I would give anything to see a traditional Friday film along the lines of the first four.

Really foresty atmosphere, some shocking and brutal kills, hardly ever seeing or getting a good look at Jason until the final climax (something all the later Friday films didn't do, they showed far too much of Jason in the first hour) and most of all - no gimmicks! No whodunit, no Naked-Gun style humor, no Carrie-meets-Jason, or Jason on a cruise-ship or Jason going to Vancouver er, New York, no "explanation" for Jason's long life, no going into Space, nothing.

I think it speaks volumes that, aside from Freddy Vs. Jason, the last Friday film to make any serious money was The Final Chapter.

The problem isn't that nobody can think up a great idea, the problem starts when the studio veto's it and instead wants something cheap, stupid and routine to draw in as many teens as possible.

It's a crying shame.

Yeah, he takes two glasses, pours poison in to both of them, but making Shawn only think he poured poison into one of them, they both drink, and since Jason can't die, they both drink the poison, and Jason wins!

Yea, I would prefer wildman Jason to rotting zombie Jason as well.

In 2-4 Jason was scary, he chased people.

Zombie Jason just walks around, lets people hit him, stab him, shoot him, make fun of him.

It is unfortunate that New Line seems determined to "fast track" this thing to get it out by this Halloween. This could end up being the most rushed F13 film of the series (although A New Beginning was right up there too).

If the rumors are true that they're going to make a film that fits in between parts 1 and 2, than color me ecstatic. It just doesn't seem like the filmmakers would go through all of the trouble to set this in the early 80s between 1980 and '85. Then again Platinum Dunes did set both of their remakes in their proper time periods so again, I suppose anything is possible.

My biggest fear stems from the fact that neither Bay produced remake was worth a damn (at least in my eyes) and I would fear the same results for this.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this won't be a remake, but my pessimism is getting the better of me.

Yep, but my all time favorite Jason was CJ Graham in part VI, he just seemed to have attitude in that one that I loved, plus yes, I also find him to be creepy in that one as well.

Me too. I can't say I'm a rabid "fan," but I have seen all the films (and own the DVD box set) and Part VI was my favorite.

Definitely make Jason more nimble and vicious. I wouldn't make him a martial arts master, but something more scary than the shuffling zombie who, through the magic of movies, always catches up with his victim no matter how much faster than him they run.

I saw every new F13 film religiously in theaters, beginning with PART 2. For years I'd always said that whenever I go to see a Friday film, I check my values and brain at the door -- and I basically go just to see ol' Jason kill teenagers in a variety of new and inventive ways. That's all I really needed back then, for this particular type of film...

... but TODAY I think that formula is no longer enough. I'm glad it appears that there may be more to this movie than the typical old routine, so let's see... though it does seem to be rushed. How much of this is still a rumor at this point?

I liked those Jasons the best, too, with 2 and 4 my favorites. Most fans seem to vote Kane Hodder (7-10) as the best Jason. I did like his performance in Part 7, since it was the first time Jason was just really pissed off, over-the-top brutal. But Hodder's Jason became like a WWF character. He was too big, too muscular (especially since he was supposed to be a corpse) and too fearless. In Part 8, Jason even takes a stroll down the subways and streets of NY, totally oblivious to the people around him. I realize this is not Hodder's fault, but the writers'. By then, he had become more funny than scary. The same thing happened to Freddy and Chucky. After so many films, the novelty was long gone. They all became running jokes.

I much prefer the mysterious, almost child-like Jason of the early films. The one who lurks in the shadows and strikes only when he can get away without being seen. His animal-like, predatory nature was far scarier than the hulking "zombie" Jason of the later films. Victims of the early Jason were almost always caught off-guard, never suspecting their imminent death. The later Jasons seemed to always crash through a door or window, almost announcing to his victims, "Hey! I'm Here! You're gonna die!" This method removed all suspense and shock value.

Actually, part VII was the SECOND time Jason was portrayed as being pissed off and over the top, again, CJ Graham beat Kane to that in part VI. Notice how manypieces he cut 'Roy' into for shooting hi with that paint gun, he was clearly angry.

I agree comletely that Kane's Jason was simply too large, although I admire the living shit out of Kane for embracing Jason as he did, he loved playing him and I was truly sad for him when he was passed over for Ken Kertzinger in Freddy vs Jason.

