Our Top 10 Lists of 2005 - "Time to throw down!" - Page 4

With Nothing to do at work today I started compiling the top tens into a spread sheet. number 1s got ten points, number 10s got 1 point. Ties got an average of the two rankings they should be (eg tied number 1 is 9.5 pts, four tied number three is 6.5 pts each). I used only complete top tens with the exception of Eric Peterson who is abstaining from 'awarding' a number one film.

Thirteen people still have placeholders

Anyway, Batman Begins is so far in front it's absolutely untouchable and was mentioned in 34 of 44 possible lists.

Interestingly, Batman Begins only had 3 number one votes, Munich had 7 and Star Wars had 6, King Kong has only 1, and Brokeback Mountain has 3. Harry Potter has none, New World has 4 (and the fewest total votes of the top ten), Sin City has 1, Cinderella Man has 2 and Crash has none.

The 2005 HTF top ten as of 1/30/2006:
  1. Batman Begins - 224.5
  2. Munich - 166
  3. Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith - 131.5
  4. King Kong - 122
  5. Brokeback Mountain - 98
  6. New World - 85.5
  7. Sin City - 81
  8. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 76
  9. Cinderella Man - 73
  10. Crash - 72

    The Top Fifty:
  11. Constant Gardener
  12. Syriana
  13. Serenity
  14. History of Violence
  15. Capote
  16. Walk the Line
  17. Grizzly Man
  18. Chronicles of Narnia
  19. Good Night, and Good Luck
  20. War of the Worlds

  21. Old Boy
  22. Pride and Prejudice
  23. 40 Year Old Virgin
  24. Saraband
  25. Junebug

  39. Cache
  40. Wedding Crashers
  41. Kingdom of Heaven

  45. North Country
  46. Tropical Malady

Great work, Adam! I've added a link to your post at the beginning of the thread.

I'm not shitting ya, I was getting ready to post "hey, you should break those down into some average rank when listed and other types of stats.

Nice work sucka, there's always some chump willing to bite the bullet and do the work. Where's Dana and the scripts he had written?
Oh, I'm still around, lurking ...

Truthfully I'm so deep into my writing that I've taken very little time to come up above the surface and breathe. Even my DVD buying has suffered (oh, the shame! ).

Actually this list has been in my mind the past few days - I should have a good amount of time this weekend, so I'll take a stab at it, see how much effort it'd take.

Gonna have to put in some overtime myself on the filmwatching - I think I've seen ZERO of the BP noms this year - inexcusable!
Good work Adam, I can see I'm at my usual level of agreement with the forum.

How far is Grizzly Man from the top 10?

Updated my list on page 2. The Constant Gardener replaces Episode III as my #10 film of the year.
My list is updated as well. Caché takes over the #2 slot knocking Look At Me out of my top 10.

I'm also up to 90 seen & still have around 15 at the top of my Netflix list with 5 more to be added in the next 2 weeks. Match Point is the only remaining '05 movie I'm likely to still see at a theater.
Changed my number ten from Serenity to NORTH COUNTRY.
I started the tabulations today - I'm only going to do the Top 30 of the Top 10 direct stats, I'm not doing the weighted averages (even though the chart will have them they'll be meaningless) - the reason is that it takes a HUGE amount of time to compare each member posting in this thread with the films entered in the 2005 Film List thread, and entering those in my database. MUCH easier to just enter everybody's top 10 and produce the direct result initially, and if I have time, go back and enter the remaining films.

Anyway, all should be good before Oscars. Just an FYI, based on the first 10 posts in this thread, it comes out as: Batman Begins, Munich, King Kong, Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Star Wars Episode III, Sin City, Serenity, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Junebug.

I have this sneaking suspicion that, compared to previous years, most folk posting in here did not see more than 20 or so films in 2005, which can skew the results toward more action-centric or more mainstream films.

I'm also curious to see how Crash compares to Brokeback Mountain here, too.

[Update - Didn't notice Adam's quick stats posted earlier - his totals should match mine or fairly close to it when done; looks like Brokeback and Crash are still in relatively close contention.]
Dana, I've been similar to you with HTF, DVD buying and movie going in general. I've had to make a real effort at times to stick with it.

But then when I do I always enjoy it so much that I wonder what the problem was. Sometimes you just get busy and get in a different rhythm. Still love films and the HTF, even finally got my projector mounted from the ceiling properly (had used a bookshelf to hold it up).

Anyway, I put my count directly in my top 10 list now if that helps.

I just altered my list for Cinderella Man going into my top 10 at #2 and Hustle and Flow and Murderball getting into my 11-20 range. I have Constant Gardner in the house on DVD ready to go next, and I hope to catch Transamerica at the theater this week.

Good luck on the data Dana (Roger Roger).
My 2005 count is currently 30, an all time low as well I think.

Currently on deck, I am doing a Look at Me and 5x2 back to back tonight, Saraband is for tomorrow.

Then I've got at least the following to watch before I post a list:
Sin City, Grizzly Man, Transamerica, Junebug, You and Me and Everyone You Know plus a few others.

It's been a slow year, but a busy, enjoyeable catch up season. That said, I have yet to see that one movie (or more) every year that stands head and shoulder above the rest, that flat out kocks me off my ass, reaches me in a place where few have. Like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Before Sunset and Sideways for last year, ROTK and Whale Rider for 2004 or TTT, 25th hour and The Pianist for 2003.

I have a lot of 3 and 3.5 (out of 4), but not a single 4 star for 2005.

It's been a while since I posted... I've been traveling for the last four months (I'm presently in India) and haven't gotten much of a chance to catch up on my films.

Here's my list... the order may change, and I still haven't seen a lot of important releases (Syriana, Match Point, Transamerica, The New World, etc.).

Is anyone else having problems editing/updating their posts?
Yes. Database Error.

EDIT: Actually sorry, I jumped the gun a bit, I am having that issue with the 2005 Film List.

I don't keep a list in this tread.

I'd really like to update my list, especially as I saw "Yes" last night. Since I'm apparently the only one in the world who loved it, I wanted to make sure to give it the honor that only I think it richly deserves!

Added The Best of Youth into my #4 slot which bumps The Squid & the Whale out of my top 10. I considered replacing Hustle & Flow at #10 with The White Diamond, but left it alone for now.

I'm at 110 seen.
