I have no problem with their original 2000 release of THE ABYSS being non-anamorphic. What I have a problem with is Fox re-releasing the title 2 or 3 times since 2000 with the same damn transfer. It still looks really good on my 36" direct view set, but it turns to shit when it's blown up on my 57" widescreen rear projection set. A film as big as THE ABYSS really shouldn't be confined to a small TV. C'mon Fox!

Yeah, now that you mentioned that, I have noticed the same thing hear in the United Kingdom, Fox as done it with so many and some of the above mentioned ones, what is there game?

I guess till the day I can afford a video projector, with 16:9 technology, at an affordable price of under £800,00 pounds, that is the only time I would see the films quality on DVD or the newer format looks like its been tried behind the back of a car and dragged for a few blocks?

The Abyss with a new anamorphic transfer?

What's the latest word on the new anamorphic DVD of The Abyss that's supposed (according to a post here some months back) to be coming out fairly soon?

Re: The Abyss with a new anamorphic transfer?

Well, we're getting pretty close to Christmas, so we should be hearing some solid details pretty soon.

Oh, and I cannot believe that Criterion's Brazil is non-anamorphic. Some great movies deserve better treatment, that's for sure...

It does deserve better treatment, and now it...um....."does"!

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

Waiting for an anamoprhic version of "The Abyss" is like waiting for a new transfer of "Blade Runner." You might as well give up.

Oh wait...

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

My favorite Cameron movie. Count me in if they ever release an animorphic version... Though by the time that happens I'll probably be in the next format.

You guys keep bringing all these things up that *should* be released. Well, they'll go back and fix all these mistakes whenever the DVD format is nearing its run as a highly profitable business and right about the time that sales start to dip for the first time ever. Uhhh, oh yeah!!

A member of a German forum wrote an E-Mail to DVD-Producer Van Ling a week ago. This is his respond:

The fate of a new transfer of "The Abyss" is still in the hands of James Cameron at this point... he has been too busy prepping his new movie to review and approve what's been done, so I do not think the remaster will be on the release schedule any time soon.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

I know James loves to be a perfectionist, but I think he should take a little time to look at the new transfer.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

I don't see how one of the best sci-fi movies out there could go so long without a new anamorphic transfer. Hopefully this will get done very soon.

He's too busy producing documentaries about finding Jesus' lost tomb.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

Here's a blurb from thedigitalbits.com:
"Fox and MGM are also re-releasing a number of catalog sci-fi and action DVD's on 6/5 with new lenticular covers (SRP $14.98 each), including Alien, Aliens, Alien vs. Predator, The Abyss: Director's Cut, I, Robot, Predator, RoboCop and Independence Day. Also coming from the studios are 2-disc SE re-releases in new "SteelBook" metal covers (SRP $22.98 each), including Cast Away, The Day After Tomorrow, Die Hard, Fight Club, Hannibal, Man on Fire, Platoon, The Omen and X2: X-Men United."

Is there any hope this may be anamorphic?

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

No. Mislabeled anamorphic maybe, but not really anamorphic.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

Oh boy! The Abyss: Director's Cut is already mislabeled!

The theatrical release is the director's cut. The special edition is an extended version of the movie.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

well i suppose but he did go back and recut the film and add the new scenes into the movie himself.
they are both a dir cut.
one is an extended cut that was what the film was suppose to be in the first place.

doesnt really matter anyway.
the long cut is the one that will continue to be on dvd.

That's poppycock. Cameron despises the theatrical cut, it is by no means a directors cut.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

Oh boy, ok here we go again. There is no Director's Cut, they are both Director's Cut. The theatrical release is called The Abyss and the thing released later is called The Abyss: Special Edition. James Cameron doesn't hate the original version and it absolutely has a place on DVD/... . He acknowledges it and there are many people who can't stand the "soap-opera" and "overacting" aspects of the Special Edition.

The Abyss: Special Edition

I misspoke (and it made someone resort to using the word 'poppycock') but I meant that the theatrical cut is a version that Cameron approved. Fox didn't force him to make changes to the movie for the theater.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

they only told him to make it shorter.. like 2 hours and 20 minutes.. not 2 hours and 51 minutes.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

so... all cockypops aside- can anyone officially confirm or deny a possible anamorphic transfer on the upcoming re-release of The Abyss?

Additionally- is there any resource that lists all of the non-anamorphic dvd releases? I suppose I could just look through all of my discs, but with a couple thousand, that chore could take a while and wouldn't necessarily be accurate.

Thanks!

I can't confirm or deny anything. But my gut tells me that if The Abyss ever gets an anamorphic release, you won't really need to put a lot of effort into tracking down that information.

Yes, but this is scheduled to be re-released in under a month and there is no confirmation one way or the other. Is this simply a repackaging? According to Amazon, the aspect ratio for this release is 1.33:1. Is it only being re-released as this edited version? It seems as though after the second or third reissue, we'd get a proper anamorphic transfer... apparently just wishful thinking.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

Going by the information at The Digital Bits, all the titles are re-packagings with a lenticular cover. Like Mark said, if it was a new transfer you would have heard about it.

Re: THE ABYSS anamorphic release? (MERGED THREAD)

Yeah. Van Ling would've been all over the place talking about it.
