Surely, even in Scotland the sun shines occassionally.

For about two hours in July, I believe.

Seriously, for a lot of the year the Scottish highlands look very bleak and forbidding. Even during the summer the light has to be just right before they look less than minatory.

Regarding the detention scenes, while the emotions of that scene are intense and the idea of it is revolting, it's not particularly graphic visually in nature.

Huh? You don't consider Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the carving of words into flesh and writing with blood for ink
to be visually graphic? I certainly don't have a problem with it, though I see it being a bit much for younger audiences - particularly towards the end of the detentions: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
when the words start to become permanent and blood starts to flow freely down the back of Harry's hand (From Ch. 15: His hand was bleeding so severely that it was staining the scarf he had wrapped around it)

I imagine they will cut the above and only show the first detention (if they show any at all).

I am in the minority but I am not a big fan of the action sequence at the end of the book. It went on for far too long, and much like opening chapter of GoF, has obvious cinematic influences (she wrote it as if she was watching a movie). Which may be why it will work well on screen I guess.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the absolute best scenes in the book: Occlumency lessons.

And no love for Lovegood?

David: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
My guess is that they will use special effects with a red-ink fountain pen. The pen writes in red on the paper, which we assume is blood, and the mark on the hand is simply a pink irritation mark in the shape of the letters. It's not like bone is going to be exposed here. I personally consider the violence at the end of GOF to be far more graphic, with sliced off hands and the like. The detention scenes are certainly some of the most morally apalling scenes in the book, but I think most of that is what the viewer brings to it.

I don't remember Harris in Raiders; anyone want to remind me? Generally seems like a good choice. I was expecting more of a Sam Jackson build for Shacklebolt, but Harris has great eyes for the role. A lot of history there.
I wonder what Jarvis looks like. Hopefully very much like Radcliffe. Personally, I would have just had Dan play his father and convey the difference in character through make-up and acting.
It's especially interesting in that it's our first look at the film with Yates' fingerprints. Apparently there was a script read through last week. I expect more news will start coming soon.

Harris was the captain of the ship that Marion and Indy escape onto only to be overtaken by the german U-boat. He tries to protect/keep Marion from the Germans by pretending to want to sell her because of her excellent hair.

I kinda pictured Kingsley as younger and hipper, but Harris seems fine.

He was pretty cool in Layer Cake recently.

Good job on casting Luna - at least as far as looks.

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Commences Production for Warner Bros. Pictures

Quote:
Principal photography will commence February 6 at England’s Leavesden Studios on Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter novel series.

Directed by award winning British filmmaker David Yates (The Girl in the Café, Sex Traffic, State of Play), Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix is produced by Harry Potter film series producer David Heyman and David Barron, from a screenplay by Michael Goldenberg (Where the Wild Things Are, Peter Pan, Contact).

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reprise their roles as close-knit teen wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The production also welcomes back production designer Stuart Craig, costume designer Jany Temime, creature effects supervisor Nick Dudman, special effects supervisor John Richardson and visual effects supervisor Tim Burke. The director of photography is Slawomir Idziak (King Arthur, Black Hawk Down) and the editor is Mark Day (The Girl in the Café, State of Play).

Joining the stellar cast are Imelda Staunton (Nanny McPhee, Vera Drake) as Dolores Umbridge, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher; George Harris (The Interpreter, Black Hawk Down) as Kingsley Shacklebolt; Helen McCrory (Casanova, Enduring Love) as Bellatrix Lestrange; Natalia Tena (Mrs. Henderson Presents, About a Boy) as Nymphadora Tonks; Kathryn Hunter (All or Nothing, Orlando) as Mrs. Figg; and 14 year-old newcomer Evanna Lynch, who beat over 15,000 hopefuls at an open casting call to win the role of Luna Lovegood, a Ravenclaw student who becomes an important ally of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s.

I agree that she makes a great Luna. A bit shorter and rounder than I expected, but she has those crazy Luna eyes and glorious blonde hair. I also like the choice of McCrory as Bellatrix. Less sold on Natalia Tena as Tonks (too plain) and Kathryn Hunter as Figg (not ancient enough). Over all, it looks like a solid line-up. I'm surprised as many secondary characters made it as they did. It sounds like most of the book will make it in; hopefully it wouldn't be hyperspeed like Azkaban. It's going to be hard to match Goblet, but it's doable if they focus on characters over action.

thanks for the update Adam, I am already looking forward to see this on the big screen

Update #2: Warner Bros. has released the first official promo image for Order of the Phoenix, and it's of Luna:

MUCH better for me. Really softens her out and makes her more whimsical looking.
She has the makings of a good Luna. It's all in the personality anyway

Great casting so far for Luna, Umbridge, Shacklebolt, and Bellatrix Having a hard time finding pics of Natalia Tena, though, can anyone help?

Shouldn't she be holding that book upside down?

Imelda Staunton as Umbridge. It's amazing how many top-flight adult actors this series has been able to cast.

If job security is a main concern of someone looking for a job....Then I would advise getting hired as the Defense against the Dark Arts teacher. Every movie has had a new one.

That's been the running joke of the books, Todd.

I'm not entirely sold on the casting of Helen McCrory as Bellatrix Black Lestrange. I think she's a good actress (she was very entertaining in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking) but I haven't seen enough of her work to see if she can pull off the type of menacing required for the role.

Well then, she probably can't. You should write the director and casting people and let them know about your misgivings. I'm sure they'd love your input and will look for somebody else before they waste film on her. Make sure they bring the new actress by your house so you can audition her.

W-o-w. I'm hoping there was supposed to be a in there somewhere. If you're serious: worded a bit high-strung don't you think?

At this stage I'm not prepared to laud her casting, when all I have ever seen her do is play Dr. Watson's American love interest (her most high profile role to date). I would have preferred to see Elizabeth Hurley in the role, but what about my post didn't convey I wasn't keeping an open mind?

She looks suitably evil here:

I actually think she's one of the better casting choices they've made, sheerly by appearance.

What the hell is this about? IMDB isn't exactly the most reliable news source but it is still very troubling...

http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2006-02-10/

Actor Gary Oldman looks unlikely to reprise his role as Sirius Black in the next Harry Potter offering, after reports he has been mysteriously axed from the wizard franchise. Oldman, who has appeared in the last two movies adapted from JK Rowling's popular children's books, has yet to be signed for a third term - even though filming for Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix has already begun. The actor's manager, Douglas Urbanski, tells British newspaper The Sun, "You will be shocked to learn there are no plans for Gary to appear in the film. To say we are puzzled is an understatement at the very least! We are left with no choice but to pursue other employment for him." Vanessa Davis, spokeswoman for production company Warner Brothers, confirms no deal has been reached, but insists there is still time to resolve the confusion. She says, "With any film the priority is confirming the cast who will be on the set from the outset."

I know I read very recently elsewhere online that Gary Oldman was confirmed to appear in Phoenix by WB. I'll try to find it.

Edit: Here we go.
Hmmm, looks like imdb have picked that report of Oldman not being in the film from The Sun, a British tabloid. Im not yet convinced.
I never liked Oldman as Sirius and wouldn't be sorry to see him go.

Really? While his part was very small, I thought he and David Thewlis were the two best actors in that movie.
Id agree. One of the main things I am looking forward to is the return of Oldman and Thewlis who I thought were great in Azkaban and helped make it the best of the series so far IMO.
