NETFLIX frustration (transferred thread) - Page 2

Brook,
I wouldn't go with Greencine if you want stuff in a timely manner. They are based in San Francisco and do not have distribution centers. They've talked in the past about putting a distribution center on the East Coast if it's warranted, but I don't believe they've done it yet. Since you appear to be living in Georgia, the wait would be a long one.

I'll second what Dana said Brook. I use Greencine, and am very happy with them. However, speed of discs is not a consideration for me. I have a two out at a time plan, which is cheap, and it's not uncommon for me to wait two or three days after I get one before I watch it. This is certainly cheaper, and more convenient than what I used to do - rent one dvd per week from Hollywood video.

I'm not trying to cram a bunch of dvds into a week. I have way too much other stuff to watch for that. For me to watch the number of rental dvds that some people appear to do with Netflix, I'd never have time to watch the tons of dvds I already own, and watching and enjoying them is a much higher priority for me.

I've never really paid much attention to how quickly I get the Greencine discs since there's always one here when I get ready to watch it. At the most I watch 2, possibly 3 in a week.

Like I said, for me this makes great financial sense - it's cheaper than the alternative. But I'm certainly not getting 'maximal' bang for my buck. That's not my goal, but if it is for someone (and anyone who's upset with Netflix throttling cause they can't get 7+ dvds in a week certainly is looking for that), then I can't recommend Greencine.

Brook,

You should try Blockbuster.com for their 9.99 30 day trial. I get most of my DVDs in one to two days here in Chicago.

Just wanted to share my little Netflix frustration of the week:
I haven't seen either Saw or Saw II. So I put both films at the top of my queue with Saw 1 on top. So then they ship both at the same time and they say I will get both on Saturday and lo and behold I only received Saw 2! AHHH! Obviously it means I have to wait until Monday or Tuesday to receive Saw 1 since I can't watch the sequel without seeing the original! ahhh, could have watched both films this weekend, now I have to wait to find time during the week. Thanks Netflix!

Netflix got pretty bad for me there for a while so I decided to try Blockbuster for a free month (if you order a pizza from Papa Johns online you get a free month). The thing that's bothering me about Netflix is that I use to be able to get a movie on Monday, mail it back Tuesday and have another one on the way to me on Wednesday. Now I'm getting them on Monday, sending them back on Tuesday and getting a new one on Thursday or Friday.

I'm giving Netflix another month because I recently moved to Louisville and the Netflix PO Box for returns is half a mile from where I live. I take the discs to that post office and drop it in their box so it better not take 2-3 days for them to get it and ship my next one.

As far as Blockbuster, I've only been renting 2005 releases but they've been great so far. I'm getting the discs the day after they ship and they appear to be better stocked when it comes to the new releases. Several of the titles I got from Blockbuster have a "long wait" at Netflix.

I've gotten burned like this too, so now I only enter one sequel at a time to my queue. When it says PART 1 is shipping, then I'll add PART 2 atop my queue. When PART 2 is shipped, then I'll add PART 3 etc...

By the way, I don't know why, but lately Netflix has sped up again for me. I'm sure they'll be back to their old tricks soon, though.

But how is Blockbuster's selection for foreign films? What I love about Netflix is that they carry the large majority of R1 and Asian R0 DVD releases. There's only a handful of producers for which they don't carry everything released.

Really it doesn't bother me that 40 Year Old Virgin has been a "very long wait" for 3 months or whatever. Getting new releases right away isn't a big deal for me. Getting a large number of titles of the types of movies I like to watch is.

And yes George, I sacrifice watching movies I buy for the variety of stuff from Netflix. That's why I always have a huge backlog even though I've cut my buying way down and also probably have a couple hundred DVD's that I've only watched once. I suppose the silver lining in the Netflix thing is that, once the Olympics are over, I'll have more time to watch my own DVDs.

I haven't done a complete search there yet but they did carry VERY SMALL cult titles from Blue Underground, Something Weird, Anchor Bay and Synapse. They had several titles that aren't available at Netflix. Again, if you order a pizza in the next few weeks go ahead through Papa Johns online and get a free month worth of rentals. After the month is up then you can use the $9.95 first month coupon so that's two months rentals for $9.95.