Yeah, but I didn't detect the same rage that Hodder brought to the character. I thought Jason 6 had too much of a Michael Myers-like walk; too stiff and robotic. I also hated the way he looked with the stupid utility belt and leather gloves. To me, he looked more like a Sears repairman than a zombie serial killer. The only thing missing was the embroidered badge that said "Jason" on his work shirt.

But the film, overall, is still one of my favorite F13 films. It has some of my favorite kills of the whole series, especially the sheriff who gets folded in half...backwards! I also love the part when he grabs the guy by the arm and hurls him into the tree. Jason looks down and sees he's still holding the guy's arm - freshly ripped from its body! He has a sort of curious "Ooh! Did I just do that ?!" look on his face (mask). It was one of the first attempts at humor in the series, having Jason be unwittingly initiated into the game of PaintBall!

If I had to rank the "Jason" movies (w/o Part 1) in order of preference: 4, 2, 6, 7, 11 (FvJ), 3, 10, 8, 9, 5

your reasons for not caring for Jason in part VI are the reasons I loved him in that one. I loved his utility belt and gloves, he was just a bad mother f**ker in that installment.

My favorite Jason's in order are...

part VI, VII (Kane rocked in those tattered cloths, chain and exposed spinal column), IV, III, VIII (although his mask was too large for his face), FvsJ, II, Jason Goes to Hell, Jason in the first half of Jason X and Jason in the last half of Jason X.

I don't count part V because it wasn't Jason.

This is really depressing. I can't wait to see which hot young music video director they pick for this. Their Texas Chainsaw remake was okay, but the Amityville remake was completely awful. If they screw this up, I will pay good money for a Michael Bay voodoo doll.

Speaking of dolls, er, um, I mean figurines...

Worse yet, I can't wait to see which hot-for-the-moment pop/hip-hop stars they cast. They say they are interested in going back to the origins of the story. It'd also be nice to go back to the origin of the series' production values by casting mostly no-name actors. Unlikely in today's Hollywood, where every movie must be marketed to the teen audience with every possible MTV and hip-hop angle possible.

When's the last time you saw a horror movie that had a really good score, and not a soundtrack polluted with crappy pop and hip-hop songs? Every time I think I've found one, the end credits roll and some damn crapola song starts to play, totally spoiling the tone of the film. I want my last impression of the film to be the tone the credits/final score set, not some last-ditch effort to market the damn soundtrack CD. BTW, when was the last time a soundtrack CD was marketed containing the film's actual score, and not some stupid compilation of pop/hip-hop songs? Man I feel old.

John, I have that same figure, as well as every other 7", 12" and 18" Jason, Freddy, Michael, Leatherface, etc. figure ever made by McFarlane and NECA! I have them adorning my basement home theater room. I have to rotate them on display every so often, since I don't have enough shelving for them all!

My current favorite is the Jason (Part 2) with his mother's shrine and Pamela Voorhees diorama. I also have the limited edition resin statues of FvsJ and Michael vs Loomis. With the bases, each one is about 2' long and over 1' tall. They're pretty cool, but take up a lot of space.

My sister-in-law won't let my nephew down in my basement until I've put away all my "toys". Before he visits, I have to hide the horror props and replace them with the "kid-friendly" props like Woody and Buzz, Timon and Pumba, Scooby, Muppets, etc. Good thing I have several of those, too.

I'll never forget the time when, years ago, one of my out-of-state aunts was visiting my home for the first time. I gave her the tour which ended in the theater room. She walked in, took a look around and enthusiastically said, "Oh! You collect figurines!" As she got closer to the display (and got a close look at the blood-splattered apron of Leatherface), she exclaimed, "Oh how sick! Now I know why you're still single." Priceless.

I can't get over how alike we are in this respect! I have all of the same figures, I just got the Jason and Pamela diorama two weeks ago and agreed that it's sweet. I also have all of mine sitting around my theater room, except for mine is in my living room, needless to say I get lots of comments and looks from visitors.

McFarlane has dropped in quality IMO (except for his new 12" Predator), but NECA rocks, I can't wait for the 18" Tony Montana figure from Scarface!

That's because McFarlane's most talented artists/sculptors left to work for NECA. I also can't wait for the Tony Montana figure. Have you heard what else they've got coming this year...

Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning is my favorite of the series, Jason or no Jason. I think it's by far the creepiest of the series as well, so they could definitely come up with a quality film in a short period of time. I don't expect them to though, not with Bay's little company involved, and especially not if it's a remake. I'd love to see a sequel or prequel with a real sense of quality and respect for the series mythology, but I have almost zero hope for this film.

