I tried to watch this movie last night and was disgusted that it was in spanish!!!!!!!!!!!! If I wanted to read Id grab a book!!!!! HATE IT seemed like it would have been a good movie now its garbage

You're kidding, right? It takes place in Spain and involves a Franco era goon trying to destroy leftist rebels, while at the same time he emotionally and psychologically abuses his wife and step-daughter. It was also directed by a Mexican, whose first language is Spanish. It makes complete sense that it was in Spanish. Calling the film garbage (which it wasn't) for some reason that involved the writing or the filming would be one thing. But it is beyond the pale to call it garbage because Spaniards are speaking Spanish!!

Yeah, I kind of figured he wasn't, but I just had to ask because I find it stunning that someone would call a movie garbage based on the fact that it is in a foreign language and requires a person to read subtitles. I mean, don't people read the back of the box in order to see what they getting into? I know that I fundamentally like to know something about the story when I rent or purchase a film. That way I can make a judgement on whether it is worth spending dollars on.

BTW, I completely failed and bought the single disc version. It was the only one Circuit City had and I wasnt even really thinking about it as I got on my way to rushing to a dentist appointment.

Im usually one to say extras usually dont matter to me, but this is one film I would have liked to have them.

Dammit.

You know, I used to think the same thing about subtitles
when I was younger and just as naive as I am today.

One of the best things that happened to me during my
stint as a reviewer for this forum was the amount of foreign
film I was forced to review.

It didn't take long for me to realize how shitty Hollywood films
really are. Once you go out of the Hollywood system, you begin
to see some really remarkable films.

Even when a DVD gives you a dubbed or subtitled version, I will
always pick the latter as so much emotion gets lost in the dubbed
version.

....and for me, subtitles never have detracted from my enjoyment
of a film. With my aged hearing, I usually turn the subtitles on for
every film I watch anyhow.

Bought and watched the DVD last night; I purposely avoided as many spoilers as possible.

I was stunned, for both good and ill.

This movie was far more violent than I ever expected. My wife and I were both cringing and covering our eyes at times. I'm still trying to shake some images from my mind, a day later.

It also had much less fantasy than I expected.

The first third to half of the film was good in an Art Film sort of way: quality acting, unusual story, subtitles, but not emotionally gripping. The latter portion though, beginning with the second task with the key and eyeball-hands was riveting and an emotional vise.

I'm reluctant to recommend this to friends: it's too violent. And not the silly Armageddon blow-up-the-planet violence. This is Man On Fire violence: personal, individual, torturous, horrible.

I've read this thread, and I'm bemused over the questions of whether the "fantasy" was real or not. I just don't think it matters. Perhaps because the fantasy world and the real world are orthogonal to each other. If real, it matters not to anyone but Ofelia and she's in a better place. And if unreal, then (presumably) she's still in a better place.

I was also surprised that Captain surprised Mercedes knifing (and the heavy drugging from Ofelia), but that also when he hadn't yet died Mercedes didn't kill him outright. I'm with Patrick on this one -- it didn't quite make sense to me.

As for sub-titles: as always about 30 minutes in I had forgotend I was reading and it felt like I was hearing them speak English.

Here lately with my second shift job, and the wife not liking a few of the films that I like, I have taken to watching them at night.....my system is not conducive to baby sleeping so DR set to MIN and subtitles on....grumble, grumble...

I watched this last night. I enjoyed it very much but I can't say I loved it as much as many seemed to. For me I really liked the "real world" story much more. As noted elsewhere in the thread, the Captain is really a standout performance and he's riveting every moment he's on the screen.

I'm surprised there's much debate over whether it was in her mind. With the show of the labyrinth parting to allow her to pass and yet deny the Captain, it seemed that Del Toro was making it explicit that it was all "real".

yeah, that's the way I felt too. She ended up where she wanted to be...and where she felt loved, respected, and protected. Or at least she thought she did with her last conscious thought. Either way, I don't see it as an unhappy ending for her.

I was actually riveted as much by the real world story as I was by the fantasy. Frankly, fantasy stuff usually strikes me as insipid and weightless- this is the first film in a long time that had some real substance supporting, justifying, and counter-acting the fantasy material.
I was high on it last night after seeing it for the first time, and the more I mull it over in my head, the higher it rises in my estimation. And it's one of the first films in a very long time where I don't feel compelled to nit-pick plot points, or second guess creative choices. I was enthralled the whole time.

Flat out, the best film I've seen in years

Just messing great box set, great film, but I may wait for a professional dub, hopefully by those expert anime guys.

I kid. I own the film already, a luverly thing it is too. But that set looks magnifico, aye caramba!

I, unlike others, seem to notice PAL speed up so it is an issue with me but please don't let this drop into another off topic debate like DTS/DD...then again the translated notes in Tim's post also say this:

For something this set has, I would certainly have to save a bit to get it, but what a showpiece it would be....and the soundtrack. If I can spend $60 for the Complete Matrix HD DVDs for really only one film I like ...then I'm just the perfect candidate to throw down $75 for this.

But does it have English subs? Or are the sub tracks French only? The package itself does look sweet.

Edit: One other thing it has going for it. The SD version is on a separate disc. No bloody combo; although, I just don't see a need for a SD version in the set at all.

That's a gorgeous set. I have the three disc Brotherhood of the Wolf just for how beautiful it is. I can only watch it on my computer