I'm in the same boat. I've got 300+ movies on my queue right now. This has cut down on my spending over the past year. In the past I would spend $100-$200 a week on everything I was interested in but now I'm down to only buying titles from Warner. I also recorded over 1000 movies from TCM last year so I've got a huge backlog that I'll never catch up on.

Netflix is basically for blind views, Criterion's that I refuse to pay that much for or just items I'm curious about.

But if Blockbuster turns out to be anything like Netflix, they'll give you nice service in the beginning but then get sour.

OK, here's a strange story that I haven't heard anyone say yet.

Last Thursday Netflix shipped JUST LIKE HEAVEN and said it should arrive the following Wednesday. Well, it didn't show up and then Thursday I got an e-mail from them saying they had received the movie and they shipped another one out. I never even got the damn thing and yet they got it back and shipped another????

Anyhow, right now I'm really enjoying Blockbuster's service so after I check and see if they got most of the titles that Netflix offers I'll probably switch.

Mike,

Before I left Netflix I put the titles in my Blockbuster quene and never skipped a beat. It also makes sense to cancel a day before they bill your next month because you have already paid for the previous month anyway.

I put BUBBLE in my queue way ahead of the game and as soon as it was released it came up listed as "available."

Then, ALL OF A FRIGGIN' SUDDEN, a few days ago it began showing up as "long wait."

And now... AND NOW... ALL OF A FRIGGIN' SUDDEN, just this morning it is being listed in my queue as "VERY long wait"!

WHY?! WHY?! WHY?! I got in EARLY on this!
You mean, you put it in your queue, didn't move it to the top and they had the unmitigated gall to not leave a copy sitting in the warehouse just waiting to see if you would ever move it to the top of your queue? The bastards! They should be tarred and feathered. I would report them to your State Attorney General right this minute!!!

That happened to me once. What happened is the envelope got torn in transit and the part with your address was torn off. Then, the address showed up as the netFlix return address and it went back to them. Not really something you can blame Netflix for. the one time it happened to me, I actually got the cover sheet, but no envelope, and the disc went back to Netflix.

Re: NETFLIX frustration (transferred thread)

i am seriously thinking of canceling and going to blockbuster or something-everytime my queue reads "very long wait" for any movie remotely newly released. Infact I waited for over a month-close to a month and half for march of the pequins and 4o year old virgin- and I still never recieved them- I had to take them out of my queue and borrow them from a friend-now again-I had munich as my number one pick- it went from available-to short wait.. to very long wait. this happens all the time- i am paying for 3 movies at a time- but it never happens that way. I am a big movie watcher and don't feel I have to place older movies that I have already seen in my queue just so I can get three movies..just venting. (sorry I posted in another thread as well)

Tim,

Why not try Blockbuster with their two week free trail offer? I saw the Blockbuster offer on HTF's deal page dated 5/28/2006

Re: NETFLIX frustration (transferred thread)

I think I might- the wife is also sick of the games-it really does seem that the service has dropped off from the beginning. I truly feel like a third rate customer lately-and try getting a hold of customer service..geesh.. forget it.

Re: NETFLIX frustration (transferred thread)

In another Netflix thread long ago I mentioned the "rental" discs that they were sending out, notably from Warner and its affiliates (New Line, etc.). There was small discussions about what the differences were and mainly how the number of discs in a boxed set (or TV show) differed from the amount of discs in a retail set.

Anyway, I just finished watching 16 Blocks then read some reviews on-line. They all mention there were about 20 minutes of deleted scenes and (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't remember the rental disc having deleted scenes!

My memory has been failing me lately (see my After Hours thread titled "Please help me name this movie/show") but I remember asking myself, "Is this all?" regarding extra features. My wife and I watched the alternate ending separately and that's it.

If I am correct, then these rental discs are not giving us what the retail discs have and that's disappointing.

Re: NETFLIX frustration (transferred thread)

For my part, I haven't noticed any labeled rental discs that I've received that offered different content than the retail versions.

Re: NETFLIX frustration (transferred thread)

There's at least one: The Butterfly Effect, which I mentioned in my "Netflix Rental Discs" thread. I forgot about that one when I asked about 16 Blocks. Of course, Netflix and the participating studios could have stopped doing this.
