Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

Hopefully Disney will treat this show more like "Gargoyles", than "DuckTales" and "Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers".

I personally can't wait to see the pilot "Darkly Dawns the Duck" unedited again. Maybe the commercial break "bumpers" will be there this time as well.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I think it's great that Disney is finally releasing their shows. I hope they include the Pilot as well.
I was hoping for Darkwing and TaleSpin to be the two shows. 1 of 2 is not bad, lol. Oh well, The Tick fans will be happy. I hope we see another volume of DuckTales and Chip 'n Dale very soon.
Pavan, I too was disappointed by todays 'big' news. I was expecting Darkwingduck and Gummi Bears, or Tailspin. I didn't even know that Tick show was Disney. So much for big news.

News is rarely this good.

Hopefully the 2-part "Darkly Dawns the Duck" ends up on this set; though, if they follow the pattern they used for DuckTales and Rescue Rangers (production, not airdate order), then these episodes (#52-53, though about 7 production numbers don't exist) won't make it till a second set.

At any rate, I'm just thoroughly stoked.

Does anyone know a way to contact the show's creator, Tad Stones (not that Disney is likely to contact him for anything concerning the DVD)?

Wikipedia has an entry for "Darkly Dawns the Duck", including what was edited in re-runs, (they noted it was completely restored, hopefully this will also be true of DVD) for the home video release.

Great to hear about Darkwing Duck & Tale Spin finally coming to DVD, has there been any word on any more seasons of Ducktales or Rescue Rangers?

Sweet! This is very good news. Now all we need is Gummi Bears.
Aside from the editing of Darkly Dawns the Duck, a bunch of Gas Gun sequences were cut out of some of the DD episodes on Toon Disney.I wonder (and hope) if the DVD will restore them
post #11 of 31
This is good news. I hope it's unedited and the pilot is included (I'm still wondering why Ducktales and Chip N Dales didn't have their pilots).
Will these be releases like Ducktales and Rescue Rangers or those 3-episode Quack Pack and Goof Troop discs?

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

Well, they are both coming in August around the same time as the Tick, so my assumption has been that they are being released like Ducktales and Rescue Rangers. Of course we haven't had any official word yet, so it's hard to say for sure.

Disney told me all multiple part episodes for DuckTales and Chip 'n Dale will be released as a separate "movie" release. So, that is why the 5-part pilots for each were missing.

WHOA! First I'd heard that, that is great news!!!!! I was wondering if they were even going to get around to releasing more volumes, but this makes it sound like they are dedicated to releasing the whole shebang!!!!!!!!!

Disney is including the pilots for both "Darkwing Duck" and "TaleSpin".

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

This is freakin' awesome.

I agree with the above poster that I'd most like to see Gummi Bears next. It's a shame about Goof Troop and Quack Pack, but, spilt milk at this point I guess.

Maybe next: Gummi Bears and Aladdin?

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

Awesome, totally freakin' awesome! Now, just pop out some more seasons of Ducktales, and C&D:RR, and I'll be a happy camper!

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

They are, November! And maybe we will become more clear on how they're going to do the pilots for those, I heard somewhere mention of packaging the pilots as their own 'box set' sold separately from the volumes themselves. I don't know if that was actually officialized though.

I also hope we hear word on the final volume of Gargoyles too. And I'm not talking about GOLIATH CHRONICLES (which I would also buy, just for completeness. heh heh heh. im a sucker)

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

So, I guess this is the episode list for Volume 1 (in production order):

27 total episodes

52 Pilot: Darkly Dawns the Duck (Part 1)
53 Pilot: Darkly Dawns the Duck (Part 2)
1 Water Way to Go
2 In Like Blunt
4 Dirty Money
6 A Duck by Any Other Name
7 That Sinking Feeling
8 Getting Antsy
9 Battle of the Brainteasers
10 Fungus Amongus
12 Can't Bayou Love
13 You Sweat Your Life
14 Trading Faces
15 Hush, Hush Sweet Charlatan
16 Apes of Wrath
17 Duck Blind
18 Beauty and the Beet
19 Double Darkwings
20 Heavy Mental
21 Aduckyphobia
22 A Brush with Oblivion
23 Whiffle While You Work
24 Easy Come, Easy Grows
25 Negaduck
26 Dry Hard
27 All's Fahrenheit in Love and War
28 Something Fishy

NOTES:
* I guess they are including the pilot just so fans don't wonder why it wasn't included, because the pilot was actually produced 52nd and 53rd, which would make it on a second or third volume of DVDs
* No numbers 3, 5 11 are not not missing. Disney just numbered them strange in production order.

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

As for TaleSpin...

