Ron's X-Files Season 1 Review - Where is it?

I cannot find this thread for the life of me and I have searched Software, TV shows, SW Archives and Review Archives under various combinations without success.

Can anyone help?

I'll even admit that I am dumbass and probably missed something.

Holadem,

A dumbass you are not.

Here's the sad, sad tale....

15 months ago a hard drive on our server
suddenly died on us. On that server was
all our chat transcripts, meet and event
photos, as well as every single review that
I put together for this forum over the course
of two years.

All lost in the hard drive crash.

I can't begin to tell you how much HTF history
between 1997-2004 was lost in one single act.

That's why you don't see the meet photos
anymore nor can reference our dozens of chat
transcripts over the years.

One of our Moderators was able to use a software
program to rescue all the files that was on that
hard disc. That's the good news. The bad news
is that whenever a hard drive goes defunct (and
possibly through the rescue process), every single
file gets renamed to something obscure.

In other words, we have the files -- but it's
one big soupy mess where everything has been
renamed so we can't easily match the photo files
to the corresponding coded HTML webpage.

It has become my life-long goal to one day sit
and sort through as much of that mess as I can
in hopes of at least reposting our chat transcripts
and perhaps a few HTF MEET pages. Unfortunately,
doing so takes far more time than I have available
to me already.

Thanks for asking.

Thanks Ron, I completely forgot about the crash, that explains a lot.

Thanks.

Holadem,

TRY THIS LINK

This is an archived copy of my review site that we
just uncovered.

We are going to try to import all those reviews back
to HTF.

I am not too certain how well everything was archived
but please feel free to roam around a bit.

Just had a chance to enjoy your review of 1776 for the first time in a long time. Glad to have the opportunity to revisit your insight into that release!

Put that link in a safe place!

Mike,

We found lots of links on that WAYBACK
MACHINE website that reflect all the material
we lost in our hard drive crash a little

At least 75% of what we lost has been
archived on that website.

The challenge for us is to figure out the
easiest way to import all that stuff onto
our server. If there were a simple cut & paste
method of transferring the text and photos
to identical webpages on our server, we would
jump at the opportunity to do it today.

At least we know the material is out there
and once we figure out how best to do it, we
will begin importing all that stuff back.

It's a shame that the MEET PHOTOS after 2003
have been lost. On the other hand, the files
are on our rescued hard drive and perhaps we
can do some reconstruction from that.

If anybody has any ideas on how we can best
accomplish our task, please feel free to
contribute them.

Thanks

I suppose the best place to start would be to initiate a thread over in the computer forum. I doubt too many people "in the know" are going to check in a thread about an X-File Review in HTF Feedback.

There have been a few threads over in "Computers" lately about data recovery. Lots of us have had experiences on this subject, it seems, over the past few weeks....unfortunately.

I assume most HTF members know this, but in case not, a number of chat transcripts are over on the digital bits archives page.

Thanks for the link of Ron's archived reviews. I've bookmarked it.

Ron...

If you have a collection of the relevant links you've found at archive.org, and if they seem to be stored in a common location there (or if there's at least some recognizable pattern to the locations of the stored archives), perhaps some fishing with a program like HTTrack Website Copier or one of the Teleport products might help to gather them up for you and allow you to "import" or mirror them on the new server.

Worth a shot? Maybe??

If you're not familiar with the programs:

http://www.httrack.com (free)

http://www.tenmax.com/ (requires license purchase)

I honestly don't think you've got anything to lose by at least trying the HTTrack, since it's free, if the file locations at archive.org have enough of a structure or recognizable pattern to make it feasible (i.e. "target-able")... Who knows what it might be able to retrieve (and HELP organize)? And, if the process itself shows promise, perhaps the more sophisticated Teleport products might be able to handle anything that HTTrack misses.

Good luck if you decide to try it...

Linda,

You may have just offered us the Holy Grail.

Thank You!

I am going to give that program a try.

I am also going to repost much of this thread
in the Computer area to see what other advice is
given per Mike Frezon's recommendation.

I have a feeling the program you linked to may
do the trick, though! Thank You!

Steve, thanks for that Digital Bits link. That
will come in very handy as well.

Thanks for that link Ron, X-files is not in there, but that site will certainly come in handy for similar searches.
