Whoa!!

"Variety reports that New Line Cinema, ending a long period of speculation, is moving forward with a new FRIDAY THE 13TH movie. And it's coming sooner than might have been expected; the studio is aiming to have the film in theaters Friday, October 13, 2006. Rather than a FREDDY VS. JASON follow-up, the new feature will go back to explore the origins of Jason Voorhees. That's all that's been reported right now, but we'll be looking into this and bringing you updates just as soon as we can. —Michael Gingold (Fangoria)"

Thank you for this bit of news, as a life long Friday the 13th fan, I am always awaiting the next installment. For some reason I misread the title and thought there was a made for tv movie, heh... I can not complain.

$5 says that New Line will do the much-rumored "Elm Street" origin story for Freddy shortly after this.

Good news, though I'm surprised they didn't go with FVJ2 just because it seems like more of a guaranteed cash draw.

I'm all for taking Jason back to his roots. I wasn't too big of a FVJ fan, and thought JX was okay, but a bit campy. It could be fun though.

Yes! Just what I wanted to hear--a solo sequel. I loved Freddy vs. Jason, but honestly, I think it could do without a sequel. It also makes sense--New Line is releasing a prequel to TCM in October, too. That's going to be a good month for sure.
Was it Sean Cunningham who also said that a remake was in the works? I'll hope for the best but it seems they're going to be really rushing this thing to make 10/13/06.
I don't think a "Friday" remake has been discussed. A "Halloween" remake was discussed, but I don't know what's going on there.

Back when there was only a couple F13th movies, the rumor was that the filmmakers wanted to ultimately make 13 movies. They might actually get their wish. But on the other hand, I doubt they will finally stop at part 13.

I wouldn't be against another FvJ sequel, as long as it's the rumored Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash version - that, I think could be classic.

I think one of the reasons that "Freddy Vs. Jason 2" has gotten delayed for so long was because Sam Raimi wouldn't give up the rights to the Ash character for the "Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash" movie that was being planned. I know that the script was there and I think even Bruce Campbell was ready to sign on but Raimi wouldn't give permission to the character (either because he wanted to remake "Evil Dead" or make "Evil Dead 4"). Too bad, the script sounded like it would've been a very fun flick.

This is great news. There were rumblings that New Line wanted to revamp and revisit "Friday the 13th" with a remake. I'm thrilled to hear that they're opted for another installment in the series rather than a reboot. My only request is that they try and take Jason back to the scarier side of parts 2 and 4.

Great news. I liked FREDDY VS JASON, but once was enough for that idea and anything further would kill the novelty of that film. I'm glad to learn that New Line is examining the origin, and perhaps trying to do something other than just another carbon copy sequel.
The script for Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash was excellent. I wouldn't have minded that being filmed. Since that didn't work out, I'm kind of glad they aren't going to do another FVJ for now (but it's not like I wouldn't have been excited). I think I'm just glad to see that New Line thinks F13 can still stand on its own without the "vs." gimmick.
How about Freddy vs. Jason vs. Alien vs. Predator? I'd pay 10 bucks for that one.
Since New Line is a subsidiary of Warner, you could throw in Batman, Supes, Aquaman, the Teen Titans, Morpheus, and the Green Arrow for an all-out superhero-horror icon battle royale, possibly in a live volcano filled with sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads.

don't get me wrong, a new F13 sounds great, but how much of a movie is an origin story going to be? A kid drowns in the lake. That's it, isn't it?

No, there's plenty of "untold story" between his "drowning" and his first appearance as the killer in Part 2.

Yeah, maybe this one will show what Jason was up to all those years before part 2. This one might also explore Mrs. Voorhees's attempts to keep the camp closed the Enos mentions in the first one, but I'm not so sure there's much to show there.

Very cool...and very unexpected! I'm a sucker for ol' Hocky-puss and will see every one of them.

This shows promise, if done right it could be Jason Begins.

