Jean Harlow Boxed Set???? - Page 9

I believe Warner has The Secret Six in their library and it hasn't been released on DVD.

Oh yeah, that was MGM. Thanks for the correction.

If Warner acquires the other 3 non-MGM titles from Universal, Sony & Fox, they could easily do another boxset. Since Red-Headed Woman is technically out of print now, they could also throw that in with remastered video - hopefully this time with a commentary and a featurette.

I'd love to see Iron Man and Goldie play on TCM. That's probably the only chance of Iron Man and Goldie seeing the light of day. Although I did see Goldie back in 2006 when it was screened at Film Forum in NYC as part of their Fox before the code series. I don't remember it that fondly; it seemed to be more of a Warren Hymer starring vehicle, with Spencer Tracy and Jean Harlow taking a back seat to him.

I still have a DVD-r recording of when TCM showed Three Wise Girls.

Red-Headed Woman is not out of print, technically or otherwise. It's available in the two disc TCM Archives Forbidden Hollywood Volume One set.

"Red-Headed Woman is not out of print, technically or otherwise. It's available in the two disc TCM Archives Forbidden Hollywood Volume One set."

Then I stand corrected on that point. I still would have no problem with WHV making this title available for those who don't want to purchase the whole Forbidden Hollywood set (they'll also likely get the incredible one-sheet poster art which is considered among the best of that era on a single disc release).

Reggie, I only wanted to set the record straight because this was the second time I had seen that statement. I don't like to see anyone discouraged from buying a good movie: "I'd buy it, but it's probably 300 dollars on Ebay." No, it's currently $17.90 on Amazon.

As for the other films you mentioned, I hope Warner will take your suggestion. I would love to see the box set you describe.

No problem Bob. I'm now wondering the same thing about the Music Man Blu-ray. It's supposed to be out of print, but a few places still seem to be selling if for/around retail price.

On another note, I received my Harlow set yesterday. I watched Personal Property last night and had no problems with the video/audio quality. In fact, it impressed me. The packaging is nice, though I still feel that this set should've been pressed with some features that gave us some insight into Harlow. Saratoga being bare-bones with no featurette on the production or mention of the obvious double in many scenes is still puzzling.

I know everyone can't be Criterion, but still..........

It seems that Amazon.com is now offering a $42.49 pre-order price on this set with free shipping included. Availability is being listed as Nov 14th.

My set arrived from Amazon.ca last night. Not had a chance to watch anything in it yet but it is here.

Has anyone else had any issues with the video quality? I've only watched Girl From Missouri, Suzy & Personal Property. The later films looked pretty good, but "Girl" was very so-so. I've heard a few complaints from Harlow fans regarding the condition of Bombshell & espeically Saratoga. I think that people are going to have to accept that "remastered" doesn't mean "restored." Darrell Rooney told me he thought the TCM broadcast looked cleaner than the Bombshell in this collection.

I'm reserving judgment until I've seen it for myself.

That's very true. In this case, Warner has original nitrates, so sharpness and contrast are generally where one looks for improvement. Dirt, film damage, etc are fixed through digital restoration.

I thought Bombshell was rather good, especially for a 1933 MGM film, which tended to use softer focus for women's films. Same with The Girl From Missouri the following year. They're about on par with the visual quality of the pre-code Garbos that have been released.

I'm pretty sure most will agree Saratoga has the weakest image quality on this set. I hope that title is revisited with a remaster sometime in the future.

Red Dust was on Laserdisc and I guess VHS as well in USA. The Laserdisc was a double with the remake, Mogambo?

The Secret Six(1931) is also WB's as it is an MGM film.

Goldie(1931) is a Fox Spencer Tracy film with Billy Barty playing a child in it.

Three Wise Girls(1932) is a Columbia release.

Iron Man(1931) is a Lew Ayres/Tod Browning Universal film.