The set also might be in production order, like DuckTales and Chip 'n Dale (and possibly Darkwing too), so this is what I think TaleSpin Vol. 1 will have:

27 total half hours

1. I Only Have Ice for You
2. A Bad Reflection on You (Part 1)
3. Time Waits for No Bear
4. A Touch of Glass
5. It Came From Beneath the Sea Duck
6. Stormy Weather
7. The Bigger They Are, the Louder They Oink
8. For a Fuel Dollars More
9. The Idol Rich
10. Mommy for a Day
11. The Time Bandit
12. Polly Wants a Treasure
13. From Here to Machinery
14. A Spy in the Ointment
15. All's Whale That Ends Whale
16. Bearly Alive
17. A Star is Torn
18. Her Chance to Dream
19. Molly Coddled
20. On a Wing and a Bear
21. The Golden Sprocket of Friendship
22. War of the Wierds
23. Whistlestop Jackson, Legend
Bonus:
29 Pilot: Plunder and Lightning (Part 1)
30 Pilot: Plunder and Lightning (Part 2)
31 Pilot: Plunder and Lightning (Part 3)
32 Pilot: Plunder and Lightning (Part 4)

NOTES:
* I guess they are including the pilot just so fans don't wonder why it wasn't included, because the pilot was actually produced fas episodes 29-32, which would make it on a second volume of DVDs.
* Hopefully the 4-part pilot is in its original movie format because that is the unedited version.
* A Bad Reflection on You (Part 2) is actually episode 63 in production order, that is why it is missing.

I hope they go by airdate order instead with TaleSpin, because it would be strange not having part 2 of "A Bad Reflection on You."

If they go airdate order here are the first 23 episodes:
1 From Here to Machinery 1990-09-10
2 It Came From Beneath the Sea Duck 1990-09-11
3 Time Waits for No Bear 1990-09-12
4 Mommy for a Day 1990-09-13
5 I Only Have Ice for You 1990-09-14
6 Molly Coddled 1990-09-17
7 Polly Wants a Treasure 1990-09-18
8 Vowel Play 1990-09-19
9 The Idol Rich 1990-09-20
10 Stormy Weather 1990-09-21
11 Bearly Alive 1990-09-24
12 Her Chance to Dream 1990-09-25
13 All's Whale That Ends Whale 1990-09-26
14 The Golden Sprocket of Friendship 1990-09-27
15 For a Fuel Dollars More 1990-09-28
16 A Bad Reflection on You (Part 1) 1990-10-01
17 A Bad Reflection on You (Part 2) 1990-10-02
18 On a Wing and a Bear 1990-10-03
19 A Star is Torn 1990-10-04
20 A Touch of Glass 1990-10-05
21 The Bigger They Are, the Louder They Oink 1990-10-08
22 A Spy in the Ointment 1990-10-09
23 The Balooest of the Blue Bloods 1990-10-15

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

I hope the episodes are in their original form. I'm concerned that I DO NOT WANT TO SEE EDITED Episodes like the Beavis and Butthead Mike Judge Collection Vol. 1 in which all "directors Cut" episodes (Except two early Mr. Anderson episodes of B&B Home Improvement and Lawn and Garden which restore some offensive content edited out of reruns) are actually edited episodes, MTV Edited out the fire references from B&B Episodes made before october 1993 (Including the Then-Unaired Citizen Butthead) The EDITS done on Beavis and Butthead reruns of episodes made before October of 1993 are as shocking as the editing of Darkwing Duck reruns, I WANT DARKWING DUCK IN IT's ORIGINAL UNCENSORED FORM ON DVD! OTHERWISE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE DISNEY HAVE TO COMPENSATE US for releasing edited DVDs by releasing Bonkers Vol. One

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

Has it yet been determined if the episodes which Disney stopped airing for these toons, due to questionable content, will be appearing on these sets? You can read about the one for Darkwing Duck on wikipedia at least, the one where Gosalyn digs out that necronomicon in the old library and conjures up Satan, haha. They stopped airing it on TV, I seriously hope that they include these ones in the volumes. TaleSpin had one involving terrorists who wanted bombs smuggled aboard the plane. DuckTales had one that showed an Elvis-like character that was a fat pig.

Darkwing Duck Season 2 is set to release August 7.

Re: Disney to release Darkwing Duck to DVD

Grew up on this series as a kid and was thinking about picking up Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and was wondering if they're both worth it. Are all the episodes that were ever produced on these two sets? Are they uncut? Thanks!
*casts thread necromancy spell*

Since volume 2 of Darkwing Duck came out in 2007, I imagine that the series is dead in the water (well, the whole Disney Afternoon, for that matter - they never did anymore sets of Talespin or Chip and Dales did they?) Was there any news that I missed somewhere or is getting more episodes of Darkwing a lost cause?
They've seemed to have taken a break from releasing their 80's and early 90's cartoons.

Wish it had lasted one more fall so DuckTales could've got finished.

Hopefully it was just them reacting early to the recession and deciding to release them at a time when there's a better chance of them maximizing sales. DuckTales seemed to usually get announced around August/September and it was clearly evident at that point last year that something was up with the economy.

At least I have my tv recordings of the remaining DuckTales episodes not on DVD burned to DVD-r's. Hope I can replace that someday with a official release though.

I need to pick up the TaleSpin and Rescue Ranger sets someday, I enjoyed both of those as well. Never liked Darkwing Duck.
I said in an earlier thread and it bears repeating: Disney is funny about their animation properties. Gummi Bears and Gargoyles were abandoned early on too and they've never finished. Doesn't look like they're going to try and finish Goof Troop either.

No to your first question, and while I don't own them, I do know that the pilot is the edited, two-part rebroadcast. (See post #7 of this thread to find out what has been cut from the DVD release for "Darkly Dawns the Duck".)  Also, according to a review on UltimateDisney.com, the video quality on Volume 1 is poor.
