Here Come the Brides

This one is a surprise, although it really shouldn't be. One of those shows that was very popular, at least for a short time. There will be a lot of 40+ year old women buying this who were in love with Bobby Sherman way back when. I'd be curious if this actually comes out if Sony will restore the original first season opening with the vocal version of the theme song, sung by The New Establishment. In syndication, as with most other Screen Gems shows, they stuck the later season open titles on every episode. That one had an instumental open.

I have to admit I am one of those women but I watched it in syndication and I am 44 so no telling how old the women are who watched it in first run. Anyway just the hint that it might be coming out is enough to make my day, it is one of those shows that I never thought would come out but it seems to have more fans than I realized.

You've probably seen this already, but TV Shows on DVD just put up cover art and details:

I am SO there on the day it's released.

A little disappointing that there are no extras. Many of the younger cast members are still around -- I'd love to hear a Bobby Sherman/Bridget Hanley commentary on an episode or two.

Is anyone else bothered by the cover art? Specifically that Bobby Sherman's image seems to have been Photoshopped in? He seems to be wearing clothing that's contemporary to the late 60's/early 70's, not in period costume as the rest of the cast is. Just looks weird to me.

They BETTER issue it with the proper theme song lyrics! That was a great song! "Look out everyone--Here Come the Brides!!"

I certainly saw that post and it made my day again. I guess if Sony refuses to put out the second season of SWAT I can forgive them since they are finally putting this out on dvd. So now is just the countdown to the day it is released. One of the benefits of being older, time goes fast.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I noticed that shirt on Bobby Sherman isn't right and the one on David Soul doesn't look right either but I will overlook these things to get the dvds that are inside.

Too bad about the extras, you would think they would have something since those actors are still around.

Not sure about David Soul's shirt -- I think I've seen him wear similar shirts in other photos from the show. Here's one in red:

But Bobby's outfit definitely isn't right (hip-hugger jeans in 1850's Seattle???), and the image has definitely been Photoshopped in from another source. Check the light source on the other actors -- up and to the left. On Bobby alone, the light is coming from up and right. Anybody got a link to the original of either part of this composite?

Can't tell for sure without seeing a higher-res version of this, but it also looks like the pic of the other actors may be from a real color photo, where Bobby looks like colorized black-and-white. I could be wrong, but it just looks odd to me.

Like you said, though, I'll be extremely happy to get the set despite some minor quibbles. I wasn't expecting to see this so soon, so that makes me a happy camper.

And glad they got rid of Robert Brown's "antlers" from the last version of the cover!!! That did look a little goofy! This type treatment is much cleaner-looking.

There is new box art posted on tvshowsondvd.com but it looks like they only changed the "Brides" logo. Another thing, the dvd box and press release doesn't mention whether these are the original uncut versions or the later syndicated cuts. Somehow I lean toward the former, (thank God). It also doesn't mention anything about the theme music, but it does mention Bobby Sherman's cover of that song.

Which wasn't even a single release, let alone a Top 10 hit as they claim in their release. The only charted version of the song was by . . . . PERRY COMO! Believe it or not. The version by The New Establishment, the group that sang it for the show, was rercorded and was the B-side of their second single, which did not chart. The Bobby Sherman version was an album track.

As for what form the show will be in, well, there are no pre-cut videotapes. The last time the show was distributed was in the 80's when it might have still been sent out on 16mm film. So it will have to be mastered from the original elements. So far other series from Columbia which had the original opens replaced (The Monkees, Partridge Family and The Flintstones) all had them re-inserted for DVD release.

Well, unfortunately, Columbia didn't do that on Bewitched. Much as I hoped the original theme song versions and animation would be restored, they still used the later (4th Season) syndication opening on the first 2 seasons so far. I was hoping they'd at least use the original syndication openings with the different theme song version each season (but without the sponsor bits that appeared on the original network broadcasts), but no. Oh well.

Anxious to see HCTB again. I wonder how it holds up.

I've a feeling that the song will be used. After all, the Sony publicity release starts with the lyrics from "Seattle" from Season 1 to introduce the title: "Look out everyone- Here Come The Brides!". I much prefer the first season opening credits with the vocal theme as to the second season with the instrumental theme and the stereopticon shown onscreen. It is surprising with the cult interest in the show that the stars haven't been asked to participate in extras. This show was a cultural touchstone to a lot of people of a certain age back in '69, like Dark Shadows and The Mod Squad.

The only thing I remember about this late 1960s comedy-western series from my having discovered it on CBN Cable in early 1980s reruns is the late Joan Blondell (who was usually seen as a guest star in other shows during that decade) in a regular supporting role.

I don't recall any lyrics, but that's probably because I tuned into a 2nd season show with the instrumental version. And the hip musical theme at the beginning was the only thing cool about the entire show! The rest is totally avoidable. I couldn't sit through one episode it was so awful.

My 19 year-old roommate knows about the 1950s musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (which he's regretted ever since, as his father made him watch it), but I'll bet anything he's never seen "Here Come the Brides".

Bridget Hanley I know from her co-starring with Barbara Eden in another 2 season show -- the 1980s sitcom "Harper Valley, PTA".

I have to disagree. During the CBN run of the series, they switched from using 16mm prints to pre-cut, remastered tapes. At the same time KTLA started running the series (1991) and were also using the remastered 44-minute versions.

The press release says that the set runs 1345 minutes so each of the 26 episodes would average out to be aprox 51 minutes.
That sounds about right.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=5255

The audio and video on the episodes are also digitally mastered.(I wish it would say RE-mastered but hey,you can't have everything)
Sounds like a nice release!

I haven't seen this series since it originally aired so I'm going to pick up this set as I loved Susan Tolsky as "Biddie". I remember seeing her in "Love American Style" after HCTB ended. She has a voice that isn't easily forgotten.

I agree that it's a shame that there's no interviews or commentaries from any of the actors. Most of the younger cast members are still around so hopefully the fans will get something from them on the second (and final) season release.