For the hell of it, here's how I'd rank the series in order of preference:

5, 4, 3, 1, X, 7, 2, JGTH, 6, FvJ, 8.

Re: Rumors

Rumors have been going around for quite sometime now. The first rumor I heard was for a sequel and then that prequel talk kicked in. Now the latest word is remake.

There's only one problem. Paramount owns the rights to "Friday the 13th" as this was something that didn't go over to New Line. NL will either have to buy them from Paramount or change the title as well. Or, perhaps both studios will have to put their name on this.

Yep, Matt, I visit NECA's website almost on a daily basis, i'm still waiting for them to do an 18" Predator, it's my holy grail of figure collecting. I know that Sideshow makes one but it's far too expensive for me.

Predator and Alien are the only cool film licenses McFarlane still holds. As soon as those expire, I'm sure NECA will jump on them, and the first thing they'll do is release an 18" figure of each. They've done this with just about every other licensed franchise McFarlane used to control. The guys currently doing the sculpts for NECA are the same ones who did the early McFarlane figures, only their craft is now perfected. I can't wait to see what they've got in store...

Paramount does not own the rights to the name Friday the 13th. The only thing they own are the first eight films (and the characters in them). The name, along with the Jason character (and Pamela Voorhees, apparently) went to New Line. Just check out anything made recently with the Friday the 13th name; it says it's a copyright of NLC.

And if this one isn't a remake, and is instead set between 1 and 2, I would be more than happy. I mean, it's possible Jason killed a few people all those years in the woods, so there's a story there. If it's a remake, I'll see it, but I won't be happy.

I have all those NECA figures too. All the SS Collectibles 12" too. The newest one, Jason from "The Final Chapter" goes on sale tomorrow.

As for actors, Kane will always be my favorite Jason, and it's absolutely terrible that NLC (or Ronny Yu or whoever) passed over him for FVJ. That said, he wouldn't be right for this one if it's a prequel that takes place when Jason was presumably "human," so it won't kill me if he isn't in it.

I've always been a bit confused by this situation. NLC owns the name and characters now, but of course Paramount still owns the first eight films. Does Paramount retain rights to the F13 logo in its classic typestyle? The first four movies were released on DVD with their original artwork and logos, then the last four films and complete box set were released with newly-created artwork and logos.

All of the Paramount F13 figures released by SideShow have featured the original title logos and mini-reproductions of the original posters on their packaging. The Paramount name and logo are clearly visible on the poster repos, but NLC is given copyright credit in several places on the packaging. If these logos and images are, in fact, copyrights of Paramount, SideShow screwed up big-time, as there are no Paramount copyright notices whatsoever.

Although NLC has current rights to the F13 name and characters, doesn't Paramount retain rights to the likeness of their characters and their poster art and logos from the films they own?

I bought Peter Bracke's new F13 book, Crystal Lake Memories, hoping for some details regarding the transition from Paramount to NLC, but this issue wasn't covered in detail. BTW, it's a great book!

The only thing I can think of is maybe Paramount actually sold the rights (to print and market) the original logo and poster art to NLC, while retaining only the right to market the filmed footage of their eight films. This would explain why Paramount released their recent DVDs with newly-created artwork and logos. They may have had no choice. And NLC, looking to differentiate their F13 offerings, have chosen to not follow the artwork and logos already established in this (tired) series. The fact that they have yet to use the phrase "Friday the 13th" in any of their films' titles may prove the point.

Does anyone have any reliable explanation for this matter? I continue to be curious.

Brett, I was unaware that SS was putting out a figure for Part 4. I couldn't find anything on their site. I don't remember seeing anything in their newsletters or emails. Where did you learn of this? If true, thanks for the heads up.

And you explanation about the whole NLC/Paramount thing is right in line with what I figure; like you said, NLC gets mentioned for copyrights on just about anything, even the old posters. Even the Paramount box set credits NLC with a copyright I believe. It kind of sucks too, because I hate that the first 4 DVD's have the classic art, while the rest have the most generic stuff possible.

Thanks for the link. I hope Jason's head has the slice from the machete. That was one of Savini's best gags! I can remember the screams from the audience as though it was yesterday.

I wonder if SS will offer an exclusive accessory for this figure. If so, what would it be? Maybe a corkscrew or meat cleaver? They were unique weapons in the series, and both were used to kill Crispin Glover's character.
