Fellowship's score certainly belongs in that group. With each track today I really could see the film before my eyes....and of course the road I was traveling on too.

Greatness.

ROTK is due out by November I believe. I have yet to tire of listening to these soundtracks as well. So rich and deep.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

I've been so busy with the new baby I forgot to post that I attended the Lord of the Rings Symphony in St. Petersburg last week. I really enjoyed it, and even got chills when the performance began, as it had been a few months since I heard the music.

Adam Tolkien on The Children of Húrin

How did a lifetime of stories become The Children of Húrin? In an essay on the making of the book, Adam Tolkien, grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien (and French translator of his History of Middle-earth), explains that the Húrin legends made up the third "Great Tale" of his grandfather's Middle-earth writing, and he describes how his father, Christopher Tolkien, painstakingly collected the pieces of the legend into a complete story told only in the words of J.R.R. Tolkien. "For anyone who has read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings," he writes, The Children of Húrin "allows them to take a step back into a larger world, an ancient land of heroes and vagabonds, honour and jeopardy, hope and tragedy."

A Look Inside the Book

This first edition of The Children of Húrin is illustrated by Alan Lee, who was already well-known for his Tolkien illustrations in previous editions (see our Tolkien Store for more) as well as his classic collaboration with Brian Froud, Faeries, and his Kate Greenaway Medal-winning Black Ships Before Troy, before his Oscar-winning work as conceptual designer for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy brought him even greater acclaim. Here's a quick glimpse of two of Lee's interior illustrations for The Children of Húrin. (Click on each to see larger images.)

Q & A with Amazon & Alan Lee...

Quote:
Amazon.com: How much of a treat was it to get first crack at depicting entirely new characters rather than ones who had been interpreted many times before? Was there one who particularly captured your imagination?

Lee: Although it was a great honor to illustrate The Children of Húrin, the characters and the main elements of the story line are familiar to those who have read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, and these narratives have inspired quite a few illustrators. Ted Nasmith has illustrated The Silmarillion and touched on some of the same characters and landscapes. This was the first time that I ventured into the First Age; while working on The Lord of the Rings books and films--and The Hobbit--I've had to refer back to events in Middle-earth history but not really depict them.

I'm drawn to characters who bear similarities to the protagonists in myths and legends; these correspondences add layers and shades of meaning, and most of the characters in this story have those archetypal qualities. However, I prefer not to get too close to the characters because the author is delineating them much more carefully than I can, and I'm wary of interfering with the pictures that the text is creating in the reader's mind.

Amazon.com: The Húrin story has been described as darker than some of Tolkien's other work. What mood did you try to set with your illustrations?

Lee: It is a tragic story, but the darkness is offset by the light and beauty of Tolkien's elegiac writing. In the illustrations I tried to show some of the fragile beauty of the landscapes and create an atmosphere that would enhance the sense of foreboding and impending loss. I try to get the setting to tell its part in the story, as evidence of what happened there in the past and as a hint at what is going to occur. My usual scarred and broken trees came in handy.

Amazon.com: You were a conceptual designer (and won an Oscar) for Peter Jackson's film trilogy of The Lord of the Rings, which I think we can safely say had a bit of success. How does designing for the screen compare to designing for the page?

Lee: They both have their share of joys and frustrations. It was great to be part of a huge film collaboration and play a small part in something quite magical and monumental; I will always treasure that experience. Film is attractive because I enjoy sketching and coming up with ideas more than producing highly finished artwork, and it's great having several hundred other people lending a hand! But books--as long as they don't get moldy from being left in an empty studio for six years--have their own special quality. I hope that I can continue doing both.

Amazon.com: Of all fiction genres, fantasy seems to have the strongest tradition of illustration. Why do you think that is? Who are some of your favorite illustrators?

Lee: A lot of excellent illustrators are working at the moment--especially in fantasy and children's books. It is exciting also to see graphic artists such as Dave McKean, in his film Mirrormask, moving between different media. I also greatly admire the more traditional work of Gennady Spirin and Roberto Innocenti. Kinuko Craft, John Jude Palencar, John Howe, Charles Vess, Brian Froud ... I'll stop there, as the list would get too long. But--in a fit of pride and justified nepotism--I'll add my daughter, Virginia Lee, to the list. Her first illustrated children's book, The Frog Bride [coming out in the U.K. in September], will be lovely.

What's up? It's that time of year again...a momentous occasion for the film score lovers among us:

Howard Shore’s complete Oscar-winning score for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, from the epic film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, will be available in a deluxe five-disc edition from Reprise/WMG Soundtracks on November 6, 2007.
Per Dan Brecher, score genius, there will be another release next year of the rarities around the same time as Doug Adams long-promised and long-awaited book on the scores is released.

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy Discussion Thread

The ROTK Complete Recordings set has been delayed a week to November13. Here is the latest post from Doug Adams, who is currently finalizing the annotated score notes:

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the lack of updates… I’ve been traveling a lot lately. And, in fact, I’m heading out again tonight, so I’ll have to be brief.

Yes, I can confirm the ROTK delay. It is not related to rescheduling, legal issues or anything of that sort. The delay pertains strictly to the creation of the physical product which, because of the additional CD and the double-sided DVD in this set, has become a bit more involved than in the past.

No cause for alarm, though I certainly understand your frustrations.

The Annotated Score is its final edits now… I hope it’ll answer your questions regarding unused material, etc. Oh, and FYI, the sequencing on the album represents the film’s structure at the time Shore scored it (save for Sissel’s piece). So when questions arise regarding “why is scene X before scene Y on this album…” it’s because that’s how the film was originally edited and that’s how it was scored.

Ok, I’m late! Gotta run! Yay, airports!

For those who never experienced Trilogy Tuesday, you may get your chance to experience it this time if you live in or near Canada at The Great Digital Film Festival:

http://www.cineplex.com/Events/DigitalFilmFest/Home.aspx

It'll be showing on Saturday, Feb. 5th 2011

Trilogy Tuesday was probably my best experience at a movie theater.  I don't think it will be the same as these are probably just the theatrical cuts but I'll be there just the same.

Fans awaiting this epic game will find current news, a rich community and more at www.WarInTheNorth.com.

So, I dug this thread up to reminisce a bit.  Ten years ago, I was in a mild state of euphoria.  FOTR was my first midnight movie, and it was a corker.  More than any other film, FOTR cemented my love of online film discussion.  I had just joined HTF a few months before, and I never really perused Sam's "Lucas had better look out" thread which ran through most of 2001.  I remember the teaser from early 2001 ("You will find adventure.  Or adventure will find you.") and the main trailer which premiered with some episode of Angel.  Anyways, while it kicked the decade off, I still think it is the film series which most defines the entire previous decade.  I think that is saying quite a bit, as the Pirates films, Batman films, Pixar, Star Wars films, and superhero movies also dominated the mainstream business in the oughts.

I distinctly recall the rapturous reviews that Fellowship got, and how that fed the excitement.  There was also the promise of two more Decembers of such films.  It honestly felt like the whole of Middle Earth, fully realized and rich, opened up.  I still think of LOTR every December.

My favorite scene remains Gandalf's fall, with Boromir's last stand right behind it.  And FOTR remains my favorite of the three films, EE or otherwise.

And we are a day away from the first teaser for The Hobbit.

Ten years ago, I was sitting in a theater, and five minutes into the movie, as Cate Blancett's narration played over images of Sauron and the ring, my friend turned to me and said "It's already great."
