It's time for another Austin meet!!!!!

Hold your breath everyone, it's time for an AUSTIN HTF GET TOGETHER!!! It's been ages since we've had a meet, so gosh darnit, it's about time!

Humphrey and I are going to do a comparison of the AE900 and CRT next Saturday, the 25th, at 7:30 at my place. He also suggested Jay might be interested in bringing over his AE700 to do an old model vs current model comparison. And, if we have time we'll watch a movie after the demos. If anyone wants to bring other projectors to add to the mix, please feel free, the more the merrier.

I'll be there. Any chance you guys will have filters on hand? I'd like to see what help an ND filter would have on my old Sharp.

Count me in.
Of course I'll be there.

Equipment I'll be bringing:
  • Panny AE900
  • Oppo Digital Upscaling DVI DVD Player
  • 15' DVI -> HDMI cable (monoPrice)
I have a 10' DVI->DVI cable as well. Speak up if I need to bring it as well.

Chad will you bring your 81C filter? I'd love to see any differences it makes.

I paid for 2-day shipping, so I should have it in time.

I will be there with my Mits HC3000U. Do I need to bring my Oppo DVD player? Anyone going to be there that is a whiz at calibration? I have AVIA and the GetGrey disk. Should have Hoya 77mm multicoated filter by then as well.

Also will need contact info and directions.

Which filter is that?

I'll be there with my AE700. Looking forward to see the differences in the upgrade.

Bob,
Welcome to the Austin HT forum!

Bob: Welcome to the Austin group of crazies.

I'll try to make it (daughter and her fiance will be here - maybe I'll drag 'em along).

Jonathan, can we bring any food or drinks?
I'd like to come. I could bring my ND2 filter. I don't think I need to bring my 4805 but I could if there's interest. I can dig up some HD content if we need some of those to play, presumably off of Jonathan's HTPC.

Chad,

Feel free to bring whatever snacks and/or drinks you'd like. Except for beer. We have a ban on the smell of beer here. Any other alcohol is fine, just not beer.

James,

The ND2 filter would be a fun comparison against Chad's 81C. People can see the effects of cutting light output vs color correcting.

Is the ND2 a 77MM? That's what the Panny uses. I'd like to see what difference it might make. Last night looking at the black levels on the new Panny I was very happy. Would be interesting to see if it could get better but I know it'll be a challenge.
The ND2 is a Hoya 62mm. If anything, we could hold it over the panny's lens. I'm at 1700 hours on the 4805 and I still got the filter on, it still seems too bright without it.

A DVI->DVI cable would be helpful for my Sharp projector. It takes DVI only, or I also have a VGA->DVI adapter (I use component video->VGA->DVI on my setup).
I have a DVI-DVI cable I can bring if that means you are bringing your Sharp Mark. Also DVI to HDMI cable and a few misc adapters.
That would be very helpful Humphrey. Also I can bring my screen (Dalite Insta-theater) if anyone wants. It's a little wavy like any roll-up non-tensioned screen, but it's not too bad and actually looks pretty good for a gain screen.
Doc, if you like I could bring over one of the 8300HD DVR's?

Also, are there any additional DVDs you might like me to bring along?

Hey guys long time no talk. I've been checking the forum off and on but my life has been quiet wild the last couple of years. I can't make it tonight but I do have a topic for you guys to talk about. First off my Mom has sold her house out at Barton Creek, and I have some equipment that needs a good home. I have a row of 4 and a row of 3 Cinelounger chairs for sale. Also a Runco DTV-882 CRT projector, a Pioneer Elite LD/DVD player and a Pioneer LD/CD player. Last a full Meridian Digital Theater sound system. 4 DSP5000 speakers, a DSP5000c center and 565/562V pre/pro combo.
The chairs need to go fairly quick since the closing is mid April, The rest of the equipment is at my house. I hope to get back to seeing you nuts more often starting this summer.

Later
Greg

Thanks everyone for coming over last night, hope you all had a good, albeit somewhat academic, time last night. I really appreciate being able to demo future purchases in my own theater.

The AE900 is a great deal. I think if I didn't already have a projector, that would be a no brainer at $1500.

However, since I do have the CRT to tide me over, I think I'll wait till the Mitsu or new InFocus drop below $2000 and go that route. From where I was sitting, I saw just enough difference in black level, sharpness, and colors to make it worth a little extra to me. Of course if the Panny prices continues to fall and hits $1100ish by the time the Mitsu is $1900, then I may eat those words. Mainly, I worry about the luck of the draw on LCD projectors--you could get a perfect one, or you could end up with bad VB and misaligned panels. It looked to me like Ken got a pretty good unit, though, so maybe there's really nothing to worry about.

And for everyone who didn't make it, you missed out on Pelan's awesome chocolate raspberry THX certified cake. So think about that for next time!

Greg,

Put that Meridian system on Audiogon, it'll go in no time flat. I always liked that combination of components.

The meet was great. Jonathan and Jen's theater remodel looks awesome.

Greg I'm interested in the Cinelounger seats. Need pictures..... Left you voice mail. And actually have a trailer at the house for the next day or so...

Today, Jay and I picked up and installed Chads old screen in my place. The screen replaced my blindingly too bright SharpVision one. Thanks Chad. Wound up being the max size my theater can even support. I have about 1.5" on either side where the masking just isn't quite close enough. More than acceptable and leaps ahead of what I was using. Time to go tweek a little and watch some.

Jonathan and Jenn,
Thanks for hosting the meet Saturday. I was glad to get a chance to compare my AE700 with the AE900. The 900 looks good, but the difference is not enough to get me to cough up the ~$500 upgrade cost.

Greg,
We've never met, but it appears you were with the Austin HTF group when they were a little wilder. I'd show you my nuts, but you'd have to promise not to tell my wife. [She hides them from me 'cause I eat all the cashews and leave the rest.]

Boy is my face red. I fixed it. I've only been divorced for 6 months, I don't think I'm ready to give up and play for the other team yet.:b

Greg, I didn't know you wre divorced. If I did, I wouldn't have taken all your money at poker 2 weeks ago.
And what's this about showing your nuts? I'll have to go back and read this thread. I haven't been on here since before Jonathan's HT meet.
