APOCALYPTO --- Mel Gibson's Latest

I couldn't find an existing thread for this summer release, but Entertainment Tonight gave a glimpse of the upcoming teaser.

save target as...

Quote:
Mel: “What I’m doing is making an action-adventure film of mythic proportions. It's a story about a man and his woman, his child and his father, his community. The man is put in an incredibly heightened, stressful situation...has to overcome tremendous obstacles. So it’s a universal story in that respect....I’m hoping by focusing on this civilization we can analyze ourselves....kind of an anthropological journey.”

From Wikipedia...

Quote:
Scheduled for release in the summer of 2006, the film is set 600 years ago in Central America, before the Spanish conquest, in the midst of the mysterious decline of the Mayan civilization. Dialogue will be spoken in the obscure Mayan dialect of Yucatec, in the same way Gibson used Aramaic and Latin for his religious blockbuster The Passion of the Christ. It will feature a cast of unknown actors culled from Mexico City, the Yucatan and even some American Indians from the United States. The female lead is a young woman from Veracruz, Mexico.

Gibson will bankroll “Apocalypto” himself (Disney will distribute.) It began shooting in November and was shot almost entirely in the jungle of Mexico’s Veracruz state.

Interesting to note that this will be the second film to dabble in Mayan culture next year (Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain being the other).

I've respected all three of Gibson's films, so I'll go to the theater for this one.

Got to admire a man paying for his own films. GL does it, and Gibson does it. That's worth supporting, and the man can make films.

I'm with you on this one, Chuck. Gibson is a damn fine filmmaker. It's nice to see an artist who isn't afraid to take risks, especially with his own cash.

Sounds wildly ambitious which is always exciting with a passionate and capablie filmmaker.

My enthusiasm aside, the title sounds like a Tenacious D song. Which isn't a bad thing.

Maybe the film will open with a caption that reads, "This is the greatest and best movie in the world..."

Naw it'd probably read: "This is just a tribute..."

Anyway looks good, I like Mel, I respect him and think he's a great film maker. Wish Caleb Deschanel was the Cinematographer for this movie, but I can't wait to see it, though it's of a different caliber than Passion.

This is infinitely more interesting to me than the upcoming Malick poki drivel.

Nice to see someone actually doing something with guts, class, and not immediately condescending and stupid.

I will be first in line for this.

If I could buy my ticket now, I would.

Looks great! I can't wait!

I'm intrigued.

Peace,

Dynamite. If anybody has balls, it's Mel Gibson. I will see this opening day.

Looks absolutely...something. I can't even think of a word to describe how I reacted to the trailer - I honestly don't know WHAT to think.

Really interested in this when it comes out...

I'd check out the fast montage in the teaser near the end frame-by-frame. There's something hilarious in it.

Gotta love Mel.

Or is that Saddam

I like Mel and his films, but this guy has Howard Hughes written all over him.

For those wondering, Mel's cameo is right near the 1:46 mark.

Looking forward to this. Mel's proven he can do big, epic stories. And kudos to him for footing the bill and protecting his artistic integrity.

Regarding the use of the original languages: I'm fine with it, but in this case (as opposed to with Passion), I'd like to have subtitles. Mayan culture and history is so foreign to the majority of the world that I think having subs will help.

Looks very good. Most likely one I will trek to the theater for. I have enjoyed all of Mel's films and this one looks to be just as enjoyable.

Directorially, this looks a bit different from his other works. First of all, it's in 1.85:1 (judging from the compositions...or is the trailer just cropped?) and there doesn't seem to be any slow motion, although this is only a teaser which seems to really only show 2-3 scenes or so from the film. I wonder if Gibson cut this trailer himself.

Looks eerie and gorgeous, will definitely check it out.

And that cameo... Gotta love Mel

You see, it's really a science fiction film! Mel's the white guy from the prophecy which is why the Mayans or whatever didn't just kill the bastard right off the boat!

Braveheart is a fine film and I found myself very moved and intrigued by Passion of the Christ despite my totally non-religious nature. I'll sure see this if to do nothing more than support a great filmmaker who sure has some big brass ones.

Mel’s first directorial effort was filmed flat.

I hope this is in Panavision. The use of 2.35:1 on Braveheart and The Passion was just amazing.

Not to mention that it's PANAVISION instead of Super-35...

I have a feeling that this trailer is somehow deceptive of the nature of the film. I'm not really sure what to think.

The plot of every movie Mel has ever made or been in!

I feel the same way - while the teaser is cut like an action film, I have a feeling it will be a lot more obscure and slower then what the teaser indicates.

The teaser was very interesting. I definitely plan on checking this out. When is the release date?

And who was the first to find the Mel frame? Even knowing it was there I wasn't really able to pick it out until I went frame by frame.
