Length limit on posts dooms my Guild thread

Thread Starter
Since 2002 I've been putting together a thread that kept track of Guild nominations and awards in preparation for the Academy Awards. Sure, a lot of people don't care, but for those who like to know what films are winning what awards and prognosticators, it's been helpful, I think. There are a lot of film festival awards, critics awards and things like the Golden Globes, but only the Guilds are comprised of people who generally are AMPAS members, people who can actually vote on the Academy Awards. Not all Guild members are AMPAS members, but nearly all AMPAS members are Guild members (those in specific crafts anyway). The Guild awards more than anything else signaled what AMPAS members were watching and liking.

This year is different because there's a length limit on posts now. I've never noticed that before. There are a specific number of Guild awards (10), and to take any out negates the whole reason for doing the thread in the first place. To split them up into two different threads negates the whole reason for doing the thread in the first place (not to mention being confusing, adding work to a fun hobby and clutters up the front page).

This is the only forum that allows both editing of your own posts (vital to what I do) and allows for instant archive retrieval (I have links to all my previous threads). I loved that the thread had a permanent home here at Home Theater Forum. I started to move the thread to Oscarwatch.com, but they don't keep archives, so a dead thread is gone forever.

I just had to post how sad and depressed I am. It was fun while it lasted.

For those who have never followed my threads, here are the previous ones:

What are you referring to? There isn't any type of time limit on editing of posts. What problems are you having?

No limits? Wow, when I posted my latest list, it cut off in the middle of the Visual Effects Society awards. It looked fine in Preview but was cut off when I actually tried to post it. Ok, I'm going to test. Here is my complete post. After I post I'll see if it's complete.

It all shows up, so it's not a coding problem. That "size" is just because the first (or last) part is gone. That whole section works if the beginning and end is there.

Have you considered splitting the post into two parts, one posted immediately after the other in the same thread?

Now I understand what you are saying. I also have this set to no limit but for some reason the software is limiting the size of text in a thread. I will look at the database and see if I can change it there.

In the mean time I would go with Michael's suggestion.

Thanks for the heads up about this.

Parker, thanks for looking into it. I can split them up as a temporary measure, but I hope you can find the problem. Splitting the post takes more work and clutters up the front page of the Movies section, not to mention makes referring to this year's thread next year more of a headache. It's just so nice to have everything in one, easily found thread.

I appreciate your time. (thanks too Michael)
Vickie:

I checked out MySQL and the limit is set by the database and nothing that I can see to change it. Maybe someone else can chime in here and let me know what I need to change in MySQL to increase the text size limit in the database.

As spacing is part of the whole count you might limit the amount of spacing between lines of text. For example between Best Special Effects Makeup - Feature Film and the next line that follows there is about 6 lines of space. I would cut this down to say 2 lines. That might help.

Also, as Michael suggested I would split them into 2 or 3 parts in the same thread. That would not only make sure that all the text is in there but that it is easier to scroll through for someone reading the post.

I think the reason that you are seeing them limited now for the first time is the list is getting longer each year. The limit is set by the database software and I am sure that you would find the same anywhere else you tried to up load the list to. I hope that you continue to keep them here.

Michael, I just re-read your post and see what you're saying now. I think I will. It would mean starting a new thread so I can have the first two posts, but that's ok. If the problem is fixed I can go back to putting it all into one post, and if it isn't they'll still be in the same thread.
Vickie:

Leave them in one thread up say post about half the list in one post and then start a new post in the same thread with the second or third part (as the list gets longer over the years).

Parker
Yes just posted that before I posted the above.

Let me know if you start up a new thread with the two posts
and I will delete the other or redirect people from your first thread to the new one.

Parker and Michael, I've just started a new thread, so the old one can be deleted or closed. The new thread has a * next to the title. I've taken the first 4 posts in the new thread which should be more than enough room, and everything's still in one thread.

The reason why there's blank spaces is that that's where nominees will go when they come in, so cutting the spacing won't ultimately change the length of the post.

Parker, thank you again for taking the time to look into the matter. I do appreciate it and feel honored. Thank you for HTF. Even though I don't participate as much as I used to, I feel a deep fondness and regard for this place. Even if I go away for a while I still feel like this is "home." :b

This also happened to my Warner Brother's 2-Disc Special Edition Series thread, and unfortunately I didn't catch it until it was too late, and so a large chunk of the post including the end of Part II b) and all of Part III and Part IV, as well as some nice information from George Feltenstein on this series.

This is also, why I have not updated the list since September, as it would mean having to wipe out even more of the list due to the size limit.

If there is some way, like from an older back-up (prior to September of 2005), that you could send me of the post, that would be fantastic. Although due to the text limit, I wouldn't be able to add it into the original post, I could include a link to a new post where the list would continue.

Please let me know if this is at all possible.

Thanks!

Nils:

Going back and getting a single post from the database would be difficult if not impossible to do with any degree of success.

The limit on a field in a MySQL database using the text type was news to me. I thought that you were able to use just about any size thread.