Who else thinks they'll probably try something similar to the new trend of horror films and make it a gross out splatter? Don't get me wrong, the Friday films have usually been pretty bloody, but I have a feeling they might go for the vibe of Saw, Saw II, Hostel, and the like. If they play their cards right, they could have a hit on their hands.
That sounds like a good idea, as F13 gained its reputation for gore and inventive deaths. So I guess it makes sense for it to be reintroduced in the 21st century to show everyone how splatter films are really done.
I just hope they don't make this new Friday the 13th movie funny and sarcastic like the awful Jason X. All we want, as horror fans, is to bring Jason back to his roots. Actually try to build up some suspense and dread!

I can hear the tears of all the critics around the world crying as we speak. Seriously though, I don't even get why they view these films. It's not as if they are turning into tear jerker dramas starring Leo Dicaprio anytime soon.

Anywho, need more information before I can comment further.

On one hand, I am partially excited. On the other hand, it's a shame that no one who come up with any worthy horror icons in years. They have to keep milking on our retro characters who should have been put to rest years ago.

Not just with the horror genre. It seems like they want to milk on popular characters from many genres from all the news of sequels and remakes going around.

It's our fault u kno cause we keep paying to see it. Just like I probably will. I give up. I don't know what to do. On on hand, I would like to see some original movies. But, if I never watched movies and waited for that to happen, I would be halfway near death before it finally paid off. Decisions Decisions.

P.S. Financial end? Well, im not sure. If it's a retro movie in that respect set at a campsite, I think it could do well just off the nostalgia factor. Same as an Elm Street could do well if based off the original concept since it's been so long. If it's more goofy ideas like Jason X, Hellspawn Jason, and Freddy's Baby, they will pretty much bury themselves. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Hasn't Ebert made a vow NEVER to review a "Friday the 13th" movie again? I think he stopped after Part 4 or something.
He DID end up reviewing Jason X, but hated it with a passion. one half of a star.
Ebert once reviewed (I think) FRIDAY 2 and then added something like: "this review can stand for the FRIDAY THE 13th film of your choice".

Which sums up the treatment these types of films get.
It's not like F13 is "good cinema" or anything so that's why critics hate them. They DO enjoy other stuff like HALLOWEEN, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, EVIL DEAD and a few others.

Anyway, this upcoming film is a remake:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Bloody-disgusting.com

It was revealed today that New Line Cinema is working on a remake of Friday the 13th, not the earlier reported prequel, according to Fangoria. Series creator Sean Cunningham explains, "New Line is aggressively pursuing a new film.” As for who is slated to take the directorial reins, Cunningham says, “I’m flattered that [New Line] is interested, but I’m not really involved, at least not at this point.” Even though Fango is claiming that the new Jason Voorhees flick will be a remake, nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet- watch this spot for more news soon. In the original, many years after two summer camp councilers are killed at Camp Crystal Lake, the owner decides to reopen, which sparks a series of grisly murders. The murderer ends up being the mother of a camper who died because of the counslers irresponsibility.

If it DOES turn out to be a remake, I bet its a very loose remake. Most people don't even know that Jason wasn't the killer in Part 1 and I'd assume that they'd change it so it would be him. Unless that's the twist the studio is going for. The non-fans who see the movie expecting Jason will have the surprise at the end.

In the case of Ebert, he only saw Part 2 and then allowed his review to stand, presumably for any later future films that ever got made, as I took it. I don't think it's very professional to see one film in a series and then say "this will stand for any of the others too", if a critic hasn't even seen them.

As for the new film being a remake, nothing's solid on that yet. Right in your quote it says:

"Even though Fango is claiming that the new Jason Voorhees flick will be a remake, nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet".

I don't mind the idea of a sort of "prequel" to examine Jason's origins, but to start the whole franchise again from scratch is plain idiotic.

Ebert reviewed parts 1,2 and 4 on his review show with Siskel. The review in question (in his book & website) had the last paragraph added to it after the two skipped part 5.
