Movies where you wanted more at the ending...(spoilers)..

Have you ever watched a movie and at the end you wanted some more story/explaination? My wife & I just watched Mr & Mrs.Smith and felt like the movie ended weird...like me missed something.

But, the movie I really wished had more at the ending was "School Ties". At the end it comes out that Brendan Frasiers character didn't cheat. I wanted more than his little conversation with Matt Damon and him walking away. I wanted to see how the other kids react when they all find out. Not that it would change the ones who hate him. Just felt I wanted some more story.

Memento immediately comes to my mind.

I did not realize the pun in this statement until later....

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (joke)

I would have to go with "Eyes Wide Shut". It was all leading up to something great and then... BAM... over.

There is one answer to this question that stands head and shoulders above all others:

Blow Up

Even though it's part of my favorite series of all time, I always wished the ending of Return of the Jedi were a little stronger. The SE has gone a long way in improving it; I just wish the final shot was a bit more thoughtful or powerful. As it is, it just seems like everyone is gathering for a high school group shot (as someone on this forum put it once before, I think). It wouldn't be bad if the final shot were changed to the 3 Jedi spirits, in my opinion.

Just about every Hammer horror movie. Plop! the body hits the ground and/or poof! the house goes up in flames, and the credits immediately roll. Jeez, even only a quick line from a surviving good guy about what has transpired over the previous hour and a half would give a little more sense of closure, rather than having the curtain drop while you are still processing what just happened.

Brett, I agree with you regarding ROTJ. In a similar note. I would have liked a little more reaction from Leia about Luke being her brother and more importantly being Vader being Daddy.

Matrix: Revolutions. Just a little more time on the implications of everything that happened, since they went so against what we were expecting.

Man On Fire

I realize the film is 2 and half hours long, but the final few minutes happen too fast. At this point you are so drawn into the film, that you want it to go on for another 20 minutes or so.

I was expecting a whole lot more to happen by the end of Crash (2005).

Man, the ending of that film left me sad for Washingtons character. I haven't been able to watch the movie since, and I LOVED the rest of the movie.

As for more, I'd like to see more Matrix and I'm sure Star Wars movies could come out every 3 years.

Castaway - I really wanted to see how Hanks character responded to coming back from being isolated for years. Just being around people, watching TV again, driving a car, hell even using a toilet again.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (no joke)

I wanted to see the summations for the Members of the Fellowship and would have loved to see Old Sam go to the Grey Havens.

When I first saw Se7en I was disappointed with the end. I didn't necessarily want it to be gorier than the preceding crimes, but there was something missing.

The Big Country. Great movie but ends waaaay abruptly.

I forgot another more recent movie...Broken Flowers. I am sorry. Maybe, I am just not into the art movies. But, myself, wife, friends and from what I heard other people murmering...."Did we miss something?". I thought maybe they lost a reel to the film.

Or it could be that the director Jarmush was too busy doing reshoots on the nude scene with that girl that he forgot to write the ending.

Todd,

These movies like Broken Flowers are to a certain extent ink-blot tests onto which the viewer projects his or her own meaning. That said, I don't think it could have ended any way other than it did and made any sense at all.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Bill Murray's character wasn't going to suddenly find meaning in his life just because he made contact with the son he never knew he had. Plus, I think the whole thing was a setup by Julie Delpy's character anyway.

So you did want a UFO to come out of Spacey's head?!

Limbo. Of course, that was the point of the film. But still, I wanted more . . .

Castaway is a good call. Although a very lengthy film, I too would have liked a little more of "life after the island"

A few more that come to mind are "The 13th Warrior", and "Gangs of New York". Thought both of the final fights were done way too fast. I wanted more.

Regarding ROTJ, one member had a brilliant idea for the final shot, it had Luke walking up the steps and entering the long abandoned Jedi Temple to re-establish the Jedi order with the ghosts of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda looking on proudly. It's just so poetic, the last time we saw a Skywalker walk up those steps was to bring death to the Jedi, and now it is to replenish life for the Jedi.

Endings to action films always leave me wanting more, I always find myself wondering "Well, what happens to the hero now? Does he go to the hospital, go home, go to the police station for extensive questionng or what?"

Take Die Hard for example, McClane was most likely sued by the Nakatomi Corporation for causing so much damage to their building when he dropped that bomb down the shaft, they couldn't blame the destruction of the roof on him, but that shaft bit was all his fault LOL.

Now, I realize that they would never show that in the film, but it's still fun to imagine it.

I like that. But, since Mark Hamill is 25 years older. How about a shot of him filmed now...showing Luke(25 years older) in a restored Jedi Temple.

40 Year Old Virgin - no movie, even comedic, should end in a musical number!

DANCES WITH WOLVES, only a little bit.

I'm just slightly curious what actually happened to him after he rode off, on a futile effort to make the Native American cause known. Some text at the end, no new scenes, would have sufficed.
I know the 13th Warrior had reshoots done to it because Michael Crichton didn't like the first version that was delivered.

Gangs Of New York was cut down from 4 hours.

MichaelBA, did you ever see the extended cut of Dances With Wolves (it's 4 hours and sometimes airs on Encore and is on DVD)? It didn't add anything to the ending though. The movie is based on a novel and the sequel novel (The Holy Road) came out in 2002. I was disappointed by the book, but it shows what happens after the end of the movie. You might see Holy Road made into a movie eventually, but Kevin Costner wants nothing to do with it.

Broken Flowers!
Regarding more Star Wars changes. Noooooooo!

Thanks much for the info on HOLY ROAD, David. Never knew there was a sequel to the original book. [I've seen the extended DWW -- I'm still deciding which version I prefer.]

David, regarding Holy Road. Can you give a synopsis of what happens? In spoilers of course. Thanks!

I too would love to have seen the "scouring of the shire" where Merry and Pippin kick some human and hobbit butt. When I first read LOTR in high school, I though everything after the defeat of Sauron was boring and I couldn't understand why Tolkien included another 150 pages or so. The next time I read it, quite a few years later, these end chapters became my favorite part, especially the scouring. Of course, Jackson was criticized for what little he did include, but I would have sat there for another hour watching the screen fade in and out, no problem.

On another note, I thought "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" ended a little more abruptly than I would have liked. Similar to "Limbo".
